The Portland Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese garden occupying 9.1 acres, located within Washington Park in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is operated as a private non-profit organization, which leased the site from the city in the early 1960s. Stephen D. Bloom has been the chief executive officer of the Portland Japanese Garden since 2005.

Considered the most authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan, Portland, Oregon's hillside location is filled with 8 different garden environments, Leed Certified buildings, and ponds filled with happy, fat Koi. You can wander the switchback trail up or arrange to take the shuttle.
The Tea House offers traditional Matcha and Sencha tea service with local treats created by bakers in the area.
Take the light rail to the park from downtown and the free park shuttle to immerse in the Japanese landscape and enjoy the tea house. The Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum and International Rose Gareden are all part of the park.

The 5.5 acre Japanese Garden is composed of five distinct garden styles. When we enter a Japanese garden, the desired effect is to realize a sense of peace, harmony, and tranquility and to experience the feeling of being a part of nature. In a deep sense, the Japanese garden is a living reflection of the long history and traditional culture of Japan. Influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies, there is always something more in these compositions of stone, water, and plants than meets the eye.
Three of the essential elements used to create a Japanese garden are stone, the bones of the landscape; water, the life-giving force; and plants, the tapestry of the four seasons. Japanese garden designers feel that good stone composition is one of the most important elements in creating a well-designed garden. Secondary elements include pagodas, stone lanterns, water basins, arbors, and bridges. Japanese gardens are asymmetrical in design and reflect nature in idealized form. Traditionally, human scale is maintained throughout so that one always feels part of the environment, not overpowered by it. As Professor Tono wanted to incorporate native trees in our Garden so that it would blend naturally with its environment, some of the plantings here are on a larger scale.

Our Strolling Pond Garden (chisen kaiyu shiki teien) consists of Upper and Lower Ponds connected by an enticing stream.
A Japanese tea garden (cha-niwa or roji) is a place for quiet reflection on the beauty of nature and the art of living in harmony with one another and with all things.
The Natural Garden was created to be an environment that encourages visitors to rest, relax, and reflect on the very essence and brevity of life.
Gardens of raked sand (or gravel) and stone are referred to as karesansui (literally, dry landscape) gardens.

On the territory of Washington Park on the West Hills of Portland, Oregon, USA, is a picturesque part of Japan - Portland Japanese Garden. He is recognized as one of the finest examples of traditional Japanese garden created outside of Japan.
Garden project was designed in 1963 by one of Japan's most famous landscape designers of his time - Professor Takuma Tono. It was created over the next years actively worked hundreds of hands of enthusiastic people, and in 1967 it was opened to the public.
Key elements used to create a traditional garden in Japan - it is water, stones and plants. Good composition of stones - one of the most important elements in the creation of a genuine Japanese garden.

Portland Japanese Garden, Fall Splendor Timelapse
While the City of Portland is vibrant and full of colors, the Portland Japanese Garden takes just a few weeks longer to reach peak color because of its micro-climate.
While the Garden hasn't yet reached these peak colors, we wanted to share a time lapse video from last year as the Garden switched to Fall.
The Portland Japanese Garden is comprised of five unique Japanese garden styles. The Strolling Pond garden is home to “The” Maple Tree, rumored to be one of the most photographed trees in the United States. When you see it in the fall, you understand why!
