Phnom Krom Mountain and Temple in Siem Reap
Phnom Krom could be a hill settled concerning twelve kilometers southwest of Siem Reap, and is home to a spectacular Angkorian temple in-built the ninth century, known as Prasat Phnom Krom. Capitol Hill is additionally the simplest spot to catch the sunset within the Siem Reap space, which may be enjoyed from a good looking temple at the highest of the 140-meter-high crown.
The Angkorian temple that towers atop Phnom Krom may be a Hindu temple originally inbuilt the ninth century, throughout the reign of King Yasovarman. The temple has 3 towers, every dedicated to a Hindu god. The southern tower is devoted to Brahma, the central tower to Shiva, and also the northern to Hindu deity.
There area unit several locations to look at the sunset within the Siem Reap and Angkor Wat space, and every one area unit lovely. However, Phnom Krom is out and away the most effective spot as a result of the good views of the Siem Reap country, the reflections of the sun off of the waters of Tonle Sap, the few tourists there to disturb the expertise, and therefore the peaceful sounds of nature.

About :Phnom Krom Mountain and Temple
Phnom Krom is about 12 kilometers southwest of Siem Reap town.
Phnom Krom hill is very rocky; local legend has it that the rocks were exposed by the monkey general Hanuman during a hunt for medicine in the Ramayana epic. The area beyond the temple’s west gate affords a spectacular view of the Tonle Sap lake.
There is an Angkorian temple named Prasat Phnom Krom on top of the hill. It is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
The temple was built at the end of the 9th century, during the reign of King Yasovarman (889 A.D.-910 A.D.)
Oriented toward the east, the hilltop temple is enclosed by a wall built of laterite blocks. Along the walls' top runs a cornice. Gates bisect the walls at each of the four cardinal directions. Just inside the east gate are four small buildings arrayed in a north-south row, possibly formerly used as crematoria. Inside the walls on the north and south sides are three halls, now collapsed.
The temple’s focus is three towers, also in a row running north to south. They sit atop a platform reached by staircases of seven steps. The south tower is dedicated to Brahma, the central to Shiva, and the north to Vishnu. Its layout is identical to Phnom Bokwhich must have been built at the same time.
They were built of sandstone; much of their carving and detail has been lost to erosion including the lintels, in very poor condition, that feature garlands and inward-facing makaras. Octagonal colonettes decorate the doorways.
Phnom Krom is the southernmost of three hilltop temples built in the Angkor region during the reign of Yasovarman. The other two are Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Bok.

Phnom Krom is a hill located about 12 kilometers southwest of Siem Reap, and is home to a spectacular Angkorian temple built in the 9th century, called Prasat Phnom Krom. The hill is also the best spot to catch the sunset in the Siem Reap area, which can be enjoyed from a beautiful pagoda at the top of the 140-meter-high hilltop.
History
The Angkorian temple that towers atop Phnom Krom is a Hindu temple originally built in the 9th century, during the reign of King Yasovarman. The temple has three towers, each dedicated to a Hindu god. The southern tower is dedicated to Brahma, the central tower to Shiva, and the northern to Vishnu.
Eleven hundred years of erosion have significantly weathered the temples. This isn’t surprising considering the building material is sandstone, and the hilltop temples are subject to the constant winds blowing off of nearby Tonle Sap Lake. Unfortunately, this means many of the carvings and detailed designs have been lost forever.
Phnom Krom is actually one of three hilltop temples built during King Yasovarman’s reign in the region. The other two are Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Bok.
Location and Getting There
Phnom Krom is located only 10 kilometers south of the Siem Reap city center. Like most destinations in and around Siem Reap, the most efficient way to travel is by tuk-tuk. Consult with your hotel to obtain a trusted driver, and negotiate around $10 USD roundtrip. Make sure to specify that the rate you agree on includes the return trip.
The drive itself is stunning, with villages, rice fields, and lotus fields to admire. There are plenty of local restaurants along the way, serving delicious and authentic Cambodian fare. Most restaurants have hammocks to relax in after the meal and listen to the peaceful village sounds.
When you arrive at the base of the mountain, if arriving by bicycle or tuk-tuk, be sure to take a tour around it. With few tourists, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a small Cambodian village and really feel like you’re off the beaten path. If the season is right, you’ll find a field of lotus flowers.
Walking Up Phnom Krom Mountain
When you arrive at Phnom Krom, you’ll first need to ascend a long flight of stairs, after which you’ll come to a paved road. This road will lead to the top of the hill and to the temples.
You’ll need to show your Angkor Pass at the checkpoint located after the staircase. This is about the halfway point to the top.
On the walk up, take time to look around at the natural beauty of the area. If you’re lucky, you may see some goats grazing alongside the path. When you arrive at the top, you’ll first see the pagoda. The temple ruins lie at the top of another set of stairs from here.
When to Visit: Sunset
There are many locations to watch the sunset in the Siem Reap and Angkor Wat area, and all are beautiful. However, Phnom Krom is by far the best spot because of the great views of the Siem Reap countryside, the reflections of the sun off of the waters of Tonle Sap, the few tourists there to disturb the experience, and the peaceful sounds of nature.
On Phnom Krom, the best spot to view the sunset is behind the temple ruins on the southwest corner. The following video captures the sunset from Phnom Krom very well.

