Railfanning Toronto Union Station - Meets, Endless Action, F59PH's, & More!
In early August, I made the journey to Toronto, Canada, for a 2 week trip. Considering I haven't been up to Toronto in nearly 6 years, I made every day count, and jamming in as much trains as possible everywhere I could. One of the first places I visited, was Toronto Union Station.
Union Station is the hub for all rail travel in Ontario, and Canada as a whole. With nearly 250,000 passengers traveling on trains both arriving and leaving this area daily, there's a constant flow of trains all day. A total of 7 GO Train lines all converge at Union Station, along with 5 VIA Rail routes, 1 Amtrak line, and the 15 minute scheduled Union Pearson Express airport trains. I visited this area on two different occasions, but merged them all into one video. During my two visits, I got treated to some awesome action, and some cool surprises as well.
I started out at a pedestrian bridge, that crosses the busy mainline and the GO Bathurst Storage yard, just to the west of Union Station. Classic CN searchlight signals are present on this section of line, but their days are numbered, with the presence of new hooded vader signals. Caught the typical train action here, including the appearance of a GO F59PH. Nice to see them still around and running! Also got some mini horn action from both VIA and UP Express trains, due to workers doing some maintenance to the signals.
Afterwards, I visited both Blue Jay Way, and the infamous Skywalk at Union Station, which provides views of the constant flow of trains arriving and departing Union Station, on the west side. The flagship train of the VIA Rail system, The Canadian, also arrived from its 2,775 mile journey from Vancouver. Awesome to see both F40PH locomotives, and the classic stainless steel Budd Equipment still running together in 2016! Only in Canada! Also caught 2 separate GO F59PH's, seconds apart pulling their respective trains in and out of Union.
All September long, I'll be posting videos from around the Toronto area (GTA) featuring GO, VIA, UP Express, Amtrak, CN, and CP trains! During my trip, I also crossed the border to Buffalo, New York. Lots of great CSX and Amtrak there as well! Stay tuned!
Thanks for watching!

The Memory Store: All the soil is a very rich soil from Europe or the West Indies...
Gary Blackmore discusses why the soil surrounding Captain Blackmore’s Heritage Manor in Port Union, NL is so rich and fertile.
The Memory Store is part of the HFNL’s goal to foster a greater appreciation of historic places, by researching the stories and histories of historic places, and making those stories more accessible to the general public. This research includes short video interview clips with people about heritage buildings as well as background research and photography of the historic places.
The HFNL is working to document the architectural history and the associated narratives of Newfoundland’s historic places, in and around the St. John’s region. This research project will form part of a permanent collection with Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Digital Archives Initiative.
We will be featuring a selection of short stories about historic places in the province, in the form of short oral history interviews conducted with the people who care about those places. If you have a personal memory about a historic place in Newfoundland and Labrador, and want to add your voice to the Memory Store project, let us know at ich@heritagefoundation.ca

Trump's Biggest Enemy In The Courts Gave The Spanish State Of The Union Response (HBO)
Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California, was an obvious choice to deliver the Democratic Party’s Spanish-language response to the State of the Union address. He’s the child of Mexican immigrants. He represented a heavily Latino district in Los Angeles during his 24 years in congress.
And as attorney general of the most populous state in the union, Becerra has already sued the Trump administration 45 times to block some of its biggest moves on healthcare, the environment, and, most importantly, immigration.
Trump’s address — in spite of its gestures toward reconciliation — repeated the same message on immigration he’s been delivering since his campaign. That set Becerra up to draw a sharp contrast between Trump and the Democrats for the potential Latino voters watching live on Telemundo and Univision.
“Tonight was supposed to be about convincing us that, from here on out, the deceit and dysfunction would stop, and that cooperation would begin,” Becerra said in his speech. “What we heard was the same tired refrain of building walls.”
But distinguishing the Democratic Party from Trump “isn’t tough,” as Becerra told VICE News. Much harder is reconciling the profound divisions that exist on immigration within the Democratic party — between a newly ascendant left wing that’s turned “Abolish ICE” into a slogan, and an establishment that has for decades played an active role in dramatically expanding the immigration enforcement system.

America's Most Beautiful Abandoned Railroad Tracks - Hiking Union Pacific's Old Provo Utah Branch
We are off to explore some of America's most beautiful abandoned Railroad tracks, the soon to be rebuilt old Union Pacific line from Salt Lake City to Provo around the Point of the Mountain to the new Silicone Slopes in Utah County, home to many computer software companies including Adobe. The last of the line, from Draper to American Fork Canyon is some of the most amazing abandoned Railroad track. While walkable for the most part, the tracks have a bicycle - walking path alongside as well.
****************************************************************
The line was sold to UDOT for conversion into the Blue Line light rail from the heart of Salt Lake City to Draper. And someday soon, to the Silicone Slopes in Utah County. We take a quick look at Adobe History and the connection to digital audio recording with inventor Tom Stockham and his Soundstream recorder and Telarc label recordings.

The I.W.A. Strike Performed by Clara Stevens; PEA 160 No. 1027
When Peacock returned to Newfoundland in the summer of 1959, he recorded two locally composed songs: “The Loggers Plight” (PEA 145 No. 969) performed by Arthur Nicolle of Rocky Harbour and “The I.W.A. Strike” (160-1027) composed and performed by Clara Stevens. Both songs pertain to the controversial unionization of the logging industry and had been made up the previous winter during a bitter and divisive loggers’ strike called by the International Woodworkers of America (I.W.A.) (Collins, 2014; Sutherland, 1995). Peacock excluded this “The I.W.A. Strike” from Songs of the Newfoundland Outports because he assumed that both songs were similar.
