Best Universities | 96- KU Leuven (Catholic University of Louvain)
Founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V, the Catholic University of Louvain is the oldest Catholic university in the world. It is also the oldest university in the Low Countries. The quintessential humanist, Desiderius Erasmus, lectured at this school.
In 1968, this ancient university split into two parts: a Dutch-speaking (KU Leuven) and a French-speaking part (Université Catholique de Louvain). The French-speaking school subsequently relocated to the suburb of Louvain-la-Neuve.
KU Leuven is Belgium’s largest university, both in terms of students and research funding/expenditures. It attracts 41,000 students, 8,000 of whom are international. Also, 6,500 researchers from 120 countries work here. Combined, these groups represent 140 nationalities.
KU Leuven is a charter member of the league of European Research Universities. Its annual research expenditure is €418 million and the overall endowment is €950 million.
Despite the fact that its library burned down in both world wars, the school now has 30 auxiliary libraries with 4.3 million volumes. The school partners with a teaching hospital and has produced multiple Nobel Prize Laureates.

STORYLINE
Roman Catholics around the world prayed for the recovery of Pope John Paul II on Wednesday, who remains in hospital in Rome.
Special masses were held for the ailing pope in churches and cathedrals in his native Poland, and in Russia, the Middle East, Kenya and the US.
In France people lit candles in Paris' Notre Dame cathedral - France is a secular country and there was no officially organised mass.
The pontiff's hospitalisation dominated front pages and news broadcasts on Wednesday.
Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels said that while everyone was preoccupied by the pope's state of health, he felt the situation was not very dangerous at the moment.
Italy's foreign minister praised the pope, saying he was respected around the world by Catholics and non-Catholics for setting great store by the values associated with the dignity of man.

Doing Justice to Justification: Historical Reflections on a Decisive Controversy of the Reformation Era
Prof. Dr. Andreas Beck (Evangelical Theological Faculty Leuven)
Catholic university investigates prof over pro-life lecture
June 1, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – The young professor facing termination from his job at Belgium's Catholic University of Louvain for showing his students pro-life arguments says he doesn't fear for his future because Our Lord is eternally victorious.
Stéphane Mercier, who is currently under investigation by the Belgian university, spoke to LifeSiteNews at the 2017 Rome Life Forum. He revealed that his inspiration for the lecture that caused so much backlash was articles he read on LifeSiteNews.
It’s thanks to LifeSiteNews that I felt somewhat compelled to say a few things to my students about the truth about abortion, he said. Your work has determined me in the best of ways.
He says he wondered what would I say on the day of judgment, when the Lord will ask me, 'what have you done with your teaching activity?'
I’ve done quite a few interesting things in my opinion, but nothing that really matters from an existential point of view, Mercier explained. And so, I thought that I should speak about human dignity.

11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cardinal Godfried Danneels:
After the funeral we will simply be to make a check up with the other cardinals what is the state of the church, what do we need, what are the needs of the church in the next future because after this pope there is another one that has to come. I do not think much about who he is, but what he is.
12. Media with cardinal
13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cardinal Godfried Danneels:
Well, I think it is a pope that will continue what John Paul II has done, nothing is finished in all what he did, but also I think to think about what are the needs for the future of the church. I think there are some needs in the church for example evangelisation, the secularisation in Europe, the poverty in America Latina (Latin America).

15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cardinal Godfried Danneels:
That is up to heaven what God is thinking about and up to the cardinals. I have no comment on it. We have to choose the best. The colour has no importance.

STORYLINE:
Cardinal Godfried Danneels of Belgium is said to be one of the leading contenders to become the next Pope.
Danneels, who is the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel (Malines-Bruxelles), was born on 4 June 1933 in Kanegem, diocese of Bruges, in Eastern Flanders.
After his secondary studies at the College of St. Joseph in Tielt, he earned a licentiate in theology at the Higher Institute of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Louvain in 1954, and in 1961, a doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 17 August 1957 and in 1959, he became spiritual director of the major seminary of Bruges.
Ten years later he became professor of theology at the Flemish Catholic University of Louvain and on 4 November 1977 he was named Bishop of Antwerp by Paul VI.
He was consecrated on 18 December 1977 and in the two years that he headed the diocese, he dedicated much of his time to the spiritual direction of the priests and to pastoral leadership, working assiduously towards increased collaboration between priests and laity.
In 1978 Pope John Paul II designated him President Delegate, together with Cardinal Willebrands, of the Special Synod for the Netherlands.
During the Synod of Bishops on the role of the Christian family in the Contemporary World in 1980, in which he represented his bishops' conference, he was elected by a wide majority as a member of the General Secretariat of the same Synod.
He was relator of the second general extraordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops 20 years after Vatican Council II in 1985.
On 19 December 1979, he was named Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussel by John Paul II, succeeding Cardinal Suenens.

