Invasion at Porthcurno
Porthcurno, a small sandy cove on the rugged south Cornish coast famed for the open air Minack Theatre, was one of the most heavily defended areas of the UK in 1940-41. Using historical sources this video book looks at why this remote part of Cornwall was designated a Class A Vulnerable Point, the defences that were put in place and what remains of them today.
If you are able to provide any more detail on the defences of Porthcurno, or had relatives who built them, served in them, or even demolished some of them, or you have wartime photographs of the defences or their personnel, please leave a comment.

This video was made to honour all who served to preserve our freedom. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum seen in the video, and a walk along the many public footpaths that criss-cross the valley and surrounding cliffs enabling you to visit some of the defences featured here. Many are on National Trust owned land. Safety is of paramount importance near the cliffs and beware of tides if walking on the beach.

A Walk Around The Minack Theatre, Porthcurno, Cornwall, England
The theatre was the brainchild of Rowena Cade (2 August 1893 – 1983), older sister of the feminist Katharine Burdekin, who moved to Cornwall after the First World War and built a house for herself and her mother on land at Minack Point for £100. In 1929, a local village group of players had staged Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in a nearby meadow at Crean, repeating the production the next year. They decided that their next production would be The Tempest and Miss Cade offered the garden of her house as a suitable location, as it was beside the sea. Miss Cade and her gardener, Billy Rawlings, made a terrace and rough seating, hauling materials down from the house or up via the winding path from the beach below. In 1932, The Tempest was performed with the sea as a dramatic backdrop, to great success. Miss Cade resolved to improve the theatre, working over the course of the winter months each year throughout her life (with the help of Billy Rawlings and Charles Angove) so that others might perform each summer.[3]
In 1944, the theatre was used as a location for the Gainsborough Studios film Love Story, starring Stewart Granger and Margaret Lockwood but inclement weather forced them to retreat to a studio mock-up. In 1955, the first dressing rooms were built. In the 1970s, the theatre was managed by Lawrence Shove. Since 1976 the theatre has been registered as a Charitable Trust and is now run by a local management team. Rowena Cade died on 26 March 1983, at the age of 89.
Nowadays, the theatre is used from Easter to September for a full summer season of 20 plays, produced by companies from all over the UK and visiting companies from the USA. The theatre is open for visitors throughout the rest of the year. The 75th anniversary of Minack was celebrated with a production of The Tempest in August 2007, directed by Simon Taylor and performed by the Winchester College Players.

Porthcurno (Cornish: Porthkornow, meaning Port (or Bay) of Cornwall) is a small village covering a small valley and beach on the south coast of Cornwall, England in the United Kingdom. It is the main settlement in a civil and an ecclesiastical parish, both named St Levan, which comprise Porthcurno, diminutive St Levan itself, Trethewey and Treen.
It is centred 6.6 miles (10.6 km) west of the railway, market and resort town of Penzance and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from Land's End, the most westerly point of the English mainland. Road access is via the north end of the valley along a long cul-de-sac with short branches off the B3283 and land traditionally associated with the village, including its beach, is on the South West Coast Path
I traveled here with my friends, and had a great day. It was very sunny which meant my drone footage had more potential. The sea was the perfect temperature and was the first time i went in the sea this year. I hope you enjoy this video i made!

Porthcurno is one of the most beautiful spots in the country to photograph, a place that fills you with calm, and most importantly, inspiration. I had plans to shoot elsewhere for sunrise, but couldn't resist having a morning stroll up the cliffs to photograph Porthcurno beach.
I also met a cheeky little visitor on top of the cliffs too.
