Galapagos - Return of the Floreana Baronness to the World Famous Post Office Box
2013 Version of the Baronness Played by Gazella
Check out footage of the original Baroness from the 1930s: A truly one-of-a-kind character, the Baroness would walk around in leather boots, suggestive clothes, a whip and a revolver. She instantly became a huge Galapagos celebrity, charming everyone she met...except for Dr. Ritter and the Wittmers.
Any similarity to Gazella the modern day Baronness and to her dashing videographer Djonn (especially around :40 in the clip) is purely coincidental.

POST OFFICE BAY GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
Since the 19th century, whalers kept a wooden barrel at Post Office Bay, so that mail could be picked up and delivered to their destination by ships on their way home, mainly to Europe and the United States. Cards and letters are still placed in the barrel without any postage. Visitors sift through the letters and cards in order to deliver them by hand.
Due to its relatively flat surface, supply of fresh water as well as plants and animals, Floreana was a favorite stop for whalers and other visitors to the Galapagos. When still known as Charles Island in 1819, the island was set alight as a prank by helmsman Thomas Chappel from the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex. Being the height of the dry season, the fire soon burned out of control. The next day saw the island still burning as the ship sailed for the offshore grounds and after a full day of sailing the fire was still visible on the horizon.[Many years later Thomas Nickerson, who had been a cabin boy on the Essex, returned to Charles Island and found a black wasteland: neither trees, shrubbery, nor grass have since appeared. It is believed the fire contributed to the extinction of some species originally on the island.

Located on the north side of Floreana, the bay is so-named because in 1793 Captain James Colnett installed a wooden barrel which served as an informal post office for sailors passing through, who would take letters with them to their destinations. Today, our visitors continue the tradition by placing unstamped postcards inside the barrel that should reach their destinations for free. It can take weeks, months, even years, not arrive at all, or even arrive before you!
We may also encounter Darwin's finches*, Yellow Warbler and lava lizards. Great snorkeling opportunities with Green Pacific Sea Turtles* as well, this island is best known for its endemic vegetation: Scalesia villosa, Lecocarpus pinnatifidus, and Galapagos milkwort. Snorkelers can practice on the main beach among playful sea lions.

Galapagos by drone: Floreana Island and Post Office Bay
Launching from near the famous mail barrel we fly around Post Office Bay and the NW side of Floreana Island. Check out the crater at 2:57. Max distance from controller is 6100 feet at the turnaround point 7:35. On way back I am not paying attention to altitude and descend to within ~25 feet of the water 8:35 - almost crashed slowly into the ocean! At 10:30 there is a glimpse of sea lions underwater near the swimmers from our ship.
Total flight distance ~20300 ft, max ground speed 35mph.
Shot on a Phantom 3 Advanced.

Galapagos Videos: Post Office Bay
An interesting human behavior story from the Galapagos: Post Office Bay on the Island of Floreana has been serving as an improvised message board for travellers since the 19th century. Ships would periodically stop by and leave messages in the hopes that another ship might pick them up and take them to their intended destination in distant lands.
Today, it's tourists who leave and collect postcards for hand delivery in their home towns across the globe.
Travel to Floreana and the Galapagos was on board EcoVentura's ship, the Letty.
