In the department of the Bouches du Rhône, a few kilometres from Marseille, Cassis inevitably evokes a colourful fishing port, the rocky inlets of the calanques and the poet Frédéric Mistral. His famous quote. One may have seen Paris, but if one hasn't seen Cassis, one hasn't seen anything – Qu'a vist Paris, se noun a vist Cassis, a ren vist – is not just typical Provençal exaggeration.
Cassis is also one of France's outstanding wine-growing areas. One of the first three French wine regions to be classed as an AOC by decree on May 15, 1936, twelve wine estates produce 1,000,000 bottles per year from the 200 hectares of precious vineyards that tumble down the terraced slopes of the hills. All three colours are offered but the majority of the production is white wines.
The historic core of Cassis has an original identity and character that you can fathom in each quarter: the port, the fishermen's quarter with its warren of alleyways and stairs, the bourgeois quarter and its beautiful 16th and 17th century houses. Cassis is a commune situated east of Marseille in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, whose coastline is known in English as the French Riviera, in Southern France. In 2016, it had a population of 7,265.
It is a popular tourist destination, famous for its cliffs and the sheltered inlets called calanques. The wines of Cassis are white and rosé, and not to be confused with crème de cassis, a specialty of Burgundy which takes its name from blackcurrants (cassis), not the commune.
The town is situated on the Mediterranean coast, about 12.4 miles east of Marseille. Cap Canaille 394 metres (1,293 feet), between Cassis and La Ciotat is one of the highest maritime bluffs in Europe, a sailor's landmark for millennia. It is east of Marseille and in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. One of its main beach, called Bestouan is made cooler by a karstic source.
The site where Cassis now sits was first occupied between 500 and 600 BC by the Ligures, who constructed a fortified habitation at the top of the Baou Redon. These people lived by fishing, hunting, and by farming.
During the Roman times, Cassis was part of the maritime route made by the Emperor Antoninus Pius. It was a small village, established mainly around the Arena and Corton beaches. The principal livelihood was fishing and maritime trade with North Africa and the Middle East. Several archaeological discoveries attest to this.[citation needed]
From the 5th to the 10th century, invasions by foreign tribes led the population to seek refuge in the castrum, a fortified city that, in 1223, became the property of the Seigneurie des Les Baux-de-Provence.
In the fifteenth century, Cassis was ceded to the Counts of Provence, then René of Anjou gave the town to the Bishops of Marseille, who ruled the town until the Revolution of 1789.

Mai 2017 - Le centre de Cassis est très joli avec ses rues fleuries et ses maisons en couleur près du port. Le château de Cassis (du XIIIème siècle aujourd'hui propriété privée convertie en chambres d'hôte de luxe) surplombe le village et la grande place où se regroupent les joueurs de pétanque et touristes près à embarquer pour une visite des calanques en bateau. La plage de la Grande Mer derrière le port et celle du Bestouan au début de la presqu'île sont les plus prisées. La plage de l'Arène au pied du Cap Canaille (accessible depuis le rond point du casino) parait plus sauvage. Dans l'après midi, lorsque la chaleur se fait trop pesante, une petite balade dans les ruelles ombragées avec une glace à la main vous fera le plus grand bien.

Situé à à peu près 30km de Marseille, Cassis (prononcé « Cassi ») est célèbre pour ses falaises et calanques mais aussi pour les vins de Cassis (rosé et blanc). Quoi de plus agréable de siroter un rosé bien frais avec une vue à couper le souffle!

A un peu plus de 2 heures des hautes alpes, les calanques de Cassis nous accueillent pour 3 jours. De St Cyr/mer à Bandol, de Port Miou à En Vau, du cap Canaille au sémaphore du bec de l'aigle, régalez vous de belles images; Des falaises majestueuses, une eau d’un bleu profond et des points de vue à couper le souffle. Voilà un petit bout de paradis, un lieu incroyable a ne rater sous aucun prétexte. Bon d’accord, faut transpirer un peu !
GETTING LOST IN CASSIS
So today Freedom Of The Seas ported in Marseille but we decided to head over East to Cassis for the day which was about an hour and half-2 hours out. It is a cute fishing port surrounded by giant cliffs and calanques. The architecture was really pretty and colorful and it was a actually very calm, peaceful and relaxing…until we got lost lol.
