From here we had to remove some branches so we could pass. After we continued to the end of our trail and found a mud bog. With a very little persuasion those of us with lifted Jeeps traversed the obstacle and took some of the grass and mud home hahaha!
Okolehau Trail, Hanalei Kauai Hawaii
Okolehau Trail is referred to as The Puffer. It gains 1250 feet in 2.5 miles. The first 2/3 of a mile the Okolehau Trail is really the remains of an old dirt road. You climb, climb, climb. The footing is generally good unless a good rain came through recently. There are 2 major plateau's on the trail. The first nice overlook
is at 2/3 miles next to the tall powerline pole. At the one mile mark look for this unusual tree that I call Woody. Keep climbing another 5 minutes and you reach the first plateau which is flat and has ti plants on it. You have sweeping views of Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier (South Pacific), the Kilauea Lighthouse, Princeville, the taro fields you left behind, and Bali Hai. The next .25 of a mile is pretty flat then at the 1.5 mile mark it turns steep again and is far more muddy but the reward is ahead.
At the END of the Okolehau Trail is another plateau and you see everything you did before plus the Hanalei River coming out of the mountain valley and a close up view of all the mountains including Wai'ale'ale. In total you see 1/5 of the entire island!
You will find the Okolehau Trail off the main road from Princeville. Go toward Kee Beach on 560 leaving Princeville. Once you get to the bottom of the hill and cross the first one lane bridge take an immediate left by the taro fields. You will go down the road about ½ a mile to a parking lot across from the start of the trail. There are usually plenty of hiking sticks leaning against the bridge.
Don't forget to stop at the Hanalei Overlook on the way back up the hill to see where you climbed.

Kauai Ridge Trail
Back in early January, my girlfriend and I camped on the beaches in Kauai and went on several day hikes around the island. This hike was by far my favorite because of the incredible views of the Kalalau Valley and the Napali coast. However, I am terrified of heights and this trail tested the limits of that fear with narrow trails along exposed cliffs that dropped thousands of feet. You can hear the fear in my voice as I'm trying to get off the narrow trails while Chelsea stops to take another picture. It's an unofficial trail so I won't say exactly where it is but if you do a little bit of research it is easy to find.

Hiking the Kalalau Trail on Kauai Hawaii - P18
The beautiful Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile hike that leads from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach along the cliffs of the famous Na Pali Coast. Na Pali and the Kalalau Valley have scenery so magnificent that their pictures are published worldwide in magazines, calendars and postcards. Hiking to the #1 rated beach in the world is a long trip, but if you want just a small glimpse of the coastal views and lush jungle, there is a shorter option for you. Day hikers can take a short 2-mile hike to Hanakapi'ai Beach or continue on 2 more miles up the valley to Hanakapi'ai Falls. All in all, whether you are backpacking the Kalalau Trail or only doing a short day-hike, this is one trip you are bound to never forget.
Pictures of the dramatic and lush Na Pali Coast stir hikers' wanderlust, but the Kalalau Trail hugging this dramatic coastline also triggers something far less romantic: terror. People have a hard time with some of the dropoffs, says Kathy Valier, a Kauai resident who's written guidebooks on hiking the island. The trail bed is narrow and crumbly, and I've talked with many people who have either fallen off the trail or seen it happen. The footing is twice as treacherous after the island's abundant rainfall turns the track into a greasy slip 'n slide--not amusing when you're edging along a 300-foot cliff that spills straight into a rocky surf. But despite such dangers, tons of locals and visitors continue to make the 11-mile (one way) pilgrimage to Kalalau, one of the world's most paradisical beaches.

Secret Tunnels Hike in Kauai, Hi (Hanalei and Ka'apoko Tunnel Hikes)
Hiked Dec 12, 2015 Hanalei Tunnel and Ka'apoko Tunnel Hikes aka the Secret Tunnel Hike from Kauai Revealed Guidebook Adventure section. Forget the water shoe recommendation. I wore Adidas AX2 trail running shoes and they were perfect Kaua'i hiking shoes for me and worked great in mud and in the tunnel. On the trail wear gloves and be prepared to get scratches all over your legs and arms.
History: Tunnels were blasted by 25 men in 1922-1928 through the rock to divert water from the north shore to sugar plantations in the south as well as one power station. Their goal was to match/surpass the output of Maui sugar plantations. According to 1920's newspaper the men camped up in the mountain during construction and started from each end of the tunnel and met in the middle. They used explosives and laid tracks. Gaging records indicate the tunnels stopped early 1980’s and one source states 1985. According to the State Dept. and Army Corps of Engineers the Hanalei tunnel system had a blockage and the plantations argued who was to pay for the repair, it was never fixed. Blockage appears to be in a ditch after Hanalei tunnel before the dam.
More tunnels? – Ka’apoko on USGS maps has a 3rd and 4th section. Other clips/people show that the third tunnel has collapsed. I intend to return in the summer and trek to the third and fourth tunnels and document it.
BEWARE, this is wilderness and not a real “trail”. Simply this is NOT maintained and this is a dangerous area. Legally its just a general use area where hunting, fishing, and hiking anywhere are allowed by all. People have been attacked by bores, packs of dogs, and even spent the night lost out here, etc. I almost spent the night our here but for getting my Smartphone/GPS app to finally authenticate (which battery was nearly dead). I had to restart my phone and the stupid app suddenly decided to authenticate and would force close. I was able to finally get a signal, authenticate the Revealed Kauai App and find the trail again using it and get back on the trail to my car.
Hike was 11-12 hours total; 1.5 hour breaks and for water filtering for drinking, another 2-3 hours bushwhacking and lost as I ended up hiking back at sunset and it became dark and I lost the trail; I didn't stay very long at Amphitheater falls.
