Canal History in the Powysland Museum

Alan Wilding takes a guided tour of the temporary canal history exhibition in the Powysland Museum, Welshpool in Spring 2015 with renowned canal author and painter Tony Lewery. Tony had loaned many of the artefacts from his private collection and, whilst this temporary exhibition closed in April 2015, the Shrewsbury Museum includes a new tempoary exhibition featuring the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals from January to April 2016. Welshpool library protest

About 500 protesters took a part in a march against moves to move Welshpool's library into the town's museum. Residents took to the streets and walked from the library, in Brook Street, to Powysland Museum where several speakers addressed the huge crowd that turned out in support of the campaign.

Kingdom Of Powys

The '''Kingdom of Powys''' was a Welsh successor state, petty kingdom and principality that emerged during the Middle Ages following the end of Roman rule in Britain. It very roughly covered the top two thirds of the modern county of Powys and part of the West Midlands ( see map ) . More precisely, and based on the Romano-British tribal lands of the Ordovices in the west and the Cornovii in the east, its boundaries originally extended from the Cambrian Mountains in the west to include the modern West Midlands region of England in the east. The fertile river valleys of the Severn and Tern are found here, and this region is referred to in later Welsh literature as the Paradise of Powys.

Alan Wilding looks at the reason for building The Shrewsbury Canal in the 1790s and the cargoes it carried. A temporary canal exhibition in Shrewsbury Museum runs until early April 2016.

The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals

Alan Wilding looks at the Fly-Boats used on the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals after 1835 and quotes from canal skipper Jack Roberts' autobiography about working the canal in the early 1900s. A temporary canal exhibition runs in Shrewsbury Museum until early April 2016.
