WHY PLAY AND SELF-DIRECTED EDUCATION ARE CRUCIAL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR AN EVER-CHANGING FUTURE
Peter Gray, Boston College
WHY PLAY AND SELF-DIRECTED EDUCATION ARE CRUCIAL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR AN EVER-CHANGING FUTURE 27 Sept., Luxembourg
.
A. What Is Self-Directed Education?
Education is the sum of everything a person learns that enables the person to live a satisfying and meaningful life. Most of education for everyone occurs naturally and efficiently outside of formal schooling, through self-directed play, observation, exploration, conversation, and collaboration.
Children come into the world biologically designed to educate themselves. Their curiosity, playfulness, sociability, and willfulness are all shaped by natural selection to serve the function of education.
If we look back far enough, Self-Directed Education is traditional education. Coercive schooling is an historical blip that served societal purposes that are now counterproductive.
B. The Educative Instincts
1. Curiosity—the drive to understand.
2. Playfulness—the drive to practice and create.
3. Sociability—the drive to know what others know and share what you know.
4. Willfulness—the drive to be in charge of one’s own life.
5. Planfulness—the drive to make plans for the future.
C. The Crucial Roles of Play
Definition of play: Play is activity that is (a) self-chosen and self-directed; (b) intrinsically motivated; (c) structured by mental concepts or rules; and (d) imaginative and creative.
How play promotes physical, intellectual, social/moral, and emotional development.
How play leads to passionate interests and careers.
D. Evidence that Self-Directed Education Works
Evidence from observations of hunter-gatherer cultures and other traditional cultures.
My study of the graduates of the Sudbury Valley School.
My study of grown unschoolers.
E. The Optimal Context for Self-Directed Education
Conditions present in hunter-gatherer bands and SVS, but absent in conventional schools.
1. The social expectation (and reality) that education is children’s responsibility.
2. Unlimited freedom to play, explore, and pursue own interests.
3. Opportunity to play with the tools of the culture.
4. Access to a variety of caring adults, who are helpers, not judges.
5. Free age mixing among children and adolescents.
6. Immersion in a stable, moral, caring community.
F. Why the Time is Ripe Now for Self-Directed Education to Take Wings
1. Increased toxicity of coercive schooling.
2. Increased evidence that SDE works.
3. Increased ease of pursuing SDE, as information has become readily available.
4. Fit of SDE with the modern economy. More than ever the economy needs people who have the kinds of traits and skills that are fostered by SDE and suppressed by coercive schooling.
H. Practical Steps Toward Making SDE Available for All: The Mission of ASDE
How social change occurs; reaching the tipping point.
Means of hastening movement toward the tipping point. Normalizing SDE.
Why the change will not occur through reform of current public schools.
Libraries as publicly supported centers for SDE. Our efforts to promote this movement.

Most Dangerous Ways To School | KENYA | Free Documentary
For centuries now, the Dorn Savanna has been the lifeline for the Massai people. Until today, they refuse to get involved in the constant upheavals in Kenya and instead continue to cultivate their traditions. The Massai have lived in the border region between Tanzania and Kenya for hundreds of years; almost completely removed from all civilization. In some ways their remoteness has spared them from many ordeals. But on the other hand, this autarkical life can be problematic, especially when it comes to the education of their children.
This is also the case in the Massai village Kasiole. 12 families live in the village. Each hut has two rooms and in each one there lives a family with at least 5 children. Here, there is no space for a school, and needless to say, there are also no teachers. Therefore the children from Kasiole must walk for hours each morning to get to school. Most of the children stay at home and tend the cattle. Many parents are afraid to send their children off on the 10 kilometers long way to school right trough the savanna.
4am. Before going off to school the nightwatch is the task in hand. 8 year old Moseka guards the family`s cows and goats. Sometime wild animals sneak into the village at night – a threat to everyone.
When dawn sets in at around 6, the Maasai village Kasiole comes to life. Moseka`´s nightwatch ends – and his way to school begins.
Students like Moseka from all across the region are setting off this morning on their way to the only school far and wide. Moseka`´s mother worries. In the last few days elefants often visited the area – the Massai consider them to be one of the most dangerous species in wilderness. His mother warns him once again about the possible dangers along the way.
The first kilometres take the children through the burning hot savanna, and this without any water. The family does not have the means to afford a drinking bottle. Their route takes them pass amazing landscapes, and also different Massai villages, some of them already deserted and some just newly built. Through their way of life, it makes no sense for the Massai to build large houses. They will only live 2 to 3 years in them and are built traditionally with walls made from cow manure and straw covered roofs. Only a few children join them from the other villiages, although in Kenya schooling is mandatory, but not enforced by anyone.
The way to school lead Moseka and his friend through the leopards valley – infamous for roaming predators. The Kenyan savanna is a huge open air zoo with an incredible diversity of species. Seen from the perspective of parents who send their children to school every day, it is an unfenced zoo, though. An open space whre the natural law of eat or be eaten is part of every day life. It takes a bit of courage to go to school here.
The students destination: The Ntuka Primary School. The only school within a radius of about 20 kilometers. Often they are too late, but the teacher understands, he is aware of the long school route.

2017 Personality 04/05: Heroic and Shamanic Initiations
In this lecture, 04 and 05 combined, I discuss the relationship between the initiatory structure characteristic of shamanism and the process of radical personality transformation, self- or therapy-induced. The basic structure is order/paradise, chaos/the fall, re-establishment of order/paradise. Since all paradises fall, however, the true paradise is identification with the process of transformation itself.

Flynn to plead guilty to lying to FBI: Live coverage on CBSN
Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will plead guilty to one count of making false statements to the FBI. He'll appear at a federal courthouse in Washington Friday morning before U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras for a plea hearing.
A document filed with the court by the special counsel says that Flynn did willfully and knowingly make materially false, fictictious and fraudulent statements and representations to the FBI regarding his interaction with then-Russian Envoy Sergey Kislyak. In early December, after the election, he and the president's son-in-law and top adviser Jared Kushner met with Kislyak at Trump Tower. On Dec. 29, Flynn called Kislyak five times, and the two spoke about sanctions against Russia that had just been imposed by President Obama over Russia's meddling in the U.S. 2016 elections.

Victim of rape by deputy in LA Jails
Frank Mendoza: I remember being arrested for being publicly drunk and being terrified because I was in jail and I had to let them know that I was gay and different. One of the officers made a threat against me and said that he was going to come get me later on. And I remember telling his supervisor the threat this officer just made on me. He said Mr. Mendoza, you are in LA County Jail. You are in one of the safest facilities around. You have nothing to fear.
Everybody's pod was shut except my pod. And I remember it seemed eerily quiet, and then as I'm looking around I see all the guards dispersing, just leaving. And my pod is still open and i'm wondering what's going on and from of the corner of my eye i see the gentleman, the officer that threatened me earlier, coming towards my cage -- coming towards me. and I just frantically started, I started screaming and yelling, to no avail -- nobody came to my rescue. and he just came in there and manhandled me and stripped me butt naked and sexually assaulted me.
He left me naked, bloodied, and terrified. I remember just being left in the corner, shivering. And when there was a guard change the guard came and he noticed there was something wrong with me. And he even knew my name and he was like Mendoza, what happened to you? The moment I told him, he suddenly changed his demeanor and said, Well, it doesn't look like anything happened to you. You look okay.
There was no forensic evidence taken, no -- it was not treated as a crime at all.
