In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai'i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 78 feet (23.8 m) from trough to crest, at Nazaré. On 28 January 2013, McNamara returned to the spot and successfully surfed a wave that appeared even larger, but is awaiting an official measurement. Then, on October 28, 2013, Carlos Burle surfed another wave that is currently being scrutinized as possibly the largest wave ever ridden. On that same day, female big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira experienced a near-death wipeout, but was rescued after losing consciousness. Such very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. In August 2012, a freak wave killed a 5 year old British girl and her grandfather walking along Salgado Beach.
Big wave surfing is the ultimate celebration of extreme surfing. Challenging deadly waves in harsh weather and ocean conditions takes a very serious approach.
Big wave surfers are not interested in performance. Forget perfect cutbacks, stunning floaters or breathless aerial antics. The profile of a big wave rider is the result of several unparalleled personal characteristics.
Fear is always present in a 50-foot wave. Fear is the best way of managing the risk of paddling for a huge wave face, which doesn't tell you what is going to happen and how it is going to break.
Monster waves tend to move quickly and force surfers to get away of the powerful whitewater. Big waves are lethal even for the most experienced extreme riders. The best big wave surf spots in the world have claimed several lives in the last decades.
Malik Joyeux, Sion Milosky, Moto Watanabe, Mark Foo, Donnie Solomon, Todd Chesser, Dickie Cross and Peter Davi have passed away in extreme surfing conditions. Wipeouts, severe coral reef injuries and drowning are the most common causes of death in big wave surfing.
The pioneers of big wave surfing started to eye impossible killer rides in the 1940's. In the 1960's, waves like Pipeline and Waimea increased the popularity of paddling into new wave heights. Going over the falls was the daily menu.
Laird Hamilton is the first professional big wave surfer. The waterman from Maui defies fast, hollow and high waves with a full-time training and previous preparation. Hamilton, the father of tow-in surfing, takes on the entire big wave spots of the Hawaiian Islands, in helicopter style.
Laird was born with the gene of defying danger. He designs and prepares his own surfboards and wetsuits. Wherever heavy waves break, Hamilton is there to ride them: Mavericks, Cortes Bank, Dungeons.
In 2000, Laird Hamilton surfs what is considered the heaviest wave of all time. The Millennium Wave was ridden in the reef of Teahupoo, in Tahiti, and set a new standard for big wave surfing.
Garrett McNamara is one of the toughest big wave challengers. After riding a spectacular 78-foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal, the Hawaiian waterman entered the Guinness World Records with the biggest wave ever surfed.
The 55 best big wave surfers of all time is an exclusive extreme surfing club. From Jaws to Mavericks, Puerto Escondido, Punta Lobos, Ghost Trees, Belharra, Shipstern Bluff and Todos Santos, Nazare. these riders have set up a new scale in the definition of giant waves. They are:

