Docking in PORT CHALMERS (DUNEDIN) l New Zealand Cruise Vlog l Ep. 8
It's a new day which means we are in Port Chalmers (Dunedin). As you can see in this video, this port is a mix of industrial with some things within walking distance. However, there is really nothing to do in Port Chalmers which you'll see in a vlog or two. If you are not planning on doing a shore excursion here, consider taking a shuttle bus to Dunedin that your cruise line will most likely offer for around $15-$20 USD. Dunedin has more of a downtown area with lots of shops and cafes.
The tour I did today is called, NATURE’S WONDERS WILDLIFE SAFARI. I booked it through Norwegian Cruise Line though most cruise lines offer this tour. Here is the tour description from NCL's website:
“A scenic drive takes you past the charming towns of Sawyer's Bay, Roseneath and St. Leonard's, which all rest along the shores of beautiful Otago Harbor. Your drive then continues along the craggy coastline to Natures Wonders, located just beyond Taiaroa Head.
Arriving at the Center's Reception area, you'll board an 8-wheel drive vehicle (Argo), built specifically to take you places that are normally inaccessible, or a mini coach, to start your tour of the farm. You will swap vehicles half way through the tour.
The Otago Peninsula headland is arguably the most precious wildlife habitat in New Zealand and the farm owned by the Reid family is right on the forefront of this headland. Here, amidst truly spectacular scenery, the world's rarest penguins, the yellow-eyed Hoiho, the little blue penguins, the New Zealand fur seals, and the Spotted Shags all live in harmony.
Stop by the mythical Maui's Footprint location which offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Otago Peninsula. Descending from a height of 620 feet above sea level, you’ll stop at a breeding colony of Cormorants, also Spotted Shag, found nestled on a rugged cliff face that rises directly above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
You’ll find a breeding colony of New Zealand Fur seals. It's a definite treat to watch them in their natural habitat, basking on the rocks and swimming in the pools. A beachfront ride will then bring you to Penguin Beach, where you'll be able to view little blue penguins in their nests, and if you are lucky, perhaps spot some very rare and shy yellow-eyed penguins.
Your route also ascends from the beach to the highest point on the farm. At 659 feet above sea level, this spot affords an absolutely amazing 360-degree view of this awesome peninsula and its remarkable natural setting.
Back in Dunedin, you’ll have a brief tour of some of the city's highlights before returning to the pier.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

Port Chalmers: The Place We Call Home
Port Chalmers is a vibrant community with a population of 3,000. The village lies around 15 kilometres northeast from Dunedin’s city centre. Port Chalmers has a strong cultural scene and is home to a number of artists, potters, musicians, jewellers, designers and sculptors. The people who call Port Chalmers home come from all walks of life; from Port workers, creatives, teachers, farmers, business owners and more. This diverse community coupled with the area’s natural beauty and historic buildings makes Port a particularly interesting place.

Cost blowout on Port Chalmers link
A proposed cycling and walking path between St Leonards and Port Chalmers is too expensive to build in its current form.
The New Zealand Transport Agency is going back to the drawing board with the concept, to see if it can be made for less money.
It was initially costed at around $6m.
But new estimates, following detailed design, show that figure would more than double.
Authorities say it's not a viable project at the inflated cost.
The news has come as a blow to the coastal community, as residents were looking forward to the path being constructed over the next few years.
Planners are aiming to cut costs by half with a new design.
