Potato Park (El Parque de La Papa) Introduction Video
El Parque de La Papa (The Potato Park) is an Indigenous Biocultural Heritage Area which aims to protect and preserve the collective biocultural heritage of 6000 villagers from six Quechua communities located in Cusco, Peru (parquedelapapa.org). The Park holds the largest in-situ diversity of potatoes in the world: approximately 1400 varieties. The Potato Park seeks to manage landscapes, ecosystems, biological and cultural assets for the collective benefit of participating communities, and strengthen their resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change.
Guardians of Diversity: International climate exchange in the Potato Park, Peru
In April 2014, indigenous and ethnic minority farmers from Bhutan and China visited the Potato Park in Peru for a learning exchange on how to cope with climate change.
They learned from the many biocultural innovations of the five Potato Park communities, which collectively conserve 1,460 varieties of potato.
The film was produced as part of the SIFOR project (Smallholder Innovation for Resilience) in partnership with Asociacion ANDES (Peru), with funding from the European Union.

Potato Park, as an area of native biocultural heritage recognizes the importance of these goals and shares them, specially the ones bellow:
- To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger: The potato is one of the four pillar of global nutrition. Preserving genetic varieties guarantees that future generations can depend on alternative crops with solid bases.
- To promote the equality of gender and to train women: In Potato Park women can choose other kinds of work, not only in the fields, to generate income and eliminate discrimination, as well as a role in decision making and community organization.

Peru Potato Planting: Chinchero, Peru
In November 2002, I was blessed with being invited to Chinchero to help plant papas. Puma and his family and others all work together to get the job done. The clouds come in with rain and sleet, then they burn some brush to send the clouds and rain away.
For potato farmers in Peru, climate change is local
As leaders gather this week in Copenhagen to debate solutions for climate change, farmers and scientists in Peru are working on ways to adapt to changes in the weather that are affecting their potato crops. Scientists say that the crop can be made more sustainable in the face of less water and higher temperatures.

Peru is the center of origin of potatoes. Actually, in Peru we have the highest diversity of potatoes in the world, more than 4,000 types. Different shapes, different colors, different flavors and also within those potatoes, different genes that may be useful for the new potatoes that are needed under current situation or perhaps in the future decades with climate change.

But, potato also has a number of problems. And some of the problems are already known for centuries, like the case of the potato late blight disease, which caused the famine in Ireland, which is caused by this pathogen, which is part of the environment of potatoes. It has existed for thousands of years as well and is there always. So, we need to continue researching and developing potatoes that are resistant to that particular disease.

It may take years for scientists to determine that one particular plant, one and only one, has the traits or genes needed to resist a new challenge in the environment. So, really a gene bank is like an insurance policy for the future.
