Preah Khan, Angkor, Siem Reap - Cambodia 4K Travel Channel
In order to reach Preah Khan, the temple complex north of Angkor Thom, we take nearly the same route as the day before. Our moped-rickshaw drives past Angkor Wat, through the south gate of Angkor Thom and past the Bayon and the Terrace of the Elephants. After we have let the northern town gate and the 100 m wide moat behind us, we reach Preah Khan. The temple is hidden in the woods.
In the past Preah Khan was more than just a temple. It was both Buddhist monastery with shrines for 430 Hindu gods, Mahayana university with more than 1,000 teachers, as well as an agricultural economic management center. Before Angkor Thom had been built, Preah Khan was presumably the provisional capital of the Khmer empire. The temple formed the center of the city. The city with an area of 750 x 900 m was protected by a moat. It almost had 100.000 inhabitants at the time. Under the reign of King Jayavarman VIII, in the mid-13th century, the complex was converted to a Hindu temple and many Buddha statues and reliefs destroyed.
The name Preah Khan (Holy Sword) is derived from the original Sanskrit name Nagara Jayasri, which means the holy city of victory. Jayavarman VII dedicated the temple in 1191 to his father, who drove out the invaders and defeated the arch-enemy, the Cham from present-day central Vietnam.
The central statue is named Jayavarmeshvara, which means Jayavarman, Lord of the world. It is consecrated to the father of Jayavarman, representing the incarnation of Avalokiteshvara, the universal Bodhisattva of compassion and caring. In a similar way Jayavarman VII had commemorated his mother with the construction of Ta Prohm.
We enter the complex by the west gate. Through the gate tower (Gapura) flanked by powerful Guardians we come to the actual temple. The temple is cross-shaped. A longitudinal passage which is interrupted only by different gates, allows us to see to the other end. In the center under a Prasat (tower) is a small stupa.
Openings in the walls are arranged in such a way that the rays of sun point directly to the top of the stupa. This gives the impression as if a flame burns at the top of the stupa.

Exploring Preah Khan at the Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia
After visiting Angkor Wat we headed over to Preah Khan to explore a less popular (but equally impressive temple) at the Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Immediately, we felt a sense of relief having escaped the enormous crowds at Angkor Wat. It was still early enough in the morning that we had nearly the entire temple to ourselves. Given that it is largely unrestored and has an eerie maze like quality, we enjoyed every moment of wandering around feeling somewhat like we were exploring more than just touring the complex. As our favorite temple, we recommend others to wake-up earlier than normal to come and explore before it becomes inundated with package tourists.

Preah Khan (Khmer: ប្រាសាទព្រះខ័ន), sometimes transliterated as Prah Khan, is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII. It is located northeast of Angkor Thom and just west of the Jayatataka baray, with which it was associated. It was the centre of a substantial organisation, with almost 100,000 officials and servants. The temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. Like the nearby Ta Prohm, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins.
Preah Khan was built on the site of Jayavarman VII's victory over the invading Chams in 1191. Unusually the modern name, meaning holy sword, is derived from the meaning of the original—Nagara Jayasri (holy city of victory).[1] The site may previously have been occupied by the royal palaces of Yasovarman II and Tribhuvanadityavarman.[2] The temple's foundation stela has provided considerable information about the history and administration of the site: the main image, of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in the form of the king's father, was dedicated in 1191 (the king's mother had earlier been commemorated in the same way at Ta Prohm). 430 other deities also had shrines on the site, each of which received an allotment of food, clothing, perfume and even mosquito nets;[3] the temple's wealth included gold, silver, gems, 112,300 pearls and a cow with gilded horns.[4] The institution combined the roles of city, temple and Buddhist university: there were 97,840 attendants and servants, including 1000 dancers[5] and 1000 teachers. The temple is still largely unrestored:

It's the last day of Khmer New Year 2017 in Siem Reap province in Cambodia which fall on 16th April. We had breakfast in Krong Siem Reap and travelled to Preah Khan temple. My son who's in Superman suite is walking with us into the ancient temple from the east gate. It's an amazing temple built in the 12th century by the Khmer King Jayavaraman 7th. The shape of Preah Khan temple is rectangle and the size is about 138 acres. This temple is surrounded by a strong wall carved stone garudas a symbol of protection from dragons and the power. It's a great and amazing ancient temple in Southeast Asia and it's great to visit this temple with Superman.

Preah Khan, Cambodia - the last stand of the Khmer Rouge
The jungle temple ruins of Preah Khan in Siem Reap, Cambodia, were the site of the final stand of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge. They were gradually fought back into the jungle until they finally surrendered here. There is a Khmer Rouge bunker in the grounds of Preah Khan.

Preah Khan temple was a surprise temple for us, it is a maze of doorways that go on for ages and in pretty much it's original state. To visit this amazing place you need to head north out of the gates, it is not far from the famous Ta Prohm Temple.
Bayon Temple Angkor is smack bang in the middle of Angkor Thom, roads lead to it directly from the gates.
The Bayon temple has a very impressive architecture that all tell a story of Cambodia's past.
Bayon is famous for its over 200 faces that have been built by hand in the 12th century. You will be blown away by these structures so make sure you get a 3-day pass to explore many of the Angkor Wat temples.
This experience is not to be missed and trust me Angkor Wat temples are the best in the world by a long shot!
Hope you enjoy the video.

Siem Reap, Cambodia - Preah Khan
Preah Khan is one of the most intruiging temples in Siem Reap. It is built as a symmetrical structure with corridors running down its centre to arrive at a stupa right in the centre. The temple has fallen into ruin, which adds to its charm, and is a must see for any visitor to Siem Reap.

Prasat Preah Khan Part 1
This is another interpretation of what Prasat Preah Khan was used for at that time. You will see another interpretation of some carvings there, related to Reamker. For information, other reference to the Reamker was shown in our videos in Angkor Wat, where Preah Neang Seda was burn alive...
Some of you might believe that Reamker, known around the world as Ramayana, originates from India. Well, I invite all of you to examine our Reamker and compare it with Ramayana, verse by verse. You would come to the same result as Keng Van Sak that our Reamker is completely different from the Ramanaya in very important points: for us the final hero comes out to be Preah Kao Neak Komono; whereas for Indians turns out to be Preah Somonok Odom. You would see that our Reamker story continues on and on; where the Ramayana stops to an end. Other very important findings were in the morality given, where killing others in their back was judged as dishonorable in our version, whereas, in the Indian version, Sdach Rama justifies that he has all authorities of life and death over everyone and can shoot in other's back.
We are lucky that despite the pressure received for us to align to the Indian Ramayana, our ancestors kept the story authentic. I leave it to you to consider which version is the right one...
As informed in earlier videos, I would like to thank all of you for supporting us! This video was recorded early December 2018.
It is unfortunate that some people don't understand that history is made up by mankind, especially when referring to ancient times, as there is an obvious lack of tangible proofs (i.e. documents which could have been destroyed with the fall of the Empire). Therefore, this interpretation, made by Chao Kaing, of the Khmer history is only another potential interpretation of the carvings left by our ancestors. Unlike other specialists, we aren't trying to make our ancient history fit into other's shoes/boxes (i.e. Indian history)...
We want to keep our channel and communication exchange as respectful as possible and don't force anybody to adhere to this interpretation. We won't tolerate any personal attack or insult on this channel.
Thank you for understanding.
