Porto Santo Island

If there are places that seem to have come from out of a dream, Porto Santo is undoubtedly one of them. Porto Santo is the smallest inhabited island of the archipelago, with an area of 42 km2, only 11 kilometers long and only 6 kilometers wide. This little paradise is located just 50 km away from Madeira, with a long and gorgeous golden beach covering nearly the entire southern coast of this fascinating island. PT// Na pequena ilha do Porto Santo, o Miradouro da Portela tem uma vista deslumbrante sobre a ilha. Daqui é visível todo o areal que lhe dá o nome de ilha dourada, assim como os ilhéus que fazem parte do arquipélago. Nos dias claros, conseguimos observar a Ilha da Madeira ao longe.
Do outro lado do miradouro, conseguimos ver a costa este da ilha com o Pico Branco, o Pico da Terra Chã e o Porto de Abrigo. Situa-se a 1,6 Km da cidade.
Na mesma paragem podemos visitar os Moinhos de Vento, que se mantém intactos desde sempre e onde se produzia farinha para os navios que iam para a América.

EN// On the small island of Porto Santo, the Miradouro da Portela has a breathtaking view over the island. From here you can see the 9km beach, that gives it the name of golden island, as well as the ilheus that are part of the archipelago. On clear days, we could observe the Island of Madeira, in the distance.
On the other side of the viewpoint, you can see the east coast of the island with the Pico Branco, the Pico da Terra Chã and the Porto de Abrigo. It is located 1.6 km from the city.
At the same stop we can visit the windmills, which have remained intact ever since and where flour was produced for the ships that went to America.

Porto Santo Island

The white sands, the long shore and the warm and crystalline waters are not Porto Santo’s only charming attractions. This holidaymakers’ paradise is also coveted for the countless therapeutic properties of its sands and waters, which combine in various forms of treatments.

50 km northeast of Madeira lies the island of Porto Santo, a 10 minute plane flight away from Madeira airport, 20 minutes by helicopter, or 2¼ hours by boat.

On this still not very populated island, there is a most magnificent beach, bathed by a tepid, shimmering blue sea. The 9 km of fine golden sand make it a paradise for holidaymakers, especially families.

Porto Santo Pico Branco und Terra Chã Wanderung Juni 2019

Ein Ziel der diesjährigen Reise ist eine Wanderung zum Pico Branco, dem zweithöchsten Berg von Porto Santo, und der Terra Chã. Er erhielt seinen Namen von der weißen Steinsäule, bei der früher die weiße Färberflechte in großen Mengen wuchs. Für
cirka 14 Euro bringt uns ein Taxi in den Norden der Insel zum Parkplatz an der Regionalstraße ER111. Der Weg wurde ursprünglich für die Eselskarren angelegt, die von den einheimischen zur Aussaat von Gerste im Terra Chã benötigt wurden. Weiter führt der Pfad vorbei an gewaltigen prismatischen Trachytformation, in die der Weg selbst gehauen wurde. Die ersten 1,2 km schmiegt sich der Weg in die Süd West Flanke des Berges und es geht stetig berauf. Nun beginnt die steilste Teilstrecke
mit teilweise in Serpentinen form angelegten Stteinstufen. Der Weg ist ansteigend und sehr steil, führt durch ein trockenes, raues Gelände und besteht aus fantastischen Felsformationen, welche sich mit der typischen Fauna und Flora vermischen. Das Gebiet des Pico Branco und Terra Chã bietet Lebensraum für viele endemische Pflanzen- und Tierarten besonders für die an Land ansässigen Weichtiere oder Schnecken. Von den unzähligen Aussichtspunkten, die der Wanderpfad bietet, kann man einen Großteil der Insel Porto Santo überblicken: Serra de Dentro, Pico do Concelho, Pico Ana Ferreira, Calheta, Ilhéu de Baixo, die Stadt Vila Baleira und einen Teil des Strandes. Der Betrachter bekommt eine andere Vorstellung von der “Ilha Dourada” (die goldene Insel) - mehr als nur den langen Sandstrand. Zum ersten mal blickt man auf die Ostseite der Insel und beginnt zu ahnen, dass man ab hier schwindelfrei sein muss. Nun gelangt man an eine Weggabelung, die links zum Pico Branco und nach rechts zur Terra Chã (flaches Land) führt, die hier langsam vom magmatischen Ergusskern des Pico Branco abbricht. Die Wanderung dauert je nach Länge der Pausen und Fotostopps zirka 1,5-2 Stunden. Entlang des Weges gibt es keinerlei Einrichtungen, Wasser oder Quellen. Das kleine Steinhaus bietet Unterschlupf bei Schlechtwetter. Am Horizont erblickt man Madeira. Obwohl von vielen Veranstaltern eine geführte Wanderung angeboten wird, haben sich in den letzen drei Reisen nie genügend Teilnehmer zusammengefunden. Die grandiosen Ausblicke entschädigen jedoch für die nicht erhaltenen