Day 2 - Video 1: Plenary Session 3
This video is made at the DC2015 Ecclesiological Investigations Conference:
The concept of this event was to explore the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), fifty years on, through the eyes of scholars and practitioners from beyond the Roman Catholic world, with further perspectives from prominent Roman Catholics.
The focus of the gathering was broken down thematically for each day as well as around the major council documents. There was contributions on the council and its key documents from Christians belonging to other churches, figures from other faith traditions and leading secular thinkers alike. The intention is for this event was to offer something quite distinct and yet complementary to the numerous other events elsewhere marking the end of the cycle of fiftieth-anniversary programs in relation to the Second Vatican Council.
The event was a joint initiative hosted by Georgetown University, the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network (EI Network, see ei-research.net), Marymount University, Virginia and other universities, religious intuitions and communities in the DC-NOVA-Maryland region, with support from numerous other institutions nationally and worldwide. It was a major undertaking, also, of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs’ Church and World Program and, in particular, its ‘Church and the Ecumenical Future’ Project.
Other supporting institutions include Ripon Theological College, Oxford, UK; New York Theological Seminary, the Institute for Ecumenical Research and Interfaith Dialogue, University of Tübingen, Germany.
This gathering will constitute the Ninth Annual International Conference of the EI Network. Past conferences have been held in Oxford (England), Belgrade (Serbia), Assisi (Italy), Dayton-Ohio (US), Leuven (Belgium), Utrecht (Netherlands), Durham (England), Kottayam (India), Hawarden (Wales).

About the event:
Hi Tech Boat Parade on the River Dijle
Celebrating the Canonization of Father Damien, April 16-17, 2010 (Belgium)
An important part of the Belgian celebrations will take place on October 2-3, 2009. The main event is a three stage Boat Parade on the River Dijle, which will flow from Leuven—the town where Jozef De Veuster (aka Father Damien, who took care of the patients with leprosy on Molokai), joined the Picpus Congregation and where he is buried—to Tremelo, his place of birth.
Each boat will have a scale model that represents scenes from the life of Father Damien and also important events after his death (return of his remains to Belgium in 1936, the inauguration of Damiens statue in the US Capitol in 1953, the Beatification ceremony in Brussels in1994, and a pre-celebration of the canonization). These scenes will be recorded by HD cameras and will then be projected on the HD displays on the various boats and also streamed to the internet and possibly TV stations. Each boat will be equipped with two PCs, audio capabilities, lighting, solar panels, two high definition displays, webcams, GPS, and communication devices (3G, WIFI and Bluetooth). Boats will be steered through the Internet. This medium will also be used to interact with the audience through blogs, chat sessions, contests, and streaming video. 2500 floating lanterns and leds will also accompany the boats.
As the boats are steered and traced through the Internet, possibilities of managing the specific parts of the miniatures at a distance are almost limitless. Light, audio and mechatronical devices can be optimized online.
In Belgium a general hope, if not expectation, exists that President Obama, because of his Hawaiian roots, might want to celebrate Father Damien with the admirers of his work worldwide. This could be achieved through an internet broadcast. Most of the leprosy patients who were exiled to Molokai were native Hawaiians, and later became American citizens. It is a certainty that the same interest exists in the United States. Damien fought to give the sufferers of Hansens disease the semblance of a normal life: he provided medical care, organized labor and activities, but more importantly he provided them with self-respect.
If it would please the President, or one or both of his daughters, to steer one of the boats, this can easily be accomplished. All that is needed is a stable Internet connection. (Malia might be interested in hearing that Damien helped a leprosy patient that shared her name before going to Molokai).
The Boat Parade is designed to be a mainstream family event, through which the Belgian community can celebrate their native son. This format—A hi-tech presentation, using the most advanced micro and telecom technologies—was chosen to demonstrate that Father Damien is not only part of Belgium and Hawaiis past, but that he also serves as a role model for our contemporary society. Belgian technical Universities and colleges will create the specific miniature scenes, as well as the mechatronical solutions. They will work closely with the Belgian high tech industry.
On the night of October 2nd, the procession will flow through the center of Leuven (3 miles). The next morning the solar powered boats will proceed from Leuven to Werchter, where the De Veuster family attended church and were Damien went to school (6 miles). On the night of October 3d, the parade will honor Father Damians birth home in Tremelo (4 miles).
The possibility of having the Boat Parade travel to other locations to honor Father Damien is under consideration. Canal rich cities such as Honolulu (Ala Wai), Amsterdam, Bruges, Rome, Ghent, Liege, and Venice might want to salute the future saint in this contemporary manner.
