I made this video when I lived in Berlin in Potzdamer Platz and I wanted to make a video to share with my family and friends who couldn't visit what my life was like. I hope you enjoy the tour of the area I called home while I was in Berlin!

named after the Royal city of Potsdam, Potsdamer Platz
marks the place where the old city gate to Potsdam stood.
The square is an important traffic intersection in the centre of Berlin and is one of the most favourable placed among visitors in the city.
The square developed in a little more than a century from a suburban crossroad to one of the busiest intersections in Europe and was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II.
After the war, the area of the square was abandoned during the Cold War, because it was adjacent to the Berlin Wall, but after the reunification of Germany the square was rebuilt to a modern commerce and leisure area.
The modern architecture, shops and restaurants attract many visitors who sometimes miss some interesting historical gems, hidden in plain sight.
The most obvious one is a small remnant of the Berlin Wall that stood here for 28 years, making the destroyed square a no-men’s-land. Visitors can read more information about the history of the wall between the old parts of the wall.
A replica of the 2nd traffic light in Europe reminds the visitors about the importance of the square before WWII
and how busy it was that a traffic light has had to be installed here early as 1924.
Next to the entrance to the underground station, a memorial stands at the site were Karl Liebknecht, member of the Reichstag and co-founder of the Spartacus League, organized a demonstration calling for an end to World War I.
Not far from there, we find the last remaining of the type “BT 6” watchtower, the tower was used for monitoring the border strip as well as the ministries close by. today it is one of the last relics from the GDR era and Thanks to the work of volunteers, you can view the tower up close, climb up and learn more about its story.
Back in the main part of potsdamer platz, incorporated into the modern complex of the Sony-Center, are the remains of Hotel Esplanade. one of the most luxurious and celebrated hotels of the German Capital before it was destroyed in bombing raids of WWII.
And behind it we reach the sony center itself!
The impressive complex opened in the year 2000. And houses Sony's German headquarters.
Drink a large glass of good ‘ol German beer while watching the beautiful complex around you.
Potsdamer platz is also a cultural center. A large I max theatre can be found in sony center and one of my favourite museum in town is here too the “Deutsche Kinemathek” – a museum for film and television displays the history of the German cinema, a must visit place for film geeks like myself ????
On the other side of the square a big theatre is located, this is where the red-carpet events for the important Berlin-Film-Festival are taking place every winter. The Berlinale consider to be one of the most important film festival in the business and attracts many visitors from all over the world.
Right behind the theatre we find the Kulturforum and Philharmonie. The famous concert halls shape in this unique way for ideal acoustics and sound quality. Right next to it, behind the sony-center is the Museum of Musical Instruments.
Not everyone in Berlin is happy with the modern potsdamer platz. Many say the architectural style does not match the rest of the city’s style. And many locals argue it was build for tourist in mind and they have nothing to look for in the ones glories nightlife hub of Berlin. But like in many places in Berlin when you look a little bit closer you find the real beauty.

Walking from Alexanderplatz to Potsdamer Platz, Berlin - Germany 4K Travel Channel
When we arrive at Alexanderplatz, the first spring sunshine awaits us. We watch the life a little, but stay only briefly. On the way to Nikolai quarter we pass the Red City Hall, the seat of the Berlin Senate and the Governing Mayor of Berlin. The back is determined by the Molkenmarkt, the large surface area determines the construction process. To the left is the Local Court of Berlin-Mitte. Right besides, the old town hall which was built as an extension of the city hall. The Nikolaiviertel is to the right.
The Nikolaiviertel is regarded as one of the oldest quarters of Berlin. In the 2nd World War it was destroyed almost completely in bomb raids and street fights. For the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, the quarter was rebuilt. The St. Nicholas' Church with the Wappenbrunnen (foundation fountain) to commemorate the founding of Berlin, give the impression of an idyllic medieval city, although no building is older than 40 years.
The Ephraim-Palais with its extensive gold ornamentation was built by Veitel Heine Ephraim. He was a financier of the wars of Frederick II. By inferior coins he scored high profits, but contributed to a sharp rise in inflation.
During reconstruction, the building was constructed using original parts, 12 m from the original site. Today it is a museum and part of the Berlin City Museum Foundation.
The Mühlendammschleuse combines the original settlements Coelln (the oldest part of the city of Berlin) and Nikolai. Built as dam, it was later rebuilt to mills that grind grain. Later, sawmills were built. In the 16th century the sluiceway was set up. It allows the sailing around of the mills in the Spree. Due to the ever-growing ships and increasing ship traffic the Mühlendammschleuse was built around 1894. Today's double sluice was set up in 1936.
In 1688, the square was created according to plans of Johann Arnold Nering in the middle of Friedrichstadt. Elector Friedrich III., the later King Frederick I settled the French immigrants (huguenots) who had fled before the French revolution, here.

