LaToya Ruby Frazier about her exhibition at Mudam Luxembourg
LaToya Ruby Frazier
27.04 – 22.09.2019
@ Mudam Luxembourg
The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg
Coinciding with May 2019, the European Month of Photography, Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean presents a monographic exhibition for one of the most important photographers of her generation, LaToya Ruby Frazier (*1982). Since the early 2000s this American artist has developed a documentary practice that is both personal and engaged with the social, political, and economic realities of the United States.
Frazier's photographic series The Notion of Family, was developed between 2001 and 2014 around three generations of women – her grandmother, mother and herself – witnessing the decline of her hometown of Braddock, the former steel capital of the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that would subsequently become a ghost town. Based on personal experience, the series makes visible a collective history that is universal in its scope. Frazier has said: Braddock is everywhere.
For her exhibition at Mudam, Frazier presents The Notion of Family with two more recent bodies of work that continue her focus on the working classes and the interaction between personal life and sociopolitical issues. On the Making of Steel Genesis: Sandra Gould Ford (2017) is the outcome of a close collaboration with Sandra Gould Ford, a photographer and writer who was employed in the steel industry of Pittsburgh and who documented life in factories that were closing down. The second series, Et des terrils un arbre s’élèvera (2016-2017), is the result of an ambitious project near Mons, in Borinage Belgium, created in collaboration with former miners and their families.
Biographical note
LaToya Ruby Frazier was born in 1982 in Braddock, Pennsylvania, USA. Her works have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the MAC's in Mons (2017), CAPC in Bordeaux (2016), Carré d'art in Nîmes (2015), Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston (2013). She has participated in international biennials, such as the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), the 8th Busan Biennale (2014) and the 76th Whitney Biennial (2012). Frazier was awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation Award in 2016 and the MacArthur Fellowship in 2015 as well as, the Infinity Award by the International Center of Photography of New York for her book The Notion of Family (Aperture, 2014).

Market place Place d'Armes in Luxembourg, world heritage city
The market on place d'armes in the city centre of Luxembourg is part of the former fort. Of the old fortifications, some 10 percent still exists and is currently on the world heritage list. Before Luxembourg made the list, the government was in charge of ensuring that the monuments were protected. The aim was not to freeze the area in its current state. The area must continue to develop, but this development must not damage the value of the world heritage.
This appears to have been successful and they seem to have struck a balance.

Little Europe: Five Micro-Countries
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Don't blink as we blitz through Europe's tiniest countries: Vatican City, the planet's smallest country, boasts the its biggest church. The fairy-tale princedom of Monaco lures high rollers with its fancy casino and glamorous views. Italy's last independent hill town, San Marino, still looks formidable, as does the castle-guarded principality of Liechtenstein. And amid the rugged beauty of the Pyrenees, tiny Andorra draws shoppers and hikers alike.

WHY PLAY AND SELF-DIRECTED EDUCATION ARE CRUCIAL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR AN EVER-CHANGING FUTURE
Peter Gray, Boston College
WHY PLAY AND SELF-DIRECTED EDUCATION ARE CRUCIAL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR AN EVER-CHANGING FUTURE 27 Sept., Luxembourg
.
A. What Is Self-Directed Education?
Education is the sum of everything a person learns that enables the person to live a satisfying and meaningful life. Most of education for everyone occurs naturally and efficiently outside of formal schooling, through self-directed play, observation, exploration, conversation, and collaboration.
Children come into the world biologically designed to educate themselves. Their curiosity, playfulness, sociability, and willfulness are all shaped by natural selection to serve the function of education.
If we look back far enough, Self-Directed Education is traditional education. Coercive schooling is an historical blip that served societal purposes that are now counterproductive.
B. The Educative Instincts
1. Curiosity—the drive to understand.
2. Playfulness—the drive to practice and create.
3. Sociability—the drive to know what others know and share what you know.
4. Willfulness—the drive to be in charge of one’s own life.
5. Planfulness—the drive to make plans for the future.
C. The Crucial Roles of Play
Definition of play: Play is activity that is (a) self-chosen and self-directed; (b) intrinsically motivated; (c) structured by mental concepts or rules; and (d) imaginative and creative.
How play promotes physical, intellectual, social/moral, and emotional development.
How play leads to passionate interests and careers.
D. Evidence that Self-Directed Education Works
Evidence from observations of hunter-gatherer cultures and other traditional cultures.
My study of the graduates of the Sudbury Valley School.
My study of grown unschoolers.
E. The Optimal Context for Self-Directed Education
Conditions present in hunter-gatherer bands and SVS, but absent in conventional schools.
1. The social expectation (and reality) that education is children’s responsibility.
2. Unlimited freedom to play, explore, and pursue own interests.
3. Opportunity to play with the tools of the culture.
4. Access to a variety of caring adults, who are helpers, not judges.
5. Free age mixing among children and adolescents.
6. Immersion in a stable, moral, caring community.
F. Why the Time is Ripe Now for Self-Directed Education to Take Wings
1. Increased toxicity of coercive schooling.
2. Increased evidence that SDE works.
3. Increased ease of pursuing SDE, as information has become readily available.
4. Fit of SDE with the modern economy. More than ever the economy needs people who have the kinds of traits and skills that are fostered by SDE and suppressed by coercive schooling.
H. Practical Steps Toward Making SDE Available for All: The Mission of ASDE
How social change occurs; reaching the tipping point.
Means of hastening movement toward the tipping point. Normalizing SDE.
Why the change will not occur through reform of current public schools.
Libraries as publicly supported centers for SDE. Our efforts to promote this movement.

Luxembourg Lookbook
After a short 50 minutes flight from London Gatwick, our duly adventures took us to Luxembourg a couple weeks ago, we took a short walk from our hotel towards the Ville Haute where main attractions are located. We sat for dinner at the vibrant and famous Place d'Armes. Then we walked through the nifty streets in and around the area and later at night return to hotel walking and chit-chatting. A detailed vlog of our 48 hours in Luxembourg will be shared on this space soon. For now, let us marvel at my wardrobe for Luxembourg.
Thank you again for being patient with this long pending vlog! Please check out the post here
