Postojna Cave, Slovenia
The Postojna Cave system is a network of caves over 24km in length cut into the karst rock by the Pikva river. It has been a tourist attraction since 1819 when the Austrian emperor Francis I visited. There has been a railway to visit the caves since the nineteenth century. It is the second longest cave system in Slovenia and I believe the longest cave tourist trail in the world.
In the cave system we can also find olms (also known as proteus (Proteus anguinus)), a fully aquatic salamander. Unlike most amphibians, the olm spends all of its life underwater. Ift is found in the karst cave systems in the Dinaric Alps in what was western Yugoslavia. It was first mentioned in 1689 by the local naturalist Valvasor in his Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, who reported that, after heavy rains, the olms were washed up from the underground waters and were believed by local people to be a cave dragon's offspring. This animal has adapted to living in complete darkness. It is blind but has very good senses of smell and hearing.

Amazing Postojna Cave System - Slovenia
See more details on the blog:
We had the incredible opportunity to go to the Postojna Cave system just an hour by bus or train from Ljubljana, the capital. The Postojna Cave system in slovenia stretches 24km through the limestone. It has been visited by several emperors and was actually blown up in WWII. While you can do the caves as a day tour, we decided to stay the night at the Hotel Jama which is a few meters from the ticket office and cave entrance. Newly remodeled, the hotel was both modern, reasonably priced, and kind of luxurious. The next day we took a guided tour of the cave system seeing the main cave and two additional caves. It was a fascinating tour of an incredible natural place with unique little salamanders that can live a hundred years and go up to ten years without eating. Even if you aren't into caves, this one is amazing. The caverns are huge and the infrastructure is thoroughly though out including an electric train ride into the main complex and back out again. Check out the blog post for specifics.

Postojna Caves , Slovenia in Ultra 4k
Version en français plus bas
From a geological point of view, the cave is several million years old. The first human traces discovered in the cave date back to the Pleistocene glaciation.
The cave of Postojna is a karst network located near the town of Postojna in Slovenia about 50 km southwest of the capital Ljubljana.
The cave of Postojna is a tangle of more than 20 km of caverns and galleries (discovered until today), where in 185 years passed more than 30 million visitors2. Indeed, these are the largest caves of the Carso, as well as the most visited of Europe. In the Pivka river complex, the most famous caves are the Cave of Postumia, the Otok Grotto, the Abisso della Pivka, the Black Cave and the Cavernone della Planina.
A view of the cave.
The caverns are rich in stalagmites and stalactites which form imperceptibly, and whose formation requires thousands of years. The development of these stalagmites and stalactites is due to the influx of water containing calcium carbonate which deposits forming the concretions.
The average temperature of the cave is 10 ° C, which increases slightly in summer and decreases somewhat in winter. On the other hand, the humidity is very high and it is advisable to dress a raincoat for visits.

Ljubljana and Postojna Cave in Slovenia
We didn't know much about Slovenia but it ended up being one of our favourite countries. We loved Ljubljana and spent a couple of days at the library there doing some much needed computer work. Then we headed down to Postojna Cave to take a tour and see baby dragons (olms).

*** POSTOJNA CAVE (Slovene: Postojnska jama) is a 24,340 m. long karst cave system near POSTOJNA, southwestern SLOVENIA. on the PIVKA river.
The cave was first described in the 17th century by the pioneer of study of karst phenomena, JOHANN WEIKHARD VON VALVASOR, although graffiti inside dated to 1213 indicates a much longer history of use. ***

Important to know!
The Slovenian Government intentionally robs tourists!
Beware! There is no clearly indicated place to purchase vignette stickers.
If you fail to get such a sticker, you'll come accross officers with binoculars shortly after the border who watch and punish.
As of 2017 the fine is EUR 150, which is pure income for the Slovenian Government.
We wish Slovenia to invest these funds in clear indications for purchase of stickers and not in binoculars.