Als wir am Alexanderplatz ankommen, erwartet uns die erste Frühlingssonne. Wir beobachten ein wenig das Leben, halten uns hier aber nur kurz auf. Auf dem Weg zum Nikolaiviertel passieren wir das „Rote Rathaus“, den Sitz des Berliner Senats und des Regierenden Bürgermeisters von Berlin. Die Rückseite wird vom Molkenmarkt bestimmt, der großflächig das Baugeschehen bestimmt. Zur linken Hand befindet sich das Amtsgericht Mitte. Rechts daneben das alte Stadthaus, das als Erweiterung des Rathauses erbaut wurde. Zur rechten Hand befindet sich das Nikolaiviertel, dem wir uns zuwenden.
Das Nikolaiviertel gilt als eines der ältesten Viertel Berlins. Im 2. Weltkrieg wurde es bei Bombenangriffen und Straßenkämpfen fast vollständig zerstört. Erst zur 750-Jahr-Feier Berlins im Jahre 1987 wurde das Viertel wieder aufgebaut. Die Nikolaikirche mit dem Gründungsbrunnen, der an die Gründung Berlins erinnern soll, vermitteln den Eindruck einer idyllischen mittelalterlichen Stadt, obwohl kein Gebäude älter als 40 Jahre ist.
Das Ephraim-Palais mit seiner reichhaltigen Goldverzierung wurde von Veitel Heine Ephraim erbaut. Er war Finanzier der Kriege von Friedrich II. Durch minderwertige Münzen erzielte er hohe Gewinne, trug aber zu einer stark steigenden Inflation bei.
Beim Wiederaufbau wurde das Gebäude, unter Verwendung ursprünglicher Teile, 12 m vom Ursprungsort wieder errichtet. Heute ist es ein Museum und gehört zur Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin.
Die Mühlendammschleuse verbindet die ursprünglichen Siedlungen Cölln (der älteste Stadtteil Berlins) und Nikolai. Damals als Damm gebaut, wurde er später in Mühlen umgebaut, die erst Getreide mahlten. Später wurden auch Sägemühlen errichtet. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde der Schleusenkanal errichtet, der die Umschiffung der Mühlen in der Spree ermöglichte. Um 1894 wurde wegen der größer werdenden Schiffe und des zunehmenden Schiffsverkehrs, die Mühlendammschleuse errichtet. Die heutige Doppelschleuse wurde 1936 errichtet.
Der Gendarmenmarkt gilt als der schönste Platz Berlins. In der Mitte das Konzerthaus und rechts und links der französische und der deutsche Dom. 1688 wurde der Platz nach Plänen von Johann Arnold Nering inmitten von Friedrichstadt angelegt. Kurfürst Friedrich III., der spätere König Friedrich I. siedelte hier die französischen Einwanderer (Hugenotten) an, die vor der französischen Revolution geflohen waren

Arkaden Shopping Center:
The Arkaden shopping mall is 180 metres in length and contains 133 shops and restaurants on three levels giving a total sales floor area of approx. 40,000 square metres, the lowest (basement) level being a food floor; there are also four major hotels, and Europe's largest casino (the Spielbank Berlin). It is also very popular with film fans for its cinemas (including an IMAX cinema and an English-speaking cinema), plus a film academy and a film museum. There is also an 1,750-seater theatre, the Theater am Potsdamer Platz, which doubles up as another cinema (the Berlinale Palast) for two weeks during the Berlin International Film Festival and serves as the principal venue of the festival. This venue sits above a popular night-spot: the Adagio Nightlife, located entirely underground.
The Sony Center:
The Sony Centre, designed by Helmut Jahn, is an eye-catching monolith of glass and steel featuring an enormous tent-like conical roof, its shape reportedly inspired by Mount Fuji in Japan, covering an elliptical central public space up to 102 metres across. Its 26-storey, 103-metre-high Bahn Tower is so named because it houses the corporate headquarters of Deutsche Bahn AG, the German state railway system. The Sony Center contains a mix of shops, restaurants, a conference centre, hotel rooms, luxurious rented suites and condominiums, offices, art and film museums, cinemas, an IMAX theater, a Legoland Discovery Centre, and a Sony Style store.

A Walk Around Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, At Christmas Time
What a wonderful surprise it was to come across unexpectedly to Potsdamer Platz at Christmas Time. The Blue/Violet lighting on the trees was one of my favorite visuals. The Big Tree was very well done. All that was missing was some snow. I would love to go back and see it again sometime. I highly recommend this on your Christmas Touring of Germany.

The Sony Center Berlin at Potsdamer Platz belongs to the most spectacular new buildings in Berlin since the reunification.
The Sony Center is a complex of 7 different buildings, including the DB Tower. From the outside, the center shows a triangular shape, with the DB Tower at the top. Inside is an oval square for public use. Between the buildings you have direct access to the surrounding streets. The square is spanned by a fan-shaped tent roof, which is attached to a steel ring that lies on the surrounding buildings.
The steel construction was built by the Austrian steel construction company Waagner-Biro.
It symbolizes the holy mountain of Mount Fuji which is the residence of the Kami (divinities). The Sony center shall offer the Kami another place of residence in Europe. In this complex, the European headquarters of the Sony Group is housed.
The architect Helmut Jahn tried to unite living, work and entertainment in the building complex. Off the available 132,500 m² of floor surfaces, 68,000 serve as offices, 26,500 as living area and 34,500 as entertainment area with a cinema center, bars and restaurants.
An approval condition from the monument protection authority was the integration of parts of the Hotel Esplanade. The Hotel Esplanade was a center of the social life in Prewar Germany. For this purpose, the former imperial hall was moved 70 m.
In the evenings, the tent is illuminated in different colors, which constantly produces different atmospheres. The illumination is from the Paris light artist Yann Kersalé. The complex architectural forms allow visitors only marvel. One hardly knows where to look first.

