Normally I don't make videos this long, but since I have been getting some requests for longer videos, I decided to try something a little different with this video and try something a little more like a documentary of reality type of show.

Nepal was truly an amazing country, and part of the reason I visited was to do a trek in the Himalayas, a dream of mine. So after spending some time in Kathmandu, we took a bus to Pokhara in order to check out the situation and arrange our Ghorepani Poon Hill trek in the Annapurna mountain range, located just an hour drive from the city of Pokhara.

We started things off by first taking a taxi from Pokhara to Nayapul which cost 1500 Nepali Rupees. This is a popular starting point for the hike and there were several other groups also beginning. Our first day we trekked from the town of Nayapul to the town of Tikhedunga. For most of day one, we walked along a gravel road, passing villagers, homes, and farms along the way. We took a break to eat lunch, and I ate something known as dal bhat, which is rice with mixed vegetables and dal soup. As we continued to hike, the views became better and better, but nothing compared to what we'd see in the following days. We finally arrived to Tikhedunga, and our small guest house was located at the top of a small hill, next to a stream. It was a beautiful quiet location and the atmosphere was amazing, as was the fresh air. For dinner that night I enjoyed a plate of rice accompanied by a can of fish which I had brought and a plate of fried noodles.

On day two of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek I woke up early and ate breakfast. In order to save money, I had brought some bags of muesli, which is very cheap to buy in Pokhara or Kathmandu. I also purchased a cup of chai from the guest house. After a lovely breakfast we continued hiking the trail en-route today to Ghorepani, the town at the peak of our trek. The trail was gorgeous and we climbed up and up and up, taking frequent little breaks to drink water and to chow down on power snacks like peanuts and some chocolate. For lunch we took a break at a local restaurant where I ordered dal bhat along with some delicious buffali sukuti, dried meat. It was pretty delicious and some needed protein. The views were absolutely marvelous, and the highlight of the day was catching the first glimpse of the ice covered Himalayan peaks of Nepal! On day two of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, we arrived to Ghorepani extremely tired, hungry, and cold. We checked in to our guest house, showered, put on our warm down jackets which we had rented, and then enjoyed sipping on hot cups of tea by the fire. It began to hail and snow, but we could still see the unbelievable views of the Annapurna mountains. We decided to sleep quite early as the next day we were going to wake up early in the morning to climb to the top of Poon Hill for the sunrise view of the Himalayas.

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek in Nepal | A Complete Trekking Details

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek in Nepal: Starting the trek from Nayapool, the first night is spent at Tikhedunga. The next day you climb up 1,400m to the beautifully situated village of Ghorepani and enjoy the beautiful viewpoint sunrise at the well know Poon Hill on day 3. This highly praised and spectacular trekking route is ideal if you have a limited amount of time in Nepal. Trekking in this region of the breathtaking Annapurnas, is the perfect way to get up close and into the heart of one of nature’s wonders. This trek has deservedly described as one of the best in the World since it was fist opened to foreigners in 1977. It is particularly exquisite in the Spring when the mountainsides are awash in a sea of rhododendron blossoms. The abundance of traditional culture and the hospitality of the local people can definitely help to ease a tired mind or soothe aching legs at the end of each day of discovery. This short but challenging trek is the perfect way to enjoy a unique Himalayan of adventure.

I wanted to find a short 4-5 day hike starting from Pokhara, Nepal that had comfortable tea houses to sleep in each night and a nice view of the Himalayan mountains up top. Read the entire blog post at


After getting altitude sickness and severely cold on my Annapurna Circuit attempt, I was glad to see that the maximum altitude for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek was only 3,210m which is 10,531ft. Also even though the viewpoint at Poon Hill gets close to freezing at 2C/36F, at least it wouldn't get down to -20C like Thorlong Pass on the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp hikes. I figured the Poon Hill trek would be much easier, allow me to go alone without a porter or guide, and would be an easy start and finish in Pokhara. It turns out that I would be mostly right, but wanted to share this blog post to help guide others who are thinking about doing the same short trek in Nepal.



In this post I'll share the itenary of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, my packing list, where I stayed, and tips about getting to and from Pokhara via bus or taxi as well as a breakdown of what each day was like. I also filmed a 15 minute video that shows bits from each day so you can see how the trek feels, sounds and looks before you go, accompanied by a 1 hour podcast episode recorded live on the trek with clips from people I met along the way! This was a fun hike, that is really popular to do because it's easy to navigate, while still being physically challenging and offering some amazing views. My first video post of 2019 is of my most meaningful trip in 2018.

This is a documentation of my experience hiking the famous Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek in the Annapurna Region. For people with a time constrain, this is a good alternative to the Annapurna Circuit or base camp trek. I enjoyed myself tremendously and will always hold close to my heart the events that transpired.

3 reasons why this trip means so much to me.

1) It has always been in my bucket list to hike in the Himalayas.
2) It is the first trip my girlfriend and I took together.
3) Nepal was a defining moment in our relationship.

Nepal is a small country with wide ranging climatic conditions, so a decision about the best time to visit should be based on the regions you plan to tour and the kind of weather you enjoy. Best time to visit poon hill on March and April. This time skies are usually cloudless with crystal clear views because humidity is relatively low. You can enjoy rhododendrons in full boom so spring definitely in the air at that time.
Stay at Dhampus for the sunrise and sunset views. After that stay in Ghandruk. Ghandhuk is a model village in Nepal with majority gurung families living there and promoting rural tourism with local resources that are available locally. Ghandruk village is stopover place to travel Annapurna range and to trek Ghandruk is a moderate trek that necessitates few uphill and downhill walking through the banks of river and fields of paddy.
Ghorepani is a village in Myagdi District in the Dhaulagiri Zone of northern-central Nepal. It lies 17 kilometres from the district capital of Beni at an elevation of approximately 2874 m (9429 ft). The place used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghora in Nepali) thus leading to the nomenclature Ghorepani. Ghorepani can be reached in about 8 – 10 hours starting from Tatopani. This trail passes through the villages of Shikha, Dana and Chitre.

We grossly underestimated both the difficulty and the beauty of this short trek. I got a taste of the indescribable wonder of the Annapurna mountain range and was hooked. Fires in cosy teahouses, waking up to crisp Himalayan views and of course, the euphoria of reaching 'the top' are all cherished moments.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular, relatively short and easy trek that meander through the scenic atmosphere of Annapurna region.

Poon Hill trek starts from Nayapul after one and half hour drive from Pokhara. However you can take a 4WD all the way upto Ulleri shortening the trek. This trek passes beautiful villages of Ulleri and Ghorepani, the viewpoint on Poonhill (3210m) offers the best view of mountains and sunrise.
