Drew stopped at Prairie Dog Central Railway to take a look at what it takes to take a 100 year old steam engine going!
Prairie Dog Central On The Greater Winnipeg Water District Line! (6/22/19)
To Celebrate 50 years of operation, Prairie Dog Central Railway and the Vintage Locomotive Society ran a special excursion train through winnipeg from their PDC Inkster station/yard off Inkster blvd to Hadashville Manitoba through both CN, CP and GWWD trackage.
For power they used both of their main locomotives, 4138, a former Grand Trunk Western GP9 locomotive as well as a well over 100 year old 4-4-0 A2I class steam locomotive built by Glasgow, Scotland's Dubs & Company in 1882*.
We first see the train approaching after going through the Deacon water treatment plant and crossing the Perimeter highway. it then passes us where I was (which was at Murdock Road).
The train then heads west toward St.Boniface, but stops at CN's X track diamond. we see a train blocking the PDC. A while later the train moves and PDC heads across the diamond towards the GWWD St.Boniface yard by Dawson Rd. It was getting dark and i had to head home for the night so I didn't get to see them entering the yard or head west to the PDC yard.

Fun Fact: PDC 3 and the coaches on this train were all at one point used on the GWWD/Winnipeg Hydro Railway many years ago.

On My Trip Across Canada in 2001 I Visited The Prairie Dog Central Winnipeg, Here Is Some Footage That I Took When I Was There, Its A Superb Railway Well Worth Visiting & Has The Oldest Steam Locomotive Still Running In North America.
Rare Mileage for the Prairie Dog Central! PDC on the GWWD!
This was an unusual movement. The Prairie Dog Central tourist railway was chartered for a special run over the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway. They started from the GWWD's yard in Winnipeg and ran through the city, east toward Hadashville where they had a supper before returning. I chased them from the yard to Deacon's Corner on the edge of Winnipeg.

A Day On The Prairie Dog Central Railway - Heritage Village Picnic Train (July 4th, 2019)
On July 4th, PDC ran a passenger train from their 'Inkster Station' in Winnipeg to Grosse Isle, MB. Take an inside look at what goes on at the PDC before, during and after an excursion
We start off at the quiet yard around 9am where crews are just arriving. we take a look at some of the diesels they had sitting outside.
After a while the locomotive they use for excursions was started up, so I walked over to watch the crew pull the vintage coach cars out of the shop.
After they pull the cars out, the train backs into the station where porters (myself included) helped people get on the train. We left the station about 5 minutes late after making sure everyone was on board and we were off.
After a while we arrived at Grosse Isle. The passengers (and crew) got off and had lunch. The train turned around at the wye track north of the town, and was ready to get everyone on board and head back to Winnipeg.
We actually made a quick stop because either someone accidentally pulled the emergency brake or the air pressure dropped causing the train to have to stop. At the same time the camera I was recording with (Canon Powershot 300HS) died, so I had to record with my iPhone.
After that stop, we continue down to the station to help people off the train. We then see the PDC 4138 pull the coaches away to the north end of the yard to push them into the shed.
We also see PDC 4-4-0 number 3 being pushed into the shed by 5232 and 864. Actually it was all 864. 5232 was off and was being pushed/pulled by the tiny 35 Ton engine.
after that we see the cars being pushed into the west track in the shop, and 4138 shutting off for the day.

On October 22nd, I went out to see the Prairie Dog Central running their weekend excursion train. They used former BNSF 1685, originally Midland Railway of Manitoba Number 2, to run this train along the historic Canadian National Oak Point subdivision, which was abandoned in separate parts from 1992 to 2001.Enjoy!

Prairie Dog Central RailwayTrip & The Great Train Robbery - 2015
On Saturday evening, along with 250 other passengers, I enjoyed a nostalgic trip abroad Canada's oldest regularly scheduled operating vintage steam train, the Prairie Dog Central. We left the Inkster Junction Station on time and sped' along at a blazing speed of 20 kph arriving in the rural community of Grosse Isle 50 minutes later. Just as we pulled into Gross Isle, we were ambushed by a team of horse mounted dastardly train robbers who threatened us within an inch of our lives. Four other robbers armed to the teeth roamed from coach to coach and lightened our wallets. The donations went to the Agape Table soup kitchen.
Following the robbery, we enjoyed a pulled pork bun dinner at the local community hall.
As we pulled into the Inkster Station, we were greeted with a breathtaking sunset... a perfect ending to a blast from the past.

Prairie Dog Central Railway Train crossing Lagimodiere Blvd to Hadashville, Manitoba
The Vintage Locomotive Society (VLS) had its special celebration trip to Hadashville, Manitoba yesterday to celebrate the VLS 50th Anniversary on the Prairie Dog Central Railway. This was a private event exclusive to its members of the VLS and extended families, along with representatives from CN, CPR and GWWD to mark this historical day. This is where we finally got the all clear signal to cross the CN Triple Diamond after 1 hour delay in waiting to cross to start our journey to Hadashville. This was a once in a life time trip we could ever get to experience. My special thanks to those involved that made this trip possible for its members who worked hard and volunteered to preserve the VLS for future generations.
