CURAÇAO - Travel Guide | Around The World
Curaçao is an island in the Caribbean, among the group known as the ABC Islands alongside Aruba and Bonaire. This trio is located near Venezuela, and are considered to be outside the Caribbean's so-called hurricane zone. This means that vacations to the island are rarely disrupted by such tropical storms. Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
One of the most notable things about the island is its culture. This Dutch Caribbean island features building styles you'd find in the Netherlands, but painted in beautiful pastel shades. However, the people of the island have developed a culture, and even a language, of their own. Papiamentu (also spelled Papiamento), is the island's native Creole. Papiamentu is a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. Official spelling has existed for only a few years.
Curacao has a tropical Savannah climate, with little rain and warm temperatures throughout the year. Travelers will enjoy the low humidity and frequent breezes penetrating the heat of the day.
The native language of Curaçao is Papiamentu, which is a richly unique mixture of Portuguese and African languages, Spanish, with some influences from Amerindian languages, English, and Dutch. Most people from the island speak this language in addition to Dutch, English, and Spanish. Almost everyone speaks some English. A few people also speak French, Portuguese or German.
Those who want to travel by air can enter at Curaçao's airport, Hato International Airport (CUR). It is located in Plaza Margareth Abraham, on the North side of the island, not far from the capital of Willemstad.
Cruise ships arrive at Curaçao Mega Pier or the Curaçao Cruise Terminal. From these ports it's just a short journey to many of the island's popular tourist destinations. Travelers can also enjoy nearby shopping at duty-free stores. Larger ships will arrive at the Mega Pier, and smaller ships will dock at the Cruise Terminal.
Sailors can enter at ports in Willemstad which has various marinas at which seafaring travelers can dock their ships.

Queen Emma Bridge (a.k.a The Swinging Old Lady), Willemstad. A floating pontoon bridge that links the Punda (Point Side) and the Otrobanda (Other Side) of the Willemstad across the Sint Annabaai Channel. You get to see the bridge open and close to away marine traffic into St. Anna Bay. (In the event the bridge is open for a prolonged time, there is a ferry service across the channel as well.)
Queen Juliana Bridge, Willemstad. At 185 feet, this is highest bridge in the Caribbean (and one of the tallest bridges in the world.) The bridge overlooks St. Anna Bay as well as Willemstad. Note: The observation platform has been closed to pedestrian traffic.
Local cuisine in Curaçao is a mixture of European, West-Indian and East Asian (particularly Indonesian) flavours. Dutch influences are found in the use of cheeses, bread and seafood, which are also important in Curaçaoan food. Indonesian cuisine, a migrant from Suriname, another of the Netherlands' former colonies, can be found on the island, and explains the widespread availability of Sate and Peanut sauce along with the islands more Caribbean fare. Also, Chinese snacks can be found all over the island serving cheap Chinese food. They cater mostly to locals, but most serve good food.

The City Center of Willemstad Curacao
In this video we walk around in the city center of Willemstad Curacao.
Willemstad is the capital of the autonomous Dutch area of Curacao in the Caribbean. Until October 10, 2010, Willemstad was the capital of the Autonomous Province of the Netherlands Antilles, which ceased to exist on that date.
Willemstad is located on the southwestern part of the main island of Curaçao and has about 125,000 inhabitants.
The city consists of two parts Punda and Otrabanda on each side of St Annabayten which forms the city's natural port of Schottegat. Outside lies the small island of Sint Annabaai. The neighborhoods are connected with the pontoon bridge Queen Emmabrug, but also since 1974 by Queen Julianabrug.
The older district is Punda with historic buildings around the main street Handelskade, such as the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue built in 1732, the Post Office from 1693 which today is a museum, a church built in 1769 and Fort Amsterdam built in 1635.
The slightly younger district is Otrabanda, which has been connected to the pontoon bridge since 1886 and also has a number of historic buildings around the main street Breedestraat. Together, the two parts form the center of Willemstad.
Since the 1960s, tourism has been the main source of income for Willemstad and the airport is called Curaçao International Airport (airport code CUR) located about 12 km from the city center.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Curacao | Dive into the HEART of the Caribbean | Dive Curaçao Vlog
Many refer to the group of islands off the coast of Venezuela - Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao - as the ABC Islands. But often, Aruba and Bonaire eclipse the C, Curaçao. No one is sure how this curious island got its name, but one theory is that it comes from the Portuguese word that means heart, since the island was the center of commerce in the seventeenth century. Although the name has remained, Portuguese is only one of the languages that you will hear on the island of Curacao: Papiamento, Dutch, English and Spanish are the others.
As soon as the plane lands on the islands dry, flat land you will realize that Curacao is not a typical Caribbean island. Dive in for the top 5 reasons that you need to visit this vibrant island, to Feel it for Yourself.
# 1: It's not your typical Caribbean island
Although the history of Curacao has many different European influences, the island has been part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands since it was colonized by the Dutch. You will notice it even before leaving the airport: blue and white porcelain dishes and delicious Dutch snacks are sold throughout the island as souvenirs, and the capital, Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features a recognizable Dutch architecture of gabled roofs and curved eaves.
Curacao has a population of approximately 160,000 inhabitants and a modern infrastructure, including the highest bridge and the largest shipping port in the Caribbean. Many natives of the islands take advantage of their European passport and travel throughout Europe and attend university in Holland if they can. You will also see many Dutch working, living or vacationing on the island.
Like other Caribbean islands, Curacao has a mega cruise terminal, but you won't feel like it's in Disneyland wherever you go. The pier is adjacent to the historic Rif Fort and the Renaissance Mall, which offers cruise ship passengers an easy option to experience the history of Curacao.
# 2: The island is a big party
Any night of the week and at any time of the year, you can find some kind of nightlife in Curacao. Nightlife is one of the best things to do in Curacao, with annual festivals such as Carnival and King's Day among the biggest and funniest.
Music festivals arrive on the island frequently, and many of the beaches such as Mambo Beach that have become popular sunset gathering areas where happy hours are offered at the bars and restaurants including DJs and live music. There are also many discrete lounges and bars, especially in the historic Pietermaai District.
# 3: It has been a gastronomic city of fashion for decades
Curacao has a lot to offer when it comes to your culinary experience. The restaurants on Curacao have a variety of local dishes, but the international cuisine is also well represented on the island.
Dive In & Taste it for Yourself... because eating is an important part of Antillean culture, and it would be a shame if you didn't enjoy it. One of the nicest things about vacation is discovering new dishes from the local kitchen. Lunch is just as important on Curacao as dinner. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries on Curacao, but where is the best place to go? (link at bottom)
# 4: Any type of traveler will love it
Cruises, families of all ages, divers, adventure travelers, couples and groups of friends can find things to do in Curacao, and accommodation offers range from five star resorts to hostels.
There is something for everyone with activities ranging from restaurants to shopping, street parties and beach clubs. In addition, with more 70 pristine dive sites and 40 beautiful beaches on the island, you will have no trouble finding your own personal paradise.
# 5: is the diver's paradise
The fringing reefs of Curaçao are some of the most healthy and bio-diverse in the entire Caribbean region, so it is no surprise that this Dutch Caribbean island is one of the Top 10 dive and vacation destinations in the World. Whether you are a snorkeler, a novice diver or if you have an open water certificate, you will find a perfect dive site for your level.
The Tugboat wreck, as an example, is a dive site located in only five meters of water and is feasible as a diver or snorkeler; You can also do a dive along the wall there and explore an underwater cliff. Other major dive sites include Director's Bay, the Superior Producer, Klein Curaçao, Mushroom Forest and of course, an essential experience needs to be mentioned, The Blue Room. Local favorites are Director’s Bay and Watamula.
Under the water and depending on the time of year, you will see an incredible array of life and colour which will include sea turtles, rays, dolphins, sharks, eels, lionfish and species of fish that are exclusive to Curacao.
Now, dive into the HEART of the Dutch Caribbean, discover Curaçao and Feel it for Yourself!

