Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail East: Prairie Creek to Hawthorne
Seven months after our initial ride on the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail, we returned to complete it. Parking at Prairie Creek Preserve in Rochelle, we biked out to Hawthorne and back in a soggy but colorful landscape, discovering Phifer Flatwoods and Lochloosa Creek along the way, as well as meeting Robert, a dedicated trail volunteer. On the return trip, the rain held off so we connected up to where we ended our last ride, the Prairie Creek Boardwalk in Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, for a 20.8-mile round-trip.

Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail: West
The best way to see the highlights of the North rim of Paynes Prairie is a ride along the western end of the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail. Parking at the La Chua Trail, we rode out to Prairie Creek and back, making stops along the way as well as a trip out to Sweetwater Overlook. It's a surprisingly hilly ride with sharp curves around sinkholes in several spots. Our exploration took an hour, a lot faster to cover 10 miles than if we'd been on foot!

Visiting The Goethe Giant in Goethe State Forest
This trail is a nice place to visit in Goethe State Forest because it leads you back to a large Cypress Tree that is over 900 years old! To find the trail, follow SR 121 east from US 19 or west from CR 336 and look for Cow Creek Road, a dirt road leading north from the pavement at the forest’s western edge. It’s in great shape for passenger vehicles. At the first fork, stay right. Drive around 3 miles north on the dirt road to the parking area on the left. You'll see a trailhead with a sign that says Big Cypress Trail, a kiosk and picnic table. To learn more about this trail follow these links: Cow Creek Tract on this webpage
Natural Burials at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery
This is a short look at the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, where people are buried in shrouds or biodegradable caskets. Headstones are not allowed, and most gravesites are marked by a memorial tree or shrub and an ornamental piece of wood. You can read my blog that I wrote about natural burials at

Kayaking down the Prairie Creek
My friend Linda and I, kayaking down the Prairie Creek just east of Gainesville. The creek is also known as the Potano named after the Potano Indians who lived here from 700 A.D. to 1702 before Spanish Exploration. We put the kayaks in at Kates Fish Camp. Kate's is an Old-time Fish camp Family owned and operated since 1961. Kate's is located at the intersection of Prairie creek and Hawthorne road and is run by Mike and Monica Carter.
