Portumna Castle - Ireland
A short look at the Portumna Castle outside of Portumna Ireland in County Galway. Portumna Castle is actually a semi-fortified house and was built around 1618. The home was occupied for over 200 years until a fire gutted the house in 1826. The burned out house lay abandoned for decades. More recently conservation work has partly restored the structure and today the ground floor is the open to the public. Conservation work is ongoing. The grounds also have formal gardens and a restored 17th century walled kitchen garden. Legend has it that a child fell out of one of the upper windows and an Irish wolf hound raced over and broke the child's fall. While saving the child, the dog died from its injuries. There is likely truth in the legend as a stone marker was discovered during restoration work near the front entrance of the home with the dog's name Fury. The bones of the dog, were also found during excavations, and are now on display in the castle itself.

Here's a recent video I put together of my visit to Portumna Forest Park in Co. Galway Ireland.
A Winter Wonderland in Portumna
Portumna, Co. Galway last week as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma descended on Ireland. Like much of the country, Portumna was covered in a blanket of snow for a few days and transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland.