I always there when I have my day off to see the sunset. It's a nice place to get away from crowdy city just to enjoy the nature, fresh air and spend my quality time alone.
I very recommend to go there even with the bike or tuk tuk.

-Dedicated To: Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma

????????Location:
Phnom Krom is located about 10km south of Siem Reap town along the Road 63 which leads to the Tonle Sap Lake. To see the temple at the top, you’ll have to walk up a long set of stairs to the top of the 140m mountain.
????????Getting There:
Phnom Krom is easily accessible as the road is very good. You might want to take a bicycle and take in the beautiful scenery along the way. You’ll see local villages and some really untouched parts of the Cambodian countryside. The whole area turns green in the rainy season and it’s a wonderful time of year to visit.
Along the way, there are also many local restaurants where you can stop and get some local food.
You can also arrange a tuk tuk or taxi to take you there and back. The prices won’t be too expensive as it’s not a long way from town.
When you reach the foot of the hill, there are some lovely small villages around. You can really get the feeling that you’re off the beaten track here. So take the time to have a look around and explore.
Phnom Krom is a hill which is located around 12km from Siem Reap. At the top of the hill is Prasat Phnom Krom which is a Hindu shrine built in the 9th century by King Yasovarman. The temple was dedicated to three Hindu gods, Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva.
The view from the top is stunning and you can see for miles around. You can climb the stairs to the top of the rocky mountain, explore the three shrines, and watch the sunset over the Tonle Sap Lake.
Few people take the time to visit Phnom Krom, but it’s really worth a visit if you have the time. You can see a stunning sunset and avoid the crowds watching the sun go down at Phnom Bakheng.
????????Tours:
If you’re looking to visit Phnom Krom, then you’ll need a temple pass. As it’s in the opposite direction as the main temples, you might want to visit it later in the afternoon. This is also the best time to visit as you can see the sunset.
You might want to visit Phnom Krom in conjunction with Chong Kneas floating village or stop by Wat Ahvea along the way.
It’s also nice to explore the surrounding countryside and visit one of the local restaurants. The whole area is particularly nice in the wet season.
???????? Why Visit Phnom Krom?
You should visit Phnom Krom to see the sunset over the Tonle Sap Lake. If you like climbing mountains (or rather walking up steps to the top of a tall hill), then this would be a great place to visit.
It’s also rarely visited by tourists and you can really feel that you’re off the beaten track, especially if you get out and into the surrounding countryside.
????????History:
Prasat Phnom Krom was built by King Yasovarman I in the late 9th century. The king built temples on each of the three hills which can be seen from the plain of Angkor – Phnom Krom, Phnom Bok and Phnom Bakheng. This particular temple is actually three separate shrines which were individually dedicated to the Hindu gods Shiva (southern tower), Brahma (central tower) and Vishnu (northern tower).
Little is known about this temple because the sandstone has severely weathered over the the centuries and can no longer been seen. The structures were subject to the strong winds coming from the Tonle Sap lake and this has eroded the relatively soft sandstone from which they were built.
No real restoration has been completed in the area other than making it safe for visitors.
????????Layout and Design:
Prasat Phnom Krom was built in a square shape with three towers built in a row along the north-south axis. The tops of each shrine has collapsed and any carvings have long since disappeared. The towers all have entrances facing to the east and west. The other two sides have fake doors. There is evidence here that the shrines were originally very ornate with carvings and inscriptions.
The terrace around the bases of the towers provides for a panoramic view of the plains and the Tonle Sap Lake.
There would have been a wall enclosing the towers and originally there were three long halls. Both of which are no longer there and only the bases can be seen. Moreover, there were also four small buildings. Two were made from brick and two from sandstone. It’s believed that these structures were used as crematoriums.
