NRM Port Adelaide 2015 Riding in SAR Brakevan 7553
Onboard footage of riding in beautifully restored South Australian Railways narrow gauge 7550 class brakevan no. 7553 on Sunday 31st of May 2015.
This brakevan and it's counterpart SAR second class coach no. 144 carry passengers to and from Port Adelaide Junction to Woodville North on a specially laid track at NRM Port Adelaide.
Historical info on exhibits:
Motive power for this movement has always been ex. Broken Hill Associated Smelters no. 4 0-6-0 tank engine Peronne built in 1918 for war service in the First World War. When condemned after the war as war surplus it was sold to BHAS for use at their smelter in Port Pirie as a industrial works shunter.
There it stayed until it was bought by a private owner Mr. F.B Andrews in November of 1965 after it was condemned and presented to the railway museum at Mile End.
In 1987 however there was massive efforts to bring the locomotive back to operation, and after successful trials at the Pichi Richi Railway in Quorn it returned to Adelaide.
In 1988 it hauled the first official train at the museums current home at Port Adelaide. Premier at the time John Bannon was at the controls on this auspicious occasion in the museums history.
After 27 years she is still running shuttle trips for 100s of passengers every year.
Brakevan 7553:
Brakevan 7553 was built in 1938 and was used on country narrow gauge goods train particularly around the Peteborough Divisional area and to Wilmington.
Five class members were built to provide passenger accomodation on lightly used lines that didn't have an all passenger service. Instead it was attached to goods trains where nine passengers could sit comfortably with room for the luggage, parcels and the guard.
Four were in use with the SAR and the fifth one was used on the iron ore BHP tramway in Whyalla.
7553 went into ownership of Australian National Railways went the SAR was amalgamated in ANR in 1978 but saw little operational use.
Therefore she was obtained by the NRM in December of 1987 where she was restored to operation along with 2nd class car 144 and louvred van V 1990 to run shuttles on this length of track.
2nd Class Car 144:
144 was built in 1894 for use on the northern narrow gauge lines as a 2nd class longitudinal seating style coach. She was part of a body type design that was nicknamed Short Tom with their larger cousins being Long Tom coaches.
It was fitted with electric lighting in 1909 when most households didn't even have electric lighting, this was a rarity in those days.
It was also fitted with air brakes in August of 1911 and in the 1950s it was used as a trailer car behind model 75 type Railcar for school trips.
In March 1971 she was condemned and was purchased by the Australian Railway Historical Society SA Division and was made available to Pichi Richi Railway for use on their trains throughout the mid 70s.
It was transferred to Mile End in 1982 then to Port Adelaide for refurbishment in 1988.
V Type Louvered Van 1990
V 1990 was one of the first to be constructed for Northern narrow gauge operations in October of 1899. After nearly 80 years of service it was written off in October of 1979. It was transferred to the museum in September of 1988.

Burra South Australia to Renmark South Australia B 64 3 of 6
Continuing my ride back towards Wentworth. The country opens out again from Burra and you get the long straights again. But by this stage my rear tyre was almost shot. So I wasn't complaining too much. Critters at Border Village reckoned I'd be lucky to make Port Augusta. Well showed them.
