Bacharach, Germany
Day spent in Bacharach and Sankt Goar, Germany on the middle section of the Rhine river. Still don't know how to pronounce the town's name tbh but it was a FAIRYTALE. Climbed to the Postenturm, Burg Stahleck, and Wernerkapelle. Shot with Canon G7 X Mark ii

Bacharach and Cochem, Germany | Travelog Drone Runner | Jan 2020
Short Travelog I filmed while exploring the western side of Germany! Shot on DJI Spark.
We drove from Cologne to a small village in the Rhein Valley called Bacharach, as soon as we got to the village it was like taking a step back in time. We quickly found a park and started a short walk up to Postenturm (observation deck) to get some stunning views of the village nestled in the mountainside next to the Rhein river. Vineyards line the mountainside amongst ruins from the 15th century.
Next stop was Cochem to see the Cochem Castle that sits on a ridge overlooking the small town and the Moselle river. This 11th century Castle has unrivalled panoramic views through the valley.

19 Bacharach
From our 2016 trip to Europe.
Bacharach is a picture-postcard town on the banks of the Rhine. From the park in front of the town, you can see the castle looming above on the left. Several towers in the 14th c. town walls front the town, including the brown stone Marktturm (Market Tower) in the middle, the white Krantenturm to the left (the Crane Tower where barrels of the area’s prized wine were loaded onto ships) and the bright white Münzturm on the right (near the town mint). The park adjoins the Rhein River with views of another town (Lorch) on the opposite bank.
The town’s Catholic church is noteworthy because of the high water marks noted on its walls from various floods over the years. We passed the aforementioned Town Mint (note the Münze sign on the half-timbered building) where Bacharach made its own coins dating back to 1356, a necessity for any great trading town. Other street scenes include a preliminary peak at the spire of St Peter's (more on that later) and another look at the Marktturm.
We stayed in a delightful half-timbered B&B with a flower-bedecked courtyard beside a stream in the shadow of the medieval town walls and towers. We followed the stream to the center of town where we found the medieval St Peter’s Church, the 18th c. post office, and the ruins of the 15th c. Werner Kapelle on a promontory above the town. We actually had dinner at the old post office (now a restaurant) with the Werner Kapelle and the tower of St Peter’s looming above us.
The town’s castle, Burg Stahleck, dates to the 12th century. From the the section of the town walls that extend into the hills above Bacharach, we climbed the Postenturm tower for a nice view of Burg Stahleck, the Werner Kapelle, St Peter’s, and the rest of the town below, including the towers in the town wall along the Rhine. From this same spot, looking inland, you can see the two towers flanking our B&B, while looking further uphill, we see yet another section of the town walls extending through the vineyards (my sister Linda ventured a bit further up the hill than we did).
The video concludes with a series of still photos from our visit.
20 Rhine Cruise
From our 2016 trip to Europe.
We took the KD cruise on the Rhine from Bacharach to Boppard, passing medieval villages and castles.
In the middle of the river stands Burg Pfalz, built in the 1330s to tax medieval boat traffic by raising a chain barrier across the river. Above it in the hills stands Burg Gutenfels (c. 1220) which worked in concert with Burg Pfalz to control the river. The little village below seems ancient until a train zips by.
On the opposite side of the river, the 10th c. Schönburg Castle (with the salmon-colored addition) sits above the charming town of Oberwesel with it's matching salmon-colored Liebfrauenkirche, medieval town walls & towers, and the white 14th c. St Martinskirche.
The steep rock outcropping known as the Lorelei rises 450 feet above the narrowest and deepest point in the Rhein. Unusual sounds are sometimes created by echoes bouncing off the cliff face, and the reefs just upstream from the rock claimed many ships, giving rise to the legend of a maiden who lures sailors to their doom.
Burg Katz sits above a tiny village of pastel colored houses. It combined with the much larger Burg Rheinfels on the opposite shore above the town of St Goar to effectively control river traffic. Burg Rheinfels dates to 1245 and was once the mightiest castle on the Rhine. After enduring 500 years of wars and sieges, the castle was finally destroyed by Napoleon in 1797, leaving the picturesque ruins we see today.
The diminutive Burg Maus with its round tower got its name (the “mouse” castle) in juxtaposition to Burg Katz (the “cat” castle) that we saw earlier.
Burg Liebenstein and Burg Sterrenberg are closer to each other than any other castles on the Rhine. Legend has it that they belonged to two feuding brothers with a wall of separation built between them, although it's more likely that the wall was constructed to help the defenses of both castles. Just beyond the pair of castles is another charming riverside town.
We stopped for lunch in Boppard where we visited the 13th c. St Severus Church and the town's 4th c. Roman ruins, where Pam got her puppy fix.
After lunch, we returned south down the river, enjoying the same towns and castles from a different angle. Along the waterfront in the town of Kaub, we spotted the statue of Napoleon’s nemesis, German General von Blücher, who built the first pontoon bridge of its kind here in 1813 to outflank Napoleon, frustrating Bonapart's attempts to fend off the German and Russian armies who were pursuing him following his disastrous Russian campaign. Two years later, it was again von Blücher who teamed up with Wellington to defeat Napoleon at Waterloo.
At the end of our voyage, it was fun to see all the sights of Bacharach from the river (we had visited Bacharach on foot the day before, as chronicled in the previous video). Panning from right to left, we see the white Münzturm in the foreground, the Postenturm behind it in the vineyards above the town, the tower of St Peter's Church alongside the ruined Werner Kapelle, the Marktturm in the foreground, and Burg Stahleck in the background hovering above the town.
The video ends with several still photos from our day on the Rhine.
