The Dōzen Caldera was formed more than 5,000,000 years ago.
Approximately 10,000 years ago global warming caused the sea level to rise, and sea water entered the caldera, creating the Inner Sea.
Strong north-west winds and waves from the Sea of Japan have gradually eroded the coastline, creating what is now the impressive landscape of the Kuniga Coast.
Mt. Takuhi, the center of the volcanic cone, is located on the Inner Sea side.
There are many calm, small port areas nearby, each with a long history.
The magnificent landscapes of Nishinoshima Island are something very special. People of the Oki Islands should be proud of this and share this beauty with the world.

Spending the day by the sea (Jogashima Island + Miura Beach)
It was a public holiday so we rented a car, picked up some friends, and drove off to #Jogashima.
It wasn't that far so it was perfect to go on a short notice. We stopped by #Miura beach as well to appreciate the sun as it was closing in on winter already.

가고시마 여행의 마지막 여정으로 나는 섬마을에 가 보기로 했다． 고시키시마 섬은 가고시마 남서쪽 바다에 있는데， 본토에서 약 40여 km 떨어져 있다． 항구를 출발한지 한 시간 10분 후 배는 고시키시마에 도착했다． 세 개의 섬으로 이루어진 고시키시마는 인구 ５천 600여 명의 조용한 섬이다． 여기서는 모래톱이 쌓여 호수를 만든， 4km에 달하는 사주를 비롯해 희귀한 자연현상을 많이 볼 수 있다． 쾌속정을 타고 해안가로 나갔다． 얼마 후， 깎아지른 듯한 해안 절벽이 나온다. 멀게는 ８천만 년 전 백악기에 형성된 기암괴석들이， 조물주의 조각품 전시장이라 할만하다． 이 바위는 학이 날개를 펴고 날아오르는 것 같다고 해서 학 동굴 바위라 부르는데， 튀어나온 바위는 부리 끝처럼 보인다． 두 손을 모으고 기도를 하는 것 같아 보이는 합장바위도 있고 작은 암초들이 나란히 늘어서 있는 금산해안은 마치 한 폭의 동양화 같다． 하지만 이곳에서 가장 유명한 것은 무엇보다 바로 이 나폴레옹 바위다． 짧게 깎은 머리며 날카로운 매부리코가 영락없이 나폴레옹을 닮았다． 나폴레옹 바위는 한 쪽에선 무척 강인하고 거만해 보인다． 하지만 다른 쪽에서 보면 눈물을 흘리고 있는 것처럼 보인다． 마치 권력의 무상함을 말해주고 있는 것 같다．
