Take a trip with me to Praia de Faro (Algarve Portugal) also known as Faro Island. In this Portugal Travel Guide we take a leisurely stroll to the beach on Ilha de Faro (Faro Island) and visit Wax Resto Bar
The Ilha de Faro is connected to the mainland via a single road bridge, and this central area is the most developed section of the beach, with bars, restaurants and low rise hotels. There is a road which follows the beach in both directions and is lined with Portuguese holiday homes and smaller beach bars, that eventually leads to deserted beaches at either end of the Ilha de Faro.
The main activities on the Praia de Faro are simply relaxing, toping up the tan, or chilling out in one of the beach bars. For the more active visitors, there is a surf school which provides lessons and hires surf boards.
Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards can also be hired from the “Centro Náutico da Praia de Faro” to explore the water ways of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Swimming in the sea is not a very pleasant activity, as the sea temperature is shockingly cold, only rising to 15ºC during the summer months.
The Praia de Faro is the best beach in the Faro region and is easily accessible from the city, via the regular bus service that also serves the airport (see later in this guide for details of the bus service).
The glorious soft golden sands of the beach extend for 5km, along the entire sea facing side of the Ilha de Faro (Faro Island), while the rear of the island overlooks the lagoons and tidal mud flats of the Ria Formosa national park.
It is hard to believe that this laid-back resort town is less than 5 minutes from Faro airport, and that it’s virtually unknown by foreign tourists!

Praia de Faro, Portugal - first impressions
This is from my first visit to the Praia de Faro, Portugal (Faro's Beach). The beach is accessible by bridge across the Ria Formosa lagoon and there is regular buss service from Faro and Montenegro. Alternatively I simply walked from the Montenegro suburb around the airport, which took a bit of time, maybe around an hour. Which is my only gripe with that town, the airport is on the way to the only walkable access to the beach and one has to go all way around it if wants to reach the sea by foot. Otherwise the sand is very good the weather is very warm for such late time of the year. There are huge seashells lying on the beach and generally the atmosphere is very pleasant and relaxed.

Praia de Faro - Algarve - Portugal
A Praia de Faro, também conhecida por Ilha de Faro, situa-se no concelho de Faro, na Península do Ancão, num areal com vários quilómetros de extensão, que separa a Ria Formosa do Oceano Atlântico. Em 1994, o areal tinha cerca de 10,5 km de comprimento e entre 100 a 300 m de largura, estando sujeito a mutações ao longo dos anos.
O acesso viário a esta praia é feito por uma estreita ponte, construída em 1957, que atravessa bancos de sapal e de vaza e um braço da Ria Formosa. É a única praia da Ria Formosa que tem acesso viário. Em Julho de 2016, foi concluído um passadiço em madeira, pedonal e ciclável, de acesso à Praia de Faro. Durante o verão é possível aceder à praia através de barco, a partir do Cais da Porta Nova (Portas do Mar), de Faro.
Nesta bela praia existe uma grande diversidade de aves e de vegetação dunar. O cenário dominante de dunas e sapal aumenta de forma gradual desde o centro até às extremidades nascente e poente desta praia.
No início do séc. XX, surgiram as primeiras habitações. Atualmente, as edificações de veraneio no centro contrastam com as pitorescas casas em ambas as extremidades do areal.
Do estreito areal do lado da ria, normalmente ocupado por várias embarcações, avista-se a Serra de Monte Figo, o Aeroporto de Faro e a Cidade de Faro.
Um longo passadiço de madeira percorre o cordão dunar até perto da Barrinha, também designada por Barra de S. Luís. Na zona da Barrinha, extremidade nascente da Península do Ancão, a forma das linhas de costa e de ria são constantemente alteradas pela ação do vento e da ondulação. Normalmente, as correntes junto à barra são muito fortes. Do outro lado da barra avista-se a Ilha Deserta e a Ilha da Culatra.
A Ilha de Faro permite uma boa prática de desportos náuticos, como por ex. remo, vela e windsurf.
Esta praia dispõe de estacionamento ordenado, alojamento e restauração, WC e vigilância durante a época balnear. A Ria e a Barrinha não possuem vigilância.
Na Rotunda da Praia de Faro encontra-se uma escultura de um caranguejo violinista (Uca tangeri), também conhecido por bocas, que habita na Ria Formosa. Esta espécie parece estar a tocar violino quando se alimenta, devido ao tamanho de uma das suas pinças ser muito maior do que a outra. Esta escultura é da autoria do artista plástico algarvio Tó Quintas e foi inaugurada em Junho de 2018. É composta sobretudo por ferro, tem 3,60 metros de altura e 7 metros de largura. Os olhos do caranguejo são de vidro para que brilhem e reflitam a luz do sol.

CAMINHO ENTRE FARO E A PRAIA DE FARO | ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
Nem todos conhecem o caminho que se pode fazer a pé do centro da cidade de Faro até a praia. Um percurso fácil, muito tranquilo (até a hora que chega no aeroporto, haha) e com bastante natureza. Já tinha realizado esse trajeto, mas dessa vez tive a companhia do meu amigo Yuri. Aproveitamos um pouco do lado do mar e um pouco do lado da Ria Formosa. Que lugar maravilhoso!
