Portara Naxos Greece
Naxos, the biggest of Cyclades islands, has many places for sightseeing. The most popular is Portara Naxos, which is basically the remains of an unfinished ancient temple dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. Portara is located at Palatia islet, facing the little island of Delos. It is a great spot to watch the sunset and enjoy a panoramic view to Paros, Mykonos and Syros.

Naxos Video Map:
Naxos Town, the capital impresses visitors with its unique beauty. It has all the characteristics of Cycladic architecture, but many monuments of different periods are noticeable upon entering the harbor. On the islet of Palatia in the harbor, there is the Portara -- a doorway made of marble columns -- an impressive welcome to the island of Dionysus which promises its guests an unforgettable holiday. The town is built in the middle of the west coast, in the same location as the ancient city. In the northern part of town, we find the archaeological site of Grotta, while the Venetian castle on the hill keeps the medieval atmosphere and mystery of that period alive. There are hotels of all categories and all amenities, restaurants and tavernas with delicious local cuisine in town.

Naxos, Greece
This is the beautiful island of Naxos, one of the Cyclades. The main town is made up of archetypal narrow whitewashed lanes winding their way up to the remnants of a medieval fortress. Distinguishing the town from those on other island capitals is the Portara
''NAXOS PORTARA'' 2015 GREECE.
Lygdamis was overthrown in 506 BC and the temple, which was supposed to be at least a hundred feet tall, was never completed. Today all that remains of that temple is the Portara. The temple was supposed to be Ionic, 59 m long and 28 m wide with a peristyle of 6x12 columns with double porticos at its end. It is believed that this temple was to be built in the honor of Apollo, the Greek God who protected music and poets. Proof of this lies in the fact that the temple faces in the direction of Delos, which is believed to be Apollo's birthplace. However, some scholars believe that this temple was to be built in the honor of Dionysus, the God of wine and patron God of Naxos. The gate is around 6 m high and 3.5 m wide built with four separate columns. Each column weighs about 20 tons. During the Middle Ages, a church was built behind the Portara. Later under Venetian rule, it was dismantled so that the marble could be used to build the Kastro, which is a fortress built during the time of the Venetians and other monuments and buildings.WAS 500-600 BC.
Naxos Beach - Greece

Naxos Island
Naxos is such a versatile island that satisfies all types of tourists, from the sightseer and the nature lover to the party-goer and the laid back tourist. To get a taste of the island, we suggest taking a stroll in Naxos Town (Chora) through the winding alleyways to admire the whitewashed houses, with their potted flowers, and colourful doors and shutters. It is truly a calming and rejuvenating experience. Town (Chora) possesses several of the island's most characteristic sites, such as the Portara (the marble gate to the ancient Temple of Apollo), the Venetian Castle, the Mycenean City in the Grotta area, the Archaeological Museum, the 16th century Bazeos Castle, and the Churches of Zoodochou Pigis and Panagia Myrtidiotissa. While touring Naxos Island , you can visit many other significant archaeological and historical sites. In Apirathos, you should stop to admire the Zevgoli Tower and the Museums. If you are an archaeology buff, then we recommend visiting the Kouroi in Apollonas and Flerio, the Ancient Site of Iria and the Sanctuary of Demetra and Apollo near Sagri.

Naxos Town is Incredible! ❤️Travel Guide + Ancient Ruins. What to do in Naxos, Greece
We spend a day exploring the town of Naxos (Chora) to find out the best things to do!
We started right by our hotel Kalergis Studio ( which is situated directly on Agios Georgios Beach directly in town.
It was really windy there so we quickly headed into town to explore the cute streets. Naxos is full of smaller alleys with white washed buildings and colourful doors. We found ourselves in the main town square, home to a great Gyro restaurant called Gyro, Gyro so we stopped for some lunch. We got one chicken and one pork gyro, both were delicious.
After we ate we did a bit of shopping (Instagram hat!) and made our way down to the port to explore the boardwalk area which is lined with restaurants and cafes, you’ll also find loads of boats there as well as the ferry dock.
We then headed to what remains of the Apollo Temple (Portara)- it used to be a full temple but now all that remains is a very large doorway. The temple dates back to 500 BC. The temple is on a separate island but is connected by a walkway to the town.
After the temple we made our way through the small, narrow streets up to the castle, where we found a cafe with a great view of the town.
Lastly we finished up our day by grabbing some delicious ice cream at the Waffle House.
Athens Vlog:
Naxos Town:
The capital of Naxos (called Naxos Town or Chora) includes the island’s main port. Due to its position, it offers a variety of landscapes, which is quite unique for a Cycladic island town. Its proximity to the sea combined with the large number of tourist attractions and amenities make Naxos Town the most preferable place to be on the island.
As the ferry approaches the port, Portara immediately catches the traveler’s eye. Portara is actually the Greek word for “big door”. It is an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo. This is where, according to Greek mythology, Dionysus met Ariadne. Portara was built on a small rocky peninsula called Palatia. Portara and Palatia are a favourite afternoon walk for all those who love the view of an unforgettable sunset.
With a population of approximately 2000 people, Naxos Town is quite busy all year round. However, it becomes even more crowded towards the end of spring (starting as early as mid May) and throughout the summer (right to the end of September). Unlike other areas of the island, on Naxos Town, many bars, café, tavernas and restaurants are open all year round.
Closest and nicest beach on Naxos Town is the beach of Saint George (Agios Georgios in Greek). It is usually a crowded beach with lovely tavernas literally on the sand and many bar-café to enjoy breakfast or a late evening drink. You will find umbrellas and sunbeds in the largest part of the beach as well as a famous sports club towards its end, where you can enjoy your favorite sports or take surfing lessons. The beach iof Saint George is perhaps the most popular on the island of Naxos, ideal for people who are not strong swimmers and for families with young children.
Naxos:
Naxos is an island in Greece, with 429 square kilometres the biggest of the Cyclades group. It's located right in the centre of the Aegean Sea. Roughly 20,000 people live on the island and it's a popular tourist destination, including some fine beaches and ancient ruins as well.
Naxos has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny and dry summers and mild but wetter winters. Summers from June to September average around 25-27 degrees Celsius during the day and still above 20 degrees at night. The influence of the sea means that it never feels oppressively hot and nights are kept nice and warm as well.

GREECE: WATCHING SPECTACULAR SUNSET from 6th CENTURY BC temple, ISLAND of NAXOS????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful and very historic Greek island of Naxos and let's enjoy watching, not the sunset, but, the crowds enjoying the sunset from a 6th century BC temple, the temple of Apollo.
Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
