Castlerock to Mussenden Temple Coastal Walk
We are at Castlerock Co Antrim up on Northern Ireland's north Atlantic coast. Our family group walk is from the excellent Haye's caravan park, to the magnificent Mussendon Temple perched on the clifftop.
This was not a long walk but you dropped down into a valley and then climbed a series of steps back up the other side. I found this a bit challenging because of my bad hip. Holding a video camera in one hand as I tried to keep my balance did not help! The reward was reaching Mussendon Temple, ( actually the Bishop of Londonderry's library ) and the spectacular views and wonderful bird life to be seen along the way.
Mussenden Temple is located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in County Londonderry. It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland, offering spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.
History of Mussenden Temple
The temple was built in 1785 and forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol (or the Earl Bishop). The temple was built as a summer library and its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. It is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden.
Both the Temple and the surrounding views are among the most photographed scenes in Ireland. Over the years the Temple itself was under danger of being lost to the sea due to the erosion of the cliff which brought Mussenden Temple ever closer to the edge. In 1997 the National Trust then carried out cliff stabilisation work to prevent the loss of this lovely building.

Killyleagh...Where Legends are Born
Purchase the 'Killyleagh...Where Legends are Born' DVD at dupes.tv.
There are few towns in Ireland with a history as rich as Killyleagh.
Situated on the shores of Strangford Lough, it is dominated by its picture postcard Castle that has been occupied by the Hamilton family for more than 400 years.
This broadcast quality DVD, narrated by UTV's Paul Clark, tells the remarkable story of a remarkable town.
Norman conquests, Scottish settlers, the Famine, Lobster fishing on Strangford Lough...it's all here as we recall the heroes from the past including Sir Hans Sloane (founder of the British Museum and inventor of milk chocolate), Rev Edward Hincks (decipherer of the ancient lanquages of the East), and Sir Henry Blackwood (a witness to Nelson's will at Trafalgar).
You will hear from Lt Col Denys Rowan-Hamilton on the Hamilton's and life in a castle, and see rare archive footage of the tanning process at Shrigley and the flax spinning that once made Killyleagh famous as a linen town.
And David Healy recalls his childhood days growing up in Killyleagh in an exclusive interview for this DVD.

Peter Clark - Night Soil Man
In 1976 Peter Clark became the garbage collector and night soil man in Coen. He tells some stories about retrieving the waste and the troubles they had covering it in the summertime. This is a Storylines Q150 digital story. This digital story was made by the State Library of Queensland with funding from the Queensland Government. It is a legacy of the Q150 celebrations in 2009.
The Troubles
The conflict was primarily political and nationalistic, fuelled by historical events. It also had an ethnic or sectarian dimension, although it was not a religious conflict. A key issue was the constitutional status of Northern Ireland. Unionists/loyalists, who are mostly Protestants and have British nationality ( along with the rest of those from Northern Ireland ) , want Northern Ireland to remain within the United Kingdom. Irish nationalists/republicans, who are mostly Catholics, want Northern Ireland to leave the United Kingdom and join a united Ireland. The conflict began during a campaign to end discrimination against the Catholic/nationalist minority by the Protestant/unionist government and police force. This protest campaign was denounced by the government and met with violence by loyalists, both of whom viewed it as a republican stalking horse. Increasing inter-communal violence, and conflict between nationalist youths and police, eventually led to the deployment of British troops. Initially welcomed by Catholic civilians, the army gradually came to be seen as hostile. The emergence of armed paramilitary organisations led to the subsequent warfare over the next three decades.

Mussenden Temple, Downhill
This is a rough edit from some footage taken around the beautiful Mussenden Temple in September 2016. Mussenden Temple is a small circular building located on cliffs near Castlerock in County Londonderry, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland. It was built in 1785 and forms part of the Downhill Demesne. The demesne was formerly part of the estate of Frederick, 4th Earl of Bristol, who served as the Church of Ireland Lord Bishop of Derry from 1768 until 1803. It was Lord Bristol - popularly known as 'the Earl-Bishop' - who had the 'temple' built. Constructed as a library and modelled from the Temple of Vesta in the Forum Romanum in Rome, it is dedicated to the memory of Bishop Lord Bristol's cousin Frideswide Mussenden. Over the years the erosion of the cliff face at Downhill has brought Mussenden Temple ever closer to the edge, and in 1997 The National Trust carried out cliff stabilisation work to prevent the loss of the building.
