Since the earliest times there have been gardens, not where food is grown but flower gardens that were purely aesthetic. Just to make people feel good. Appreciate beauty. Relax and just go for a stroll and that's what Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is.
Portland City Walk
A walk through Portland City.
Portland offers a range of activities including fantastic beaches, fishing, whale watching, tours of aboriginal sites, shopping, history and botanical gardens. It is in the far west of the state, almost in South Australia.
Portland is a busy city in Victoria, Australia, and is the oldest European settlement in the state. Portland was named in 1800 by a British navigator James Grant, who sailed in the Lady Nelson along the Victorian coast. He named it in honour of His Grace the Duke of Portland. The bay at Portland, is the only deep sea port between Adelaide and Melbourne, and offers a sheltered anchorage against the wild weather of Bass Strait.
In the early 19th century, whalers & sealers were working the rough waters of Bass Strait, and Portland Bay gave shelter and fresh water. This enabled them to establish the first white settlement in the area and consequently the state.
In 1834, Edward Henty and his family, who had migrated from England to Western Australia in 1829, and then moved to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), ferried some of their stock across the Strait in search of the fine grazing land of the Victorian Western District.
They arrived at Portland Bay on 19 November 1834. Edward Henty (only 24 years old) in early in December, cultivated the land using a plough he had made by himself. He was the first white man to turn a soil in Victoria. In a short time houses were erected and fences put up.
One of our favourite buildings was Portland’s Rocket Shed. We were not really sure why, but it was one we could go in and look around it. It was built in 1886 and was the store house for the rocket rescue equipment used by the volunteer rocket crews who attended ship rescues in the region.
The waters at Portland, Portland Bay, have had 20 shipwrecks over the years. They are very deep waters and often cruise ships from all over the world stop here and explore the city.
Portland has its very own tram network. It is called a cable tram, but to us it looked like a normal tram now. It is only really used as a tourist tram now, stopping at accommodation locations and stopping around the town over 8 km of tracks strategically positioned tram stops. The tram we saw dated back to 1886 and had a fully enclosed section for the windy days, and a fully outside section for the summer days.
We decided to enjoy and explore the city.
