Mexico's main opposition group, The National Action Party, or PAN, believes it is now capable of mounting a real challenge in the country's next presidential election.
Preliminary results on Monday revealed that PAN achieved another first by retaining control of Baja California in the state election ... handing out another humiliating defeat, the third one this year, to President Ernesto Zedillo's party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI.
The PAN has delivered another blow to Mexico's ruling party, the PRI.
In Baja California's state elections Sunday, the conservative opposition party retained the governorship for another six-year term.
President Ernesto Zedillo, a native of Baja California, called PAN winning candidate Hector Teran to congratulate him on his victory in the elections.
Although Monday's results were preliminary, Teran and his followers were already celebrating.

We are declaring victory early. 61 per cent (of votes) have already been counted and the tendency is irreversible, and in that sense I think it was appropriate to declare victory.

With these results the PAN is already gearing up for what would be the most astonishing electoral victory in Mexico in a century: the presidency of the country in the year 2000.
The official party PRI has lost three state gubernatorial elections so far this year, all of them to the PAN.
Teran won with 51 percent of the votes, whereas his PRI rival, Francisco Perez Tejada got only 41 percent.
People gathered outside the PAN headquarters in Baja California to celebrate Teran's victory with dancing and music.
This is the first time in the PRI's 65 years in power that an opposition party retained a major post at the polls.

Andalucía ocupa la tercera posición, por detrás de Madrid y Barcelona, con un total estimado de entre 20.000 y 30.000 viviendas ocupadas y unas 40.000 viviendas vacías.
Entre los motivos principales del crecimiento de la ocupación ilegal en España se encuentran la legislación vigente, el parque de viviendas vacías y la crisis económica.
De hecho, en 2017 se registraron 10.619 delitos y faltas por ocupación de inmuebles, lo que supone un 5,8 por ciento más que el año anterior.
Este estudio refleja que los datos del Ministerio del Interior rompen la tendencia a la baja conseguida en 2016, cuando el número de ocupaciones descendió a 9.998. En total, al Gobierno le constan 55.049 delitos por ocupación de inmuebles en los últimos seis años.
