Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a popular resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is birthplace of famous freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a barber family. State Govt. has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India's other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.
Matheran has been declared an ecosensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry and can be called a Health Sanatorium in itself. A good collection of the dried plants is deposited in Blatter Herbarium, St. Xavier's College, Bombay, Mumbai. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed. Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. The nearby Lake Charlotte is the main source of Matheran's drinking water. Inside the forest animals like leopard, barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, fox, wild boar, mongoose are found. travel tourism trip trek track tracking

Trek to Prabalgad Fort | Best Trekking Place in India | Trek in Maharashtra
Prabalgad is a hill fort. Prabalgad fort situated in Raigad District of Khalapur Taluka. Height of Prabalgad is 2320 feet i.e. 707 meters above sea level. Prabalgad is an easy trek.
Prabalgad is also known as Muranjan fort currently. Prabalgad was built to keep the watch on the Panvel fort and the Kalyan fort in the north side of the Konkan by the Bahmani Sultanate. In 1458 AD during the capture of Konkan region Malik Ahmed, the prime minister of Ahmednagar kingdom.
After the fall of Bahmani sultanates the fort stayed with the Ahmednagar sultanate. During the end of the Ahmednagar Sultanate, Shahaji Raje moved to Muranjan with his wife Jijabai and son Shivaji Maharaj for long time, after unsuccessfully helping them against the powerful forces that were Mughal Empire and the Adil-shahi family.
Shahaji Raje followed defeat and the agreement of Mahuli, Mughals surrendered this fort with the north Konkan and Prabalgad. Mughals gave authority of Prabalgad to Adilshah of Bijapur.
In 1657 Shivaji Maharaj captured Prabalgad from the Mughals during the estab-lishment of Kalyan - Bhivandi area. During the attack of Shivaji Maharaj, Kesarsingh a Mughal sardar was the governor of the fort he was the only Mughal sardar who gave a strong challenge to Shivaji Maharaj.
'Jauhar' (a tradition in which he / she suicide to get a respectful death) was per-formed by the woman seeing the defeat of Kesar singh. Kesar singh died in the bat-tle in October 1657. During this battle Kesar singh's mother buried herself with her grandchild.
Shivaji Maharaj proved his kindness and let his mother and grandchild go. It is be-lieved that Umaji Naik (a freedom fighter) and his friends made their shelter for a long time in the year 1826. We can see Prabalgad from the Mumbai-Pune express way.
From the top of the fort we can see Kalavanteendurg which is at a height of 2263 feet above the sea level.
We can also see more range of hills which are Matheran (2516 feet), Mhasmal (2339 feet), Malanggad (2595 feet), Nakhind (2311 feet), Navra-Navri (2011 feet), Tavli (2594 feet), Badlapur Hill (2420 feet), Peb fort (1554 feet). In May 1850 Mather-an hill was developed into Matheran hill station by the British collector of Thane, Mr. Hugh Poyntz Malet.
As Prabalgad was a plateau and had enough forest they also thought of making Prabalgad into a hill station but they cancelled this plan because there was no wa-ter on the Prabalgad. Although there is a Dodhani Lake near the Chanderi fort.

Episode 3: When we were on our way back to the hotel after a long day of walking in the woods and entered the market area, Matheran was literally lit. Every hotel had its own light and music and had that cafe vibe all around the place. It felt like we went from a small town and returned to a party house. It was a town party. It was like walking into a small town that celebrates tourists coming in. This was never expected. The time was to fill our bellies with food after a tiring day. A small fight of what to eat and where to eat ended after we found our perfect place with some utterly delicious food. If you are a non veg lover then don't miss this place. You will be delighted. Thank us later!
