Porth Yr Ogof - Brecon Beacons, South Wales
My brother and I at the Ystradfellte waterfalls, Brecon Beacons. As usual a pretty awful December day...
Why You Must Visit The Brecon Beacons, The Four Waterfalls Trail - Places To See In Wales Ep 3
Waterfall country in the beautifully rugged landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park, South Wales. Here’s another ‘can’t miss’ destination when you visit Wales, the Four Waterfalls trail near the village of Ystradfellte, Aberdare.
Chasing waterfalls - starting from the car park (£4) - look for either Cwm Porth car park or Four Falls Waterfall Hike Car Park 2 the trail takes you past 4 beautiful waterfalls and also an entrance to cave.
I incorrectly thought the trail was about 3 to 4 miles but it is actually 5.5 miles and even a bit longer if you explore the banks alongside the #waterfalls.
The trail leads to Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd-yr-Eira on the River Mellte in the heart of waterfall country. I started at the waterfall which is furthest away, Sgwd-yr-Eira and worked backwards.
The four waterfalls:
1:50 Sgwd-yr-Eira
2:43 Sgwd y Pannwr
3:16 Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn
4:50 Sgwd Clun-Gwyn
As you can see the Welsh word for waterfall is sgwd.
The area is also popular with cavers, the car park is above the entrance to the Porth yr Ogof cave system where the Afon Mellte enter Wales's largest cave entrance.
This is episode 3 of our series Places To See In Wales where we explore a range of places from the well known to the unusual, but all worth a trip when you #VisitWales

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.

Caving in the Brecon Beacons - Wales
So, we went for a caving trip with Wales Outdoors and you can see the day in all of its glory here...
The full day of caving at Eglwys Faen, which roughly translated means stone church, is a lovely relaxed session and as you can see from the video we managed to get around all of the accessible passages, just avoiding those that appeared propped up and so unstable...
The large entrance chamber is reached after a walk of about twenty minutes along the escarpment edge of Llangattock hillside. This is the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve and gorgeous it is too. Once inside we had a look at the ancient graffiti and mused on the catholics who purportedly worshipped in this space and thus avoided the wrath of the protestants... this was during the reformation, not a few years ago :)
It's the crawls and stoops and shimmy's that make up a great caving day and Eglwys Faen has it all. There is even a fixed ladder and chain to help get you up, and down, one of the trickier and wetter sections. We even saw a good few lesser horseshoe bats, taking care to move quickly past them and trying not to disturb their environment too much. We all had thoughts of smearing one of these lovely, sleeping creatures to the roof of the cave but fortunately our vigilance paid off and the bat population was not effected by our visit.
And our exit at the end of the day was to glorious hail, then sunshine, then a rainbow... What more could we have asked for. A petting farm on the way back to the cars? Well yes, there were pigs and chickens and a donkey, all happy to have thier noses and heads scratched.
Happy Days :)

The secret hidden cave hidden behind a waterfall in the Brecon Beacons, Wales
The secret hidden cave behind the waterfall. It can only be accessed when the river is in low flow or else it would be flooded. Found a new area inside that I'd not expored before so that was really cool to find. A hidden gem in the Brecon Beacons.

Ystradfellte Waterfall Walk - Wales
Sgwd-yr-Eira -- A near vertical trail with steps of boulders, ledges, and logs took us nearly 200 feet down into the Hepste River at the base of the famous Sgwd-yr-Eira, the waterfall of snow. The trail follows a wide ledge behind the waterfall. It is wide enough to have been used in the past to drive sheep from one side of the rive to the other. We think that this is the ultimate negative ions experience... standing behind the falls as the water pounds endlessly on the rocks next to your feet. This is clearly a place to find flow, or as the younger set says it, to get into the zone. A great place for poets, lovers, and anyone who enjoys nature at its best.
