Liverpool is a maritime city in northwest England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. A key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it's also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Ferries cruise the waterfront, where the iconic mercantile buildings known as the Three Graces – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head. The local authority is Liverpool City Council, the most populous local government district within the metropolitan county of Merseyside and the largest within the Liverpool City Region. Liverpool historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the south west of the county of Lancashire. It became a borough in 1207 and a city in 1880. In 1889, Liverpool became a county borough independent of Lancashire.
Liverpool sits on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary and its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. The city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007, and was European Capital of Culture together with Stavanger, Norway, in 2008. Several areas of the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street.
The popularity of The Beatles and other groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination. Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, matches between the two being known as the Merseyside derby. The city's namesake club is the sole British club to win five European Cups. The world-famous Grand National horse race takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city. Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which, historically, was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
Transport in Liverpool is primarily centred on the city's road and rail networks, both of which are extensive and provide links across the United Kingdom. As a major city, Liverpool has direct road links with many other areas within England. To the east, the M62 motorway connects Liverpool with Hull and along the route provides links to several large cities, including Manchester, Leeds and Bradford. Liverpool is served by two separate rail networks. The local rail network is managed and run by Merseyrail and provides links throughout Merseyside and beyond (see Local Travel below), while the national network, which is managed by Network Rail, provides Liverpool with connections to major towns and cities across the England. The Port of Liverpool is one of Britain's largest ports, providing passenger ferry services across the Irish Sea to Belfast, Dublin and the Isle of Man. Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which is located in the south of the city, provides Liverpool with direct air connections across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Port of Liverpool Building | 30 James Street
The Port of Liverpool Building is a Grade II* listed building and one of the Three Graces along the city's waterfront, sitting alongside with the Liver Building and Cunard Building.
Designed by Sir Arnold Thornely, the building was completed in 1907, and acted as the headquarters for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
As a world-renowned port, Liverpool was a target for the Luftwaffe during the May Blitz of 1941. Unfortunately, a heavy bomb landed in the basement of the Port of Liverpool building, causing an explosion in the eastern side; the structural integrity of the building remained intact despite some damage.
Following its restoration, the Port of Liverpool building acted as the head offices for the renamed Mersey Docks and Harbour Company for 87 years. However, in 1994, the company moved to new headquarters in the Maritime Centre, north of Liverpool.
The Port of Liverpool Building still stands in the city and is a reminder of the Liverpool's extensive maritime history.

A look at the iconic Royal Liver Building in Liverpool on on Saturday 18th July 2015.
The Royal Liver Building is a Grade I listed building located in Liverpool, England. It is sited at the Pier Head and along with the neighbouring Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront. It is also part of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City.
Opened in 1911, the building is the purpose-built home of the Royal Liver Assurance group, which had been set up in the city in 1850 to provide locals with assistance related to losing a wage-earning relative. One of the first buildings in the world to be built using reinforced concrete, the Royal Liver Building stands at 90 m (300 ft) tall. It was the tallest storied building in Europe from completion until 1932 and the tallest in the United Kingdom until 1961. The Royal Liver Building is now however only the joint-fourth tallest structure in the City of Liverpool, having been overtaken in height by West Tower, Radio City Tower and Liverpool Cathedral.
Today the Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two fabled Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea. Legend has it that were these two birds to fly away, then the city would cease to exist!
The building is crowned by a pair of clock towers: as a ship passed along the river, mariners could tell the time from these. The clocks were made by Gent and Co. of Leicester andare 7.6 m (25 ft) in diameter, larger than those of London's famous landmark, Big Ben, holding the distinction of being the largest electronically driven clocks in the UK. They were originally named George clocks because they were started at the precise time that King George V was crowned on 22 June 1911. In 1953, electronic chimes were installed to serve as a memorial to the members of the Royal Liver Friendly Society who died during the two World Wars. The electronic chimes are basically a Glockenspiel type affair where the sound is amplified and fed out through huge loudspeakers in the towers above the clocks faces. Unfortunately they did not sound in this video.

Liverpool is a historic maritime city in northwest England.
Liverpool, also known as The Pool Of Life, has been described as having “the most splendid setting of any English city”, is located on the Liverpool Bay of the Irish Sea.
It is a vibrant city with great cultural heritage and the famous Pier Head Waterfront being a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks also called The Three Graces, it includes:
The Royal Liver Building,
The Cunard Building,
And the third is the Port of Liverpool Building.
Next stop is the Albert Dock, a complex of dock buildings and warehouses, and the major tourist attraction.
It was the first non-combustible structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood.
The area around St. John’s Gardens, referred to as the city’s Cultural Quarter, is home to numerous public monuments, sculptures and neoclassical architecture such as:
The William Brown Museum and Library,
The Picton Reading Rooms,
The Walker Art Gallery,
The Wellington’s Column,
The Empire Theatre,
The North Western Hall,
And of course the most prominent
St. George’s Hall, regarded as the best example of a neoclassical building.

And the heritage of The Beatles, which is a popular tourist traction.
The town is renowned for being the birthplace of many famous musicians.
In England football is very important. There are two big clubs in Liverpool.
FC Liverpool plays at Anfield.
And Everton FC plays at Goodison Park.
The most visible landmark of the city is 138 meters tall Radio City Tower.

A Whiz Around Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock
Today I am in Liverpool and I'm exploring the legendary Royal Prince Albert Dock. Here I meet the Beatles, Edward 7th, a fine horse, too many padlocks to count, the Tate Gallery and of course the historic dockyard. Oh yes and there are some impressive buildings too.
Join me as I wonder alongside the Mersey. The ships have all gone, but there is plenty to feast one's eyes on.
