Inside Puerto Rico's Pork Highway, The Ruta Del Lechón
In Puerto Rico, there's a stretch of restaurants dedicated to one of the island's traditional dishes. Found in the neighborhood of Guavate, they are known for preparing lechón, a whole roast pig, and offering entertainment.

Inside Puerto Rico's Pork Highway, The Ruta Del Lechón
The ULTIMATE ROASTED PORK Destination at La Ruta de Lechon | Guavate, Puerto Rico
On my last day in San Juan, Puerto Rico in partnership with the Intercontinental San Juan, I headed south to Guavate to the Ruta de Lechon to eat the best roasted pork in Puerto Rico!

La Ruta de Lechon is located 1 hour south of San Juan in Guavate, Puerto Rico. Here there is a 3 mile strip of local restaurants selling the staple dish of Puerto Rico, Lechon.
Lechon is roasted pork and it's served with sides like rice, beans and morcilla. I visited two restauranants El Ranchos Original and Los Pinos. I got to visit the kitchen where they roast the pork and the back where they make the morcilla.
La Ruta de Lechon is really the best place on earth to eat roasted pork. If you find yourself in Puerto Rico definitely try to make it down to Guavate and eat Lechon for the ages!
Big thanks to my friends at the Intercontinental San Juan:

Lechonera - Roasted Pork in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico ????????/ The pork Highway / Old San Juan / Luquillo Beach
My first time in Puerto Rico, visited old San Juan and many more places
Luquillo Beach
Luquillo is known as La Capital del Sol (sun capital) and La Riviera de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico's riviera). Luquillo was founded in 1797 by Cristóbal Guzmán. The town was named after the Indian cacique Loquillo, who died a few years after the last Indian rebellion in 1513.
Pork is a staple across Latin America, but few places showcase the simplistic beauty of the meat than the “Pork Highway” in Puerto Rico. While pork hasn’t been integral to Puerto Rico’s cuisine for the entirety of its history, pigs were brought by Columbus, so residents of the island have had a few centuries to perfect their pork-cooking techniques (for which we are very, very thankful).
The dozens of restaurants that make up the “La Ruta del Lechón,” or “Pork Highway,” have become a bit of a tourist excursion of late, but this doesn’t stop the locals from also continuing to congregate as the delicious menu options provide a roadside oasis. With pigs roasting on open spits, their skin crispy and gorgeously caramelized and meat that tastes like heaven, it’s not hard to see why it’s become so popular.
El Morro. As one of the first military defenses in the Americas, it brings you back in time and has an amazing view of the entrance to the San Juan bay

Guavate
Welcome to the roasted pig capital of the world. This is my hometown, Guavate (Goo-AH-VAH-TEH), I grew up here. It's a very small barrio in the mountains of Cayey (CAH-jay). Tourist almost never come here so it's a good place to pig out and experience the REAL Puerto Rico. It's a well kept secret, you won't find any information anywhere else except some blogs and perhaps some travel guides. This is perhaps the most exposure this little town has ever gotten so please don't take it down or flag it.

Top 10 Puerto Rican Street Foods | The BEST Street Food in Puerto Rico
In the summer of 2018, I visited the island of Puerto Rico and had a blast eating and drinking my way through the the island with my travel buddy Mariel de Viaje.

In addition to its warm weather and gorgeous beaches, Puerto Rico is also well known for its rich and fatty foods, fresh seafood, and strong tropical drinks. I tried dozens of dishes while I was there, but I wanted to share the absolute best with you guys with this list of the top 10 street foods I ate on the island. Let’s dive in!
My Film Making Kit ►
-Alcapurria
I found this fried, cylindrical fritter in two locations: Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant in Piñones and Kiosko Luquillo in the town of Luquillo. It’s made with a dough of mashed green plantains that is stuffed with a savory meat filling and then deep-fried. The kind I had was filled with some extremely flavorful blue crab meat and was like a big croqueta!
-Bacalaito
While I was at Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant in Piñones, I also tried the Bacalaito, a thin, flat, deep fried fritter made of cod fish, flour, and baking powder. There are so many textures at work here: crispy, crunchy, dense, and chewy, and the flavors of cod fish and the spices are insanely delicious. Have this greasy street food with a nice, cold beer!
-Lechon
To find this heavenly roasted pork dish, head to La Ruta de Lechon in Guavate. Here, the entire pig is roasted over a flame for four hours until the skin gets crispy, but the meat underneath is perfectly tender and juicy. It’s pork, so of course it’s fatty, but it is so worth it, especially the crispy skin, which is called cuerito. If you love pork you have to try lechon!
-Morcilla
This unique sausage, which contains a mix of pork blood, rice, and spices, might not sound appetizing to everyone, but just give it a chance. I tried some fantastic morcilla along La Ruta de Lechon in Guavate and it blew me away. It was tender and flavorful, with a fantastic texture from the rice, and was one of the best morcillas I’ve ever had.
-Mofongo
One of the more well-known Puerto Rican foods, I tried this mashed plantain, meat, and vegetable dish three times: at Los Barriles in Piñones, Vaca Brava in Old San Juan, and Costa Mia in Las Croabas. My favorite was the seafood mofongo at Costa Mia, which came with large, succulent shrimp and mussels in an amazing, flavorful sauce. It was outstanding!
-Fiambrera
This Puerto Rican bowl dish, which I found at Alcapurria Quema in the Lote 23 food truck center in San Juan, can be made with lots of different ingredients, including meat, chicken, corned beef, ropa vieja, carne asada, chicharron, vegetables, or cod fish. The flavors and textures were out of this world! This traditions and filling dish’s name literally translates to “everything mixed into a big plate.”
-Oysters
If you go to a small hut in Pinones called Ostiones Vivos Kiosko, you’ll find some small, but incredible, raw oysters, which is one of my favorite types of seafood. They are freshly caught every day, and a squeeze of lime takes their flavor to a whole new level. Get them if you want some quality seafood on a budget!
-Carrucho/Conch Ceviche
After so many heavy and fried foods, it was nice to have something that was light and refreshing when I visited Kiosko Luquillo in Luquillo. The conch was moist and buttery, and had a texture similar to a scallop, with a mussel-like taste, and a nice blend of spices on it. It was, hands-down, my favorite dish in Los Kioskos de Luquillo.
-Pitorro
You won’t find this homemade moonshine-like drink in any restaurant or kiosko because it’s illegal to sell, but luckily for me, a friend on the island hooked me up with three flavors: Coconut, Tamarind-Passionfruit, and Coconut with Almond. The first two weren’t that strong, but the Coconut with Almond will knock you out!
-Piña Colada
After a long day out in the sun, it was nice to cool down with this tropical drink at Costa Mia in Las Croabas. With a mound of whipped cream, a cherry, and lots of rum in it, it was sweet, refreshing, and full of delicious pineapple flavor!
And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed my list of the top 10 Puerto Rican street foods. If you did, please give this video a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel!
