The Pragmahal Palace (Mirrored Palace) in Bhuj Little Rann of Kutch Gujarat, India
The ornate Pragmahal Palace, also called the Mirrored Palace and Aina Mahal was built between 1838-1876. Restored after the devastating 8.9 earthquake in 2001, the Palace Harem buildings weren't as lucky, not considered to be of cultural significance.
A small entrance fee to visit the Aina Mahal museum inside the princely palace complex, no video allowed. Marble columns, indigo floor tiles. The resplendent Hall of Mirrors with mirrors on columns, small mirrors, large mirrors, mirrors inlaid into marble, gilt and glitz galore.
I can't even begin to imagine what was lost in the earthquake.

The Old Saraf Bazaar of Bhuj, Gujarat, India
The Bhuj Saraf Bazaar lies inside what remains of the walled city beginning at the front gate of the Pragmahal Palace. Bazaar sections that interest Travels With Sheila the most can basically be divided into three sections: clothes, food, and jewelry.
Brilliantly colored garb is a feast for the eyes in India. Stacks of scarfs. Heavily embroidered, sequined tops. Other than scarfs, everything else looks ridiculous on my western body. Women both veiled and unveiled roamed the streets looking at materials to make saris and shopping for jewelry.
The historic vegetable/fruit/spice market dating from 1883, rebuilt after the devastating 2001 earthquake in Gujarat. And shops selling very expensive ethnic jewelry. Windows filled with gold and heavy, silver worn by the different tribes in Kutch.

Time travel thru Aina Mahal, Bhuj, Kutch, Gujarat
Aina Mahal, or the palace of mirrors was built in the 18th century. It's said that Master craftsman Ramsinh Malam, who trained had learnt his work in Europe for two decades felt that he was not getting work in Kutch according to his skill. So one day he went to the royal court of Rao Lakhpatji, of the jadeja rajput dynasty who commissioned the construction of this palace.
Located on the northeast corner of Hamirsar lake, the palace is centrally located in Bhuj. Malam designed it in a mixed Indo-European style even though it was constructed from all materials available locally. Malam is said to have personally crafted the fountains, mirrors and glasswork, as well as many other wonders of artisanship—a pendulum clock in sync with the Hindu calendar, doors inlaid with gold and ivory.
The king was also said to be a great connoisseur of art. The locals say that he had commissioned artists to paint the famous Mastani. Mastani was the daughter of Bundela Rajput leader Maharaja Chhatrasal (1649-1731) from Bundelkhand province who became the second wife of Peshwa Bajirao I of Pune.
