The Poonjar Palace is a beautiful heritage site located at the Meenachil Taluk in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Stands as a testimony to the glorious regal magnificence of a bygone era, this palace is a wonderful collection of so many antiques and different furniture types. Visitors love to enjoy the beautiful chandeliers, a palanquin, jewel boxes, a unique droni (treatment bed) for Ayurvedic massages which is carved out of a single wooden piece, different types of lamps, palm leaf engravings, grain measures, sculptures of Nataraja (the dancing Shiva) and many weapons and statues at this place. The palace also houses a special conch which is taken out for ritualistic purposes once in a year. This charming heritage site is surrounded by massive walls.
There is a temple near the palace which is truly a replica of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The sculptures on the walls of this temple narrate the stories from the Puranas. The large Chuttuvilakku (row of lamps) near the temple also fascinates visitors. It is a rare rock-cut lamp carved out on the stone walls of the nearby Sastha Temple. Poonjar Palace is almost 30 kilometers away from Kottayam railway station. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport which is around 76 kilometers away from Kottayam Town.

The palaces exhibit wide variety of architectural patterns. It is quite impressive that it is the thoughts of great craftsmen and architects that are expressed in stones. Pazhassi Raja (3 January 1753-30 November 1805) was born in the Padinjare Kovilakam (Western Branch) of Purannattu Swarupam,Peralam Village, the royal clan of the kingdom of Kottayam in North Malabar not Kottayam District in south Kerala. This branch was located at Pazhassi which lay south west of Mattannur. Kerala Varma got the name Pazhassi Raja as he was a native of Pazhassi. Pazhassi Padinjare Kovilakom, where legendary freedom fighter Veera Kerala Pazhassi Raja’s descendants lived, may turn into a heap of mud and wood soon with the state government failing to take it over as promised. The century-old palace, built in 1903 by the royal family, was a treasure trove of many valuable articles for archaeologists. The present owners decided to demolish it due to dilapidation.
During the previous dispensation, a meeting of ministers, Mattannur Municipality and Pazhassi Raja Trust decided to purchase the property to preserve, but nothing materialised.

MONROE LIGHT HOUSE, KOTTAYAM...
