Today we spend the night at a wonderful holiday park at Curio Bay in the Catlins of Southern Otago.
Hector's Dolphins Play in Curio Bay in the Catlins, New Zealand
Hector's dolphins are one of the smallest marine dolphins in the world, and grow no more than 1.5 m in length.Only found in New Zealand’s waters, this distinctive grey dolphin with black and white markings and a round dorsal fin is the most easily recognized species of dolphin in New Zealand. This pod plays in the surf in the Catlins - near the southern most tip of New Zealand.

Exploring The Catlins: Curio Bay & Niagara Falls – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 167: Today is the second day of exploring The Catlins Coast in New Zealand! We are checking out a fossilised forest and penguin hangout at Curio Bay & Porpoise Bay, as well as seeing the New Zealand version of Niagara Falls!

After an awesome day on our Catlins Road Trip yesterday, we are hitting the road once again to explore more of the Catlins Coast! This time, we are heading to Curio Bay!
Curio Bay in the Catlins is not only a location of an ancient fossilised forest (or petrified forest), it is also a place to spot yellow-eyed penguins for free. However, we are not here are the right time of day to see penguins. We are here at low tide to fully explore the petrified forest at Curio Bay.
After Curio Bay, we head next door to Porpoise Bay to have ice cream and go to a viewpoint over the Catlins Coast.
Finally, Niagara Falls New Zealand is on our itinerary. It is said to be the smallest waterfall in New Zealand. We can’t believe this is the first waterfall in the Catlins we are going to see when the Catlins is famous for its Catlins waterfalls.

Having been told you can see dolphins at Porpoise Bay we decided to spend the day on the beach there. After a few hours swimming and generally enjoying the water, we were lucky enough to see and capture a few short clips of them on the camera. Here’s what we saw and we felt very privileged to have seen them. We had heard they regularly visit the bay, but we were no less excited to see some of the world’s rarest dolphins. Hope you enjoy our short video in dedication to them.