BEST Things to DO Curacao | Explore Playa Kenepa | Dive Curaçao Vlog
The Kenepa Plantation – Where history merges with nature
A Storied Landhuis
“Echoes of the past now resonate loud and clear where aspirations of freedom were once reduced to hushed tones and secret drumbeats...” wrote Susan Campbell
Welcome to Landhuis Kenepa. This Plantation, located in the western part of Curaçao, is named after the fruits of the Kenepa tree and is a sprawling country estate constructed in 1693. In 2005, its buildings were fully restored by the government’s Monument Foundation. Although it was once one of Curaçao’s largest and wealthiest plantations, producing divi-divi seed-pots and sheepwool, this location is truly best known in the island’s history as the place where the seeds of slave emancipation first took root. Though slavery was not officially abolished on Curaçao until 1863, the road to emancipation began right here at Landhuis Kenepa.
In 2007, a museum displaying rituals, customs, history, and culture from an Afro-Curaçaoan point of view was established at Landhuis Kenepa called Museo Tula. The enlightening permanent and revolving exhibits can be viewed independently or with a guide for groups. Also, on site you will discover a gift shop with local crafts and the Creole Kitchen, a unique café featuring Creole-Caribbean-African cuisine. Guided eco-tours of the surrounding countryside, including a 17th-century garden, are also available.
Playa Kenepa
The Playa Kenepa beaches are two of the most popular beaches located on Curacao. Playa Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip) and Playa Kenepa Chiki (Klein Knip) are regularly visited by both tourists and locals because the natural beauty and serenity that they exude.
Driving from the historic Kenepa Plantation Landhuis you will first encounter Kenepa Chiki, one of the prettiest beaches on the island, which is a small cove with lots of shade and white sand. This is a hidden treasure for beach-goers, snorkelers, and scuba divers alike. With an easy shore entry from the beach, you can head out to the drop-off along the cliffs, where you discover a beautiful abundance of bio-diversity including gorgonians, orange cups corals, schooling fingerlings and some small caves.
Playa Kenepa Grandi (big beach) is a much larger beach further along the road, in an isolated and practically deserted region of the plantation. However, this does not mean that the place is not crowded, especially on weekends, when residents will enjoy this “one of a kind” public beach.
Driving down the barren road from Kenepa Chiki you will first encounter the parking lot and then the water starts to come into sight where you will immediately be awestruck by the intensely vivid turquoise sea that lies beneath the surrounding cliffs. The sun’s rays reflecting off the white sandy sea floor causes the many shades of blues to come to life, enticing you to dive in and immerse yourself into the warmth of these Caribbean waters by enjoying a breath-taking snorkeling or scuba diving experience.
The Kenepa Plantation is the perfect place on Curaçao to get away from it all, to get lost in nature and spend a relaxing day on the beach with an aquatic wonderland just a few foot-steps away, across the sand of these magnificent beaches.
Since both beaches are public, there is no entrance fee required. But there are beach beds and umbrellas available for rent, along with snorkeling gear, transparent kayaks and paddle boards.
