The town recently worked with Tourism WA and Pilbara Development Commission to produce a short vignette that will be shown on board cruise ships docking in Port Hedland, showcasing the natural beauty of our unique landscape, the opportunity to get up close and witness the mining and shipping trade with regular industry tours, art and culture in Port Hedland through Spinifex Hill Art Studios, the Courthouse Gallery and the vibrant splashes of urban art in the West End.

Hedland Art Awards and Indigenous Art 300914

In the Pilbara region of my Electorate of Durack is the iron ore town of Port Hedland. If you’re travelling to the Pilbara, then Id urge you to view the Hedland Art Awards at the Courthouse Gallery.

As the local member, it was a great pleasure to officially launch the Awards which showcase the talents of established and emerging artists, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, based in the Pilbara, Kimberley, Gascoyne and Mid West regions of WA.
When thinking about the development of the Aboriginal Art industry in Durack just 10 years ago, places like Roebourne and the Mowajum community in Derby were leading the way.

Robe River Rodeo

I was a participant of FORM's 2012 P.H.otography program. Sponsored by BHP and based in Port Hedland it involved 3 days of workshops and a trip to Pannawonica's infamous and crazy Robe River Rodeo. The weekend spent at the rodeo was a spectacular event that involved rolling out the swag, bush cooking and photographing the Rodeo riders doing what they live to do. This was the film that I put together for the exhibition that opened at the courthouse gallery on the 19th of April 2013.

For all you technically minded people, it was filmed on the Canon 5D mk3, the 16-35mm F2.8 and the 70-200mm F2.8 IS.