Das Sony Center Berlin liegt direkt am Potsdamer Platz und zählt zu den spektakulärsten Neubauten in Berlin seit der Wiedervereinigung.
Das Sony Center ist ein Gebäudekomplex aus 7 unterschiedlichen Gebäuden, zu denen auch der DB Turm zählt. Von außen stellt das Center eine dreieckige Form dar, an deren Spitze sich der DB Tower befindet. Im Inneren befindet sich ein ovaler Platz, der als öffentliches Gelände definiert ist. Zwischen den Gebäuden gibt es einen direkten Zugang zu den umliegenden Straßen. Der Platz ist von einem fächerartigen Zeltdach überspannt, das an einem Stahlring befestigt ist, der auf den umliegenden Gebäuden aufliegt.
Die Stahlkonstruktion wurde vom österreichischen Stahlbauunternehmen Waagner-Biro errichtet.
Es symbolisiert den heiligen Berg Fujisan auf dem die Kami (Gottheiten) wohnen. Das Sony Center soll den Kami einen weiteren Wohnsitz in Europa bieten. In diesem Gebäudekomplex ist auch die Europa Zentrale des Sony Konzerns untergebracht.
Der Architekt Helmut Jahn versuchte in dem Gebäudekomplex Wohnen, Arbeiten und Unterhaltung zu vereinen. Von den 132.500 m² Geschossflächen die zur Verfügung stehen, dienen 68.000 als Büro-, 26.500 als Wohn- und 34.500 als Unterhaltungsflächen für ein Kinozentrum, Bars und Restaurants.
Eine Bauauflage vom Denkmalamt war die Integration von Teilen des Hotel Esplanade. Im Hotel Esplanade spielte sich im Vorkriegsdeutschland das gesellschaftliche Leben ab. Dazu wurde der ehemalige Kaisersaal 70 m verschoben.
In den Abendstunden ist das Zeltdach in unterschiedlichen Farben illuminiert, was ständig andere Stimmungen erzeugt. Die Illumination ist vom Pariser Lichtkünstler Yann Kersalé. Die komplexen architektonische Formen lassen den Besucher nur staunen. Man weiß kaum wohin man den Blick zuerst richten soll.

On our last day in Berlin, we took a tour of the German TV & Film Museum. While there, we also enjoyed hanging out at the Sony Center for a bit, as well as having a coffee at an outdoor cafe in Potsdamer Platz. We ended our day by going to Alexanderplatz as evening fell; did some shopping there, had currywurst for the 1st time. A wonderful way to end our 6 day stay in wonderful Berlin.

To bring together the disjointed city, a large-scale project was initiated after the German reunification to fill in the empty space with large, impressive and modern buildings, housing corporate headquarters, commercial and entertainment venues and upscale apartments. Today, the Potsdamer Platz is a major draw for tourists and a lively hub of Berlin.
Immediately west off Potsdamer Platz begins the Kulturforum, an ensemble of buildings housing cultural institutions built on the outskirts of the former West Berlin, as most of the seats of former cultural institutions of Berlin remained in the East. The buildgins of the Kulturforum represent the various bold styles of architecture of the 1950s and 1960s. The Kulturforum is characterized by its innovative modernist architecture; several buildings are distinguished by the organic designs of Hans Scharoun, and the Neue Nationalgalerie was designed by Mies van der Rohe.

The Berlin Wall at Potsdamer Platz, Berlin. Berlin, Germany’s capital, dates to the 13th century. Reminders of the city's turbulent 20th-century history include its Holocaust memorial and the Berlin Wall's graffitied remains. Divided during the Cold War, its 18th-century Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of reunification. The city's also known for its art scene and modern landmarks like the gold-colored, swoop-roofed Berliner Philharmonie, built in 1963.
Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. It has over 2 millennia of history. Berlin, its capital, is home to art and nightlife scenes, the Brandenburg Gate and many sites relating to WWII. Potsdamer Platz in Berlin is one of the most interesting places. This clip shows the same location between June 1871 and Summer 2018, starting with a Siegessäule en miniature (German French war 1870/71) a view from Café Josty in 1913, Freicorps soldiers at the November Revolution 1918, rightwing soldiers during a military coup 1920 (Kapp Putsch), the destroyed center in Summer 1945, East German protesters on June 17, 1953, the division of Berlin on August 13, 1961 and the first gap in the Berlin Wall on November 12, 1989 and the peaceful present in Summer 2018.
A full scale copy of a wall segment, 3.6 m high promotes the idea of a peaceful transformation troughout the world. It has been travelling around Europe in the past years, inspiring people to leave a message on it. In this clip it is shown in Paris, Gdansk, St. Petersburg, Kiev and Slowjansk.
