vmd news : Sibiu (Part 2)
Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania and was designated the European Capital of Culture for the year 2007, along with the city of Luxembourg. Formerly the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons, the old city of Sibiu was ranked as Europe's 8th most idyllic place to live by Forbes.
The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191, when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time , between 1692 and 1791 and 1849-1865 Sibiu was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania.
What I visited
- The Sibiu Lutheran Cathedral : Was built in the 14th century on the location of another 12th-century church. For three centuries it served as a burial place for the mayors, earls and other personalities from Sibiu. This practice was banned in 1796 but one exception was made in 1803 when baron Samuel von Brukenthal was laid to rest in the crypt.
In 1671 a Slovakian craftsman built an organ to replace the previous one that was built in 1585. Today the newer organ is the largest in the southeastern region of Europe. During the summer, there are concerts every Wednesday night.
În timpul verii, există concerte in fiecare miercuri seara.

Romania Travel Guide - Visiting the Sighisoara Clock Tower
Take a tour of Sighisoara Clock Tower in Sighisoara, Romania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Of all the sights in Sighisoara, the most popular and impressive is the clock tower.
It's an impressive structure, standing over 200 feet tall near the town's central plaza.
The clocktower was built into the thirteenth century and has been through several changes since. The roof was redone in Baroque style after it was damaged in a fire, and in the late 19th century vibrant tiles were added.
The tower's clock features a mechanical display of several different miniature wooden people.
A worthy sight on its own, the Sighisoara Clocktower is also home to a history museum.
Transylvania Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
Transylvania boasts in various extremely beautiful landscapes. Its mountaintops are crowned by castle ruins, in its steep creeks rivers are twisting. In the giant wooden lands caves can be found, while among the alpine snow-capped mountains tarns are awaiting the tourists. Unique sights are the Békás Canyon and the Killer's Lake, which guards the petrified pinewoods. The warm springs feed such spa-resorts as Tusnádfürdő or Szováta. The medieval towns surrounded by towers and walls tell us tales of the past. National costumes, carved Székely-gates and the works of the Korond potters represent the ancient art of the folks living here. A legend or a story belongs to almost every city, every castle, no matter if it is the tall Déva castle, Hunyadvár or Brán, the Castle of Count Dracula.

Cetatea FAGARAS Fortress (Transylvania, Romania)
Enable ENGLISH subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
Fagaras Fortress is located in the town of Fagaras in Transylvania, in the central part of Romania. Built in 1310 on the site of a former 12th century wooden fortress, Fagaras was enlarged between the 15th and 17th centuries and was considered one of the strongest fortifications in Transylvania. The fortress was surrounded by a deep moat which could easily be filled with water. The fortress boasts three floors, five towers and four bastions. Fagaras Fortress functioned mainly as a residence for various princes and their families. Transylvanian Prince Gabriel Bethlen (1613-1629), strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, rebuilt the fortress, bestowing elegance and beauty to the construction. During the rule of Georg Rákóczi (1630-1649), the castle's fortifications were doubled and the moat was enlarged. Ráckózi had the bastions bridged and covered, the moat paved with stones, the bridge and the casemates repaired and a guardhouse built. The entry of Făgăraş Fortress in the property of the Habsburg Empire in 1696 and its transformation into a military garrison was the beginning of a period of decline. Serving military purposes, the castle and fortress of Făgăraş lost their former elegance and splendor. Between 1918 and 1948, the fortress was a Romanian army garrison. From 1918 to 1924, it served as a place of refuge for White Russians who fled the Bolsheviks. Also, after the fall of Poland in 1939, a large number of Poles found refuge in the fortress. Between 1948 and 1960, the fortress was transformed into a communist political prison until 1960 when it was turned into a museum. Fagaras Fortress houses the Museum of Fagaras Country having mixed profile (history, ethnography, art). It includes 20 collections, exhibition of Fagaras representing the evolution of civilization in a string of moments and significant events. Remember by the famous exhibit The Iron Maiden. In recent years, the fortress has been extensively restored, strengthened and equipped with museum inventory, essential being the restoring of the Great Hall of the Throne.

Biserica ”Arătarea Domnului” - Baptism of the Lord Church (Sucevita, Bucovina, Romania)
Enable English subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește!
The Church ”The Baptism of the Lord” is situated immediately to the west of the famous Sucevita Monastery. The ensemble around this church contains the following constructions:
- an exterior, park-like courtyard with a decorative gate and a stone cross (from 1826) to the road, and the bust (from 1991) of Mihai Eminescu
- an interior courtyard with the church ”The Baptism of the Lord” (from 1772), the bell tower (1864), the village cemetery and the burial feast house (the end of the 19th century)
The current church of ”Baptism of the Lord” was built by Archimandrite Joasaf in 1772 on the site of an older church with the same patron. That old church, built by the bishop (future metropolitan) Gheorghe Movila in 1578-1581, was in fact the first church of the Sucevita Monastery. Archaeological research has highlighted the fact that this old church was preceded by a wooden church that probably functioned in the middle of the sixteenth century.
We recall that the church in the courtyard of the Sucevita monastery, dedicated to the Resurrection of the Lord, was also built by Gheorghe Movilă during 1582-1584. It was painted in 1595-1601 by his brother Jeremia Movila, the ruler of Moldavia who brought to the monastery and many other important additions (walls, towers, houses).
The church presents a Moldovan architecture, typical for the 17th century, probably outdated for the 18th century, supporting the rebuilding of the previous church. It resembles the Suceava ”Church of the Ladies”. The massive stone walls are supported by six powerful buttress. On enter in the church through a closed porch, above the door being the writing written in Cyrillic letters. The church served as a chapel for the monks at Sucevita Monastery, and they shortened their way through a breach in the monastery's wall. Since 1832, it has become a parish church. From the locals we hear that there are services in the church only in the days of (great) feast.