Porto Santo’s greatest attraction is without doubt its long sandy golden beach, stretching over nine kilometres from Vila Baleira to Ponta de Calheta.
The water, warmed by Gulf Stream currents, and the mild weather is increasingly attracting foreign visitors too. But the ample space means you won’t find shoulder-to-shoulder sunbathers as in so many other European resorts.
The soft sands are said to have healing properties for ailments as diverse as rheumatism, rickets and varicose veins, and from time to time you’ll see people buried up to their necks.

A grande atracção no Porto Santo, é sem dúvidas a longa praia de areia dourada, estendida ao longo de nove quilómetros desde a Vila Baleira até à Ponta da Calheta.
A água, aquecida pelas correntes do Golfo e as temperaturas amenas são também atracções acrescidas aos visitantes estrangeiros. No entanto este amplo espaço, não significa que esteja apinhada com banhistas como em muitos outros resorts europeus.
Diz-se que as suaves areias têm propriedades terapêuticas para reumatismo e varizes, por isso de tempos em tempos há-de ver pessoas enterradas na areia até ao pescoço.

Miradouro da Portela, ilha do Porto Santo

O Miradouro da Portela apresenta um maravilhoso panorama sobre a Ilha de Porto Santo, situado a Este da cidade. A cerca de 1,5km de Vila Baleira, permite uma agradável viagem numa avenida rodeada de palmeiras e moinhos de vento, outrora utilizados para moer o trigo e outros cereais. No caminho para o Miradouro, está situada a Capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça, datada de 1851. As suas coordenadas são 33° 4' 0.42 N 16° 19' 3.86 W .

The Portela viewpoint presents a wonderful panorama over the island of Porto Santo, located east of the city. Situated about 1.5 km from Vila Baleira, allows a pleasant trip on the freeway surrounded by palm trees and windmills, once used to grind wheat and other cereals. On the way to the Belvedere, is situated in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça, dated 1851. 33° 4' 0.42 N 16° 19' 3.86 W .

Die Regeln der Gewalt Portela stellt eine wunderbare Aussicht auf die Insel Porto Santo, östlich der Stadt. Auf etwa 1,5 km von Vila Baleira ermöglicht eine gute Reise auf der Autobahn, von Palmen und Windmühlen, einst Weizen und anderen Getreidesorten mahlen umgeben. Auf dem Weg zum Belvedere, ist in der Kapelle der Nossa Senhora da Graça, datiert 1851 gelegen. 33° 4' 0.42 N 16° 19' 3.86 W .

PT// Desde a Estrada Regional, logo depois da Serra de Dentro encontramos a subida para o trilho PS PR1 Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã, de 2.7 km.
Uma caminhada de mais ou menos uma hora e meia, sempre a subir, com inúmeros miradouros naturais que permitem vislumbrar grande parte da ilha do Porto Santo: calhau da Serra de Dentro, Pico do Concelho, Ilhéu de Cima, Pico do Maçarico, Portela, Rocha de Nossa Senhora, a cidade, parte da praia, Pico Ana Ferreira, Espigão dos Morenos, a Calheta e o Ilhéu de Baixo.
Nota-se o contraste entre a Montanha e o Mar, com vistas brutais, ideal para um passeio a dois e para fugir da praia.
O regresso faz-se pelo mesmo caminho.

We can observe the contrast between the Mountain and the Sea, with brutal views, ideal for a walk for two and to escape from the beach.
