Jerome-Perkinsville Road, Prescott National Forest, Arizona
See the Details at:
Between the historic mining town of Jerome and the ranches of Perkinsville, Arizona is a road that was once partially a route for a railway to carry copper and other precious metals and minerals from the Jerome mine. Today this road - also known as Forest Road 318 or Yavapai County Road 72 - is maintained as a county road. You'll want to spend some time in Jerome exploring this historic town, but then you can head northwest towards the sparsely populated ranching town of Perkinsville. From Perkinsville you can also head north to William, or west to Chino.
Along the route you can get amazing views of the Mogollon Rim, the striking reds of Red Rock Country, and the rolling desert hills just east of Chino Valley. You also get to drive along side the Woodchute Mountain Wilderness Area on the southern portion of this trail.

Live+Work+Play in Prescott (voice over by Toni Tennille)
Prescott is a destination that transcends the Arizona archetype. No sweltering summers or miles of cactus covered moonscape. The town's mile-high location in the Grand Canyon State's central highlands brings four mild seasons, an average annual daytime temperature of about seventy degrees, and over 300 days of sunshine. Just ninety miles north of bustling metro Phoenix, downtown Prescott is an idyllic hamlet nestled comfortably within a verdant national forest. Everybody's Hometown has a mix of unbeatable weather, outdoor adventure opportunities, natural beauty, and strong cultural heritage roots drawing increasing numbers of domestic and international travelers. Prescott! A great place to live, work, and play.

Mine Hunting Copper Creek #1, Prescott National Forest, AZ
#MineExploration of some old mining claims near Copper Creek, above the Hassayampa River, in Yavapai County, Arizona's Prescott National Forest. Includes a friendly encounter with an Arizona Black Rattlesnake (crotalus oreganus cerberus). Other than the Climax Mine ( ), all the shafts and adits I previously found were impenetrable. This complex was extensive -- according to the 1916 mining data book, over 4000 feet of workings -- but our exploration was cut short due to lack of illumination. ;-) We shall return! p.s. If you can identify the smelter, please reply below ...

Granite Mountain Hot Shots Juniper Tree Hike Prescott Arizona Memorial
While staying in Prescott, Arizona we rented the movie Only The Brave. After watching this excellent show we went in search of the new memorial park and the juniper tree.
The hike, we were to learn, to the tree, is a pretty walk through the high desert landscape. Towards the end it is littered with granite boulders in plain view of a rock climbing area I used to frequent called Granite Mountain.
The Juniper Tree is huge and very old. Its age is supposed to be in the realm of 1000 to 2000 years. Many have come here to pay their respects to the Granite Mountain Hot Shots that saved this tree.
It is helpful to see the movie before doing the walk so that you can feel the gravity of this site.
If you only have a car without high clearance the hike will be about 5 miles round trip. If you have an SUV, pick-up truck or something with a little more clearance you can drive nearly all the way to the trailhead which makes the trek about 3 miles round trip. To get to the second parking is not all that bad. If it is dry it is not a worry. If it is wet it could be a problem.
The trail is easy and well defined. It climbs gradually in the beginning but it is not steep.

Exploring Copper Creek Mine #2, Prescott National Forest, AZ
Two months ago we found an adit near Copper Creek, a tributary of the Hassayampa River, in the Prescott National Forest. However, lacking a flashlight ( ), we could not really explore it. Last week, we went back with a Black Diamond head lamp and a mini-Maglite for a proper #MineExploration. WOW!!! The mineralization inside the mine was stunning. We also found two additional adits, one of which resembled a little Animas River. (Complete with polluted sludge.) The mine primarily produced silver and gold, with copper, lead and zinc byproduct.

Bean Peaks, Prescott National Forest, Arizona Hike
Loop hike from the White Spar Campground, just south of Prescott, up a pleasant little canyon to the west flank of the Bean Peaks -- actually two small hills -- traversing the crest of the ridge, checking out some old mines, down to Upper Goldwater Lake. Got on Trail #396 to Lower Goldwater Lake, then cut down a very lush small canyon, with a small trickle of water, re-joining Trail #396 at its intersection with Trail #81, thence back to the campground. Spotted a memorial for the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Lots of mountain bikes on Goldwater Lake Trail #396.

Lynx Lake
Ranch Trail #62, Prescott National Forest, Arizona Hike
Hike on Ranch Trail #62 from Walker Road, to Upper Goldwater Lake on the Senator Highway, just south of Prescott, AZ. First part of hike was a short climb through a shrubby, old, burn area; the second through shaded pine forest with a surprising variety of flowers for so late in the season (especially at 6000+ feet altitude).
Btw, if you are wondering what that small, peach-like, berry is, it is an Oak Apple Gall Wasp ( ).