Conhecemos Nazaré, o farol, a famosa praia do Norte onde existem as ondas gigantes, naquele dia não acompanhamos no site para vermos a previsão das ondas gigantes. Mas de qualquer forma, compensa ir visitar, lugar lindo demais que só pessoalmente terão idéia do que falamos.
Double Trouble - Big Wave & Dramatic Aftermath Sequence #Drone - Nazaré, Portugal
Action starts with Portuguese Professional Big Wave Surfer Alex Botelho paddling into a huge wave in Nazaré, Portugal, during the infamous session of February 16, 2018, which was one of the last Big Wave sessions of a long Winter Season in Praia do Norte.
As Alex attempts to drop a huge wave, he falls off his board in a nasty wipeout, takes a ton of water on his head and loses his surfboard in the process. He manages to come to the surface quickly, but the next wave is already approaching, making it impossible for his team mate and professional Big Wave Surfer Hugo Vau, on the jetski, to pick him up. Alex now has to duck dive this huge wall of water before a rescue attempt is possible.
After the two first waves, Hugo Vau is finally able to rescue Alex with the jetski, and they now rush to the inside zone of Praia do Norte to find Alex’s surfboard. They need it before they can go back to the outside to catch more waves.
The Inside area of Praia do Norte is the most dangerous spot on the beach: waves can be unpredictable and terribly thick, the foamy white water makes it very difficult to manoeuvre the jet skis, and that's where most accidents happen.
When they finally find the surfboard, a rogue wave capsizes the jetski and both Hugo and Alex get dragged in different directions. Hugo finds himself relatively near the jet ski and tries to regain control as fast as he can, another huge wave approaches, and Hugo makes a decision that may have saved his life: he aborts the attempt to jump on the jetski and dives as deep as he can. A wise decision because the next wave breaks directly on top of the jetski and he most probably wouldn’t have survived the impact.
The action continues in the Inside, where Alex tries to regain control of the jet ski and once again things get complicated. At the end, the jetski gets to the sand, and both Hugo and Alex manage to get to dry land, unharmed. Against all odds, the jetski also ends with minor damages.
Praia do Norte is incredibly dangerous at any size. The day this action took place was not the biggest of the season, yet, things can get really threatening, even with the most experienced watermen involved.
Hugo Vau and Alex Botelho are no strangers to Nazaré, they are among the most skilled watermen in the world with many years of experience in Praia do Norte.
Hugo Vau, 40 years old, is one of the first pioneers of Big Wave Surfing in Nazaré. He’s been part of Garrett McNamara’s team since the beginning of Nazaré's first explorations back in 2010. Hugo has been nominated for the WSL Biggest Wave Award several times, and has under his belt some of the biggest waves ever ridden on this beach.
Alex Botelho, 27 years old, is currently the only Portuguese running on the WSL Big Wave Tour, amongst an elite crew that includes the best and most respected big wave surfers worldwide. Recently, Alex has been a standout among the Big Wave international scene, he has successfully paddled some of the most critical waves of the season, across all Continents.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed: 24 meters (78-foot).

The picturesque village of Nazaré got its name from a statue of the Virgin Mary brought to town from Nazareth by a monk in the 4th century.
Today it is Portugal's most famous fishing village, having always drawn visitors to its beach and genuinely colorful life.
Until not too long ago, fishermen were still seen using oxen to pull their brightly painted boats from the ocean and even today many locals still wear their characteristic traditional costumes -- the fishermen have check shirts and trousers, and the women wear several layers of petticoats. The fishing boats are Phoenician in design with bright colors and eyes painted on the vessels, supposedly with the magical power to avert storms.
Church in Sitio High above the town is Sitio, reached by a funicular that climbs 110m (360ft). All of Nazaré can be seen from here.
The Nazare Canyon causes very high breaking waves. This makes Nazare a hotspot for big wave surfing.

The next spot on my journey to discover surf spots in Portugal is located in Nazaré Portugal. On Friday 26th of April I decided to head up to Nazar canyon, because a big swell was about to roll in at Praia do Norte beach. Praia do Norte got put on the world map a couple fo years ago after Garret McNamara caught the biggest wave ever surfed before. This is the first time I film a surf spot without going in to surf myself. Why? Check out the video about surf at Praia do Norte that day and you will understand why. Na Praia do Norte as ondas estiveram de volta hoje Sexta feira 18 de Outubro de 2018 , pela primeira vez no Outono deste ano , algumas imagens da Praia do Norte esta manhã entre as 8,30h ea s 11,30h , temperatura bastante agradável e amena para a época , por volta dos 20º centígrados , pouco vento , as ondas começaram tímidas mas foram crescendo ao longo da manhã , muitos surfistas presentes .

Imagens da multidão que se juntou à espera do surf nesta manhã de Domingo 22 de Dezembro de 2019 , as ondas previstas eram para ser enormes , não foi nada disso que aconteceu , entre as 7,30h e as 15,30h a espera foi longa e o surf até às 15,30 h , quando parti , foi quase inexistente , consegui registar uma onda surfada pouco antes de partir , ondas médias grandes , de manhã o vento estava adverso , a temperatura amena / razoável , alguma neblina .

Images de la foule qui s'est rassemblée en attendant le surf , ce dimanche matin 22 décembre 2019 , les vagues attendues devaient être énormes , ce n'est pas ce qui s'est passé , entre 7h30 et 15h30 l'attente a été longue et le surf jusqu'à 15h30 , quand je suis parti était quasi inexistant , j'ai réussi à enregistrer les images d'une vague de surfée juste avant de partir , grosses moyennes vagues , le matin le vent était défavorable, la température douce / raisonnable , un peu de brouillard .
