Portuguese Settlement of Malacca (Melaka), Malaysia
In 1511 the Portuguese established the first base of European christian trading in Southeast Asia at Malacca in Malaysia. They held a fortress for 130 years until the Dutch captured Melaka in 1641. 500 years later people of Portuguese ancestry still live in Melaka at Ujong Pasir, five km from Malacca City, Malaysia. They are known as the Kristang, a Malaysian ethnic group with mixed Portuguese/Malay and for some possibly Indian or Chinese ancestry. I visit Papa Joes bar to learn more about the Portuguese community and get to hear Papa Joe perform a Fado, a style of song which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal.

We spent one month in Malaysia and Thailand, and we didn't forgot to bring a camera with us... We enjoyed the trip very much, hope we can show, how great our trip was! We we're on low budget, and tried to find the cheapest ways when we could! This was the first time we traveled together and made video series about it, we hope you enjoy it, and will follow us in all the episodes!
We heard that Melaka has a Portugal settlement, and because Joha is half Portuguese it wasn't a question to go there... Was totally different than we expected, but was really special!

PORTUGUESE SETTLEMENT | MALACCA
Went to the Portuguese Settlement, Malacca for a site visit for an architecture project. It was very fun indeed. We interviewed people and learnt everything we can about them. It was very fun hanging out with the people. The bond within their community is strong. Evrything about them is colourful. Nevertheless, their place is slowly being detroyed especially by the Hatten developers, reclaiming lands near their settlement destroying their sea view and their fishing industry. For that part of the story, the whole group was pissed and wish hatten burn in hell for not respecting their neighboring context.
Portuguese Settlement in Malacca
The 16th century Portuguese historian Emanuel Godinho de Erédia, the site of the old city of Malacca was named after the Myrobalans, fruit-bearing trees along the banks of a river called Airlele.
As the first base of European Christian trading kingdom in Southeast Asia, it was surrounded by numerous emerging native Muslim states.
The Malay Malacca Sultanate was a tributary state and ally to Ming Dynasty China.
Early 17th century, the Dutch East India Company began contesting Portuguese power in the East.

If you want to indulge in a seafood feast in Melaka, you’re in luck. In this video we visit the small laneway that runs alongside Madam King’s department store on Jalan Bunga Raya for fresh shellfish and head to the Portuguese Settlement for some super fresh seafood.
The alley off Jalan Bunga Raya is a real local’s spot for fresh shellfish. This is street food eating at its finest. Small wooden stools lined up in low tables where people skewer fresh cockles, clams and sea snails before dousing them in a chilli, peanut and sweet soy sauce. Plates of shellfish are cheap and are simply dunked in boiling water for a few seconds before they’re placed before you. We also sample the sotong kangkung which is a must eat! Water spinach, slices of boiled squid, peanuts, cucumber, sweet soy and sambal make up this mouthwatering dish. It’s delicious!
Our second stop is the Portuguese Settlement. The Portuguese were in control of Melaka in the 1500 and 1600s. The food that is served today is a mix of Portuguese and Malay and features a lot of aromatics such as lemongrass, chilli, galangal, ginger etc. We order a Portuguese baked fish which is butterflied and topped with a thick spicy sauce, garlic butter prawns and some vegetables. We visited the Portuguese Settlement on a Monday night so the atmosphere was lacking a bit. The seafood however was very fresh. It pays to know which stall you’re heading to (there are around 10 stalls) as by waiters from each restaurant will approach you as soon as you arrive. We simply told them we had a reservation at one of the stalls and they moved on pretty quickly. We chose to eat at J & J Corner (Stall 10) as we heard the family catch their own fish to supply the restaurant and have been in business for many years.

Today we spent the day exploring Melaka (or Malacca, we aren't sure the right spelling!)
This is a beautiful and historical city which could probably be done in a day trip from KL. The Portuguese fort, Dutch Square and Chinese area makes this place such a mix of cultures and colours.
We had to try the famous food of the region, so we found a restaurant that served the famous chicken rice balls we had to give them a go, and they were pretty good!
