Porta Borsari, the main entrance to Verona in Roman times.
Porta Borsari, the main entrance to Verona in Roman times.
Porta Borsari is an ancient Roman gate in Verona, northern Italy.
It dates to the 1st century AD, though it was most likely built over a pre-existing gate from the 1st century BC. An inscription dating from emperor Gallienus' reign reports another reconstruction in 265 AD. The Via Postumia (which here became the decumanus maximus) passed through the gate, which was the city's main entrance and was therefore richly decorated. It also originally had an inner court, now disappeared.
The gate's Roman name was Porta Iovia, as it was located near a small temple dedicated to Jupiter lustralis. In the Middle Ages it was called Porta di San Zeno, while the current name derives from the guard soldiers which were paid the dazio (Latin bursarii).
The façade, in local white limestone, has two arches flanked by semi-columns with Corinthian capitals which supports entablature and pediment. In the upper part is a two-floor wall with twelve arched windows, some of which are included in small niches with triangular pediment.

Verona - Italy: What to do, How and Why to spend your holidays here
If you are planning to spend your holidays in #Verona, the city of love, in Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in Verona, with a sightseeing Verona map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Verona, the city.
In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions in Verona that you can't go home without having seen, including Arena di Verona, Ponte Pietra, the Cathedral of Verona, Santa Maria Antica church, Piazza delle Erbe, Porta Leoni, Castel Vecchio Bridge, Austrian arsenal Franz Josef I.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit Verona, with a clear map of Verona village and tips for nearby attractions.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Verona, with his rich historic city center.
WHAT
Verona, once a Roman colony since 89 BC, today one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy.
Two of William Shakespeare's plays are set in Verona: Romeo and Juliet, of course, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
The city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its urban structure and architecture.
Ponte Pietra is a Roman arch bridge completed in 100 BC. It cross the Adige River.
The cathedral of Verona has a Romanesque style and dates to 1187 (in the video I made a mistake saying 1185).
Santa Maria Antica has a Romanesque style and dates to 1185.
Piazza delle Erbe was the town's forum during the time of the Roman Empire. You can find the market from from Monday to Saturday, and this view is from Osteria alla Torre.
Porta Leoni is the 1st century BC ruin of the Roman city gate.
But the great touristic star of Verona is the Roman amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona.
#arenadiverona is the largest in Italy after Rome's Colosseo and the arena of Capua.
The Castel Vecchio Bridge was built in 1355. It had the world's largest span at the time of its construction (50 meters).
HOW
I suggest you to start your trip in Verona from Ponte Pietra and follow this circular tour that will bring you to all the attractions I show in the video, one after the other.
Once you have passed the Castelvecchio bridge, you can decide to visit also the Austrian arsenal Franz Josef I, and walking along the riverside you will have a beautiful overall view of the city.
And about the Italian food, I suggest you to have your meal in IV Novembre road, full of trendy restaurants.
WHY
You like artistic heritage?…you like opera?? You like William Shakespeare??? So, you’ll like Verona,!
Verona is known all over the world as the city of love”.
But with its long history, dating back over 2000 years, and an entire historic center declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will fall in love with its treasures kept unchanged over time.

One Day in Verona, Italy: How to See Everything
Start at the bottom and work your way up. You'll see all the Romeo and Juliet sites, including where they lived and where they got married, along with the best views in Verona and amazing churches and piazzas.
Be sure to subscribe to see all our adventures around the world:
As you can see at the end of the video, we had time to spare. So if you want to go up the Torre dei Lamberti or go into the Arena, you can. Just make sure you watch your times, since ALL THE CHURCHES CLOSE AT 5pm, with a siesta break from 1-1:30.
You can easily see the entire city in one day. We started at the bottom (San Zeno and Castelvecchio) and zig-zagged our way up to the top, ending at the viewpoint (at Piazzale Castel San Pietro) for sunset. A little better planning would reduce the amount of walking we did (we covered more than 30,000 steps), but the town is so small that you can get across the entire thing in about 15 minutes.
Here is a list of everything we saw and the corresponding timestamps:
0:27 - Basilica San Zeno (where Romeo and Juliet got married)
3:01 - Castelvecchio
3:20 - Castelvecchio Bridge (aka Ponte Scaligero) - medieval bridge with the world's largest arch (at the time it was built)
