Suzdal, Russia, a jewel in the Golden Ring.
Suzdal is a truly stunning little town a few hours from Moscow. Whilst not easy to get to (if you do it independently) because there is no direct link to Moscow, it really is a must-see when visiting Moscow.
The video starts with me stuck in Moscow because I missed my pre-booked train (I had to return to my hotel to collect my passport as it is impossible to leave a Russian city by train without it).
I finally get to Suzdal on a dull, overcast day and initially didn't know what the fuss was about. By the end of the day I was a convert and just annoyed at myself for missing a train and losing 2 hours in Suzdal.
I have included about a minute of non-commetary clips of some of the sites as well as a couple of observations (the covering of buildings under construction with a painted sheet really struck me as a bit strange).
After Suzdal I move to Vladimir where I only had time to video the quite stunning Assumption Cathedral and finish with a bit of zumba. You get it all in Russia.
The Golden Ring of Russia - Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad
This video is a compilation of clips from a day trip we took to Sergiyev Posad, the closest town to Moscow of the Golden Ring in Russia - this monastery is about a 1 hour train ride from Moscow Yaroslavskiy station, about 75km (45 miles) to the northeast.
Russia's Golden Ring is a ring of towns/cities outside of Moscow which all played a very important role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church - all of these towns have great monasteries, cathedrals and other historical sites dating from as far back as the 12th century!
Sergiyev Posad, known as Zagorsk in the Soviet period, is nowadays an industrial town of around 100,000 inhabitants - tourists flock here, however, for the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, a monastery complex which was started in 1337 by Sergius of Radonezh.
Major sites at the monastery include the Cathedral of the Assumption, which was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1559, with a major burial site right outside of the cathedral housing the tombs of the Godunov family, including Boris who was the leader of Russia at the end of the 16th century. His reign saw Russia descend into the Time of Troubles, the precursor to the 300 year Romanov dynasty and perhaps the single biggest reason for it occurring.
The monastery is small but a nice half-day trip from Moscow - check it out if you can. Hope you enjoy the video!

Pereyaslavl in 2 days. Cities of Russia. Things to do
If you search for the best places in Russia, I recommend you to go to Pereyaslavl.
Today we make a little trip to Pereyaslavl (Переславль -Залесский)
Pereyaslavl is a beautiful, small and ancient city of Russia .
It takes 3 hours to get there by car from Moscow.
The population is less than 40 000.
It was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152.
By the way Moscow also was founded by this man in 1147.
There was another important person in Russian history his name is Peter the Great. He was a Russian tsar in the late 17th century who is best known for his extensive reforms in an attempt to establish Russia as a great nation.
Peter the great lived in Pereyaslavl for a while because at the age of 16 he decided to build boats and found the city with large lake. That’s why you may see savedThe Little Boat of Peter the Great which he built himself.
One of the popular spots of this town is Blue Stone.
During the pagan times people worshipped this stone. Now people make wishes touching this one.
There are plenty of Churches. Some of them are open and they are unremarkable on the outside and very beautiful inside.
We lived on the territory of eco-camping and drank tea from a samovar.
The nature and the Lake Pleshcheyevo are amazing. For people who live in Moscow and in big cities, this town is the best solution to make a trip and have a rest.

Suzdal, Russia
Old Suzdal is one of the towns in the Golden Ring - a group of ancient towns and former capitals of Russia. It looks like a fairytale town with so many medieval buildings located in a relatively small area.

Vladivostok - Moscow (May 17 - June 2, 2016)
Vladivostok to Moscow. --- Trans-Siberian Railway Trip, May 17 to June 2, 2016
Our journey started from Vladivostok. Yul Brynner who stared in The King and I was born here; His statue is in front of the house he was born.
The second stop was Irkutsk. The city's old quarter reminded me the scenes from the movie Doctor Zhivago with it's traditional wooden houses and the old trams. As an admirer of the Decembrists and their women, we visited Volkonsky and Trubestskoy's houses. One could tell the owners lived rather extravagant life during their time in the houses. White Army Admiral Alexander Kolchak's statue stands in front of Znamensky Monastery, at the spot he was executed. The monastery also has tomb of Grigory Shelekhov, who claimed Alaska for Russia, and that of the Decembrist wife Ekaterina Trubetskaya.
From Irkutsk, we reached to Lake Baikal via Listvyanka; The amazing beauty of this Lake has to be seen to believe!
Moving on from Irkutsk, the train stopped at Novosibirsk for about 50 minutes, just enough time to taxi to the city center to see the dramatic Lenin statue with flowing cloak.
The industrial city Yekaterinburg is famous for the Cathedral on the Blood, which was built at the location the last Tsar and his family were murdered. We took a local train and then walked for about 40 minutes, along a beautiful, primeval forest, to get to Ganina Yama, visiting the site the bodies of the Romanov family were secretly disposed of originally.
Next, we stopped at Kazan. Ivan the Terrible conquered the Tatars' capital in 1552. Russia's icon, the St. Basil's Cathedral of Moscow was built to commemorate the capture of Kazan. Like Yekaterinburg, Kazan is a financially well to do city compared with other places we visited along the route.
Another over night train took us to Nizhny Novgorod, which was the first of the six golden ring cities we visited during the trip: Nizhny Novgorod, Vladmir, Suzdal, Rostov-Velikiy, Sergiev Posad and Yaroslavl. Rostov-Velikiy is my favorite. It has an unparalleled view of the Kremlin from lake Nero. We also witnessed a Sunday church parade and a Mass in Rostov. Suzdal stands out as an unspoiled village town. Nizhny and Yaroslavl are actually very large cities, their top attractions are the peaceful and scenic river sides. Vladmire and Sergiev Posad both have some most photogenic scenes.
We saved Moscow for the last. Indeed, Moscow proves to be worthy of the capital of Russia! There are simply too many fascinating things to see! The metro is handy, on top of the fact itself is a bona-fide museum.
We visited many Orthodox churches during the trip. Many have magnificent interior. The choral music were serene, peaceful and simply amazing!
The monuments in the country are many. Don't miss Victory park, and all-Russia exhibition center, both of Moscow. The monuments in these two locations are just awe inspiring!
We took the west bound trains for the journey. The east bound direction is more popular with leisure travelers. We had to change trains in each location mentioned above except Novosibirsk. Long distance tickets were either purchased ahead of time ( or at the time of travel in the station. Mid to late May is the shoulder season, it's relatively easy to get train tickets. Local train tickets were easily bought on site.
Train station in big cities usually has resting room with single/double/dorm types and clean linen, charged by the hour. We stayed in such a resting room in Irkutsk as we got there in the early morning. The room was clean, quite and rather spacious.
In May of 2009, I visited Saint Petersburg. Please see the video for the visit:
