Bainbridge Island was formed during the last ice age—13,000 to 15,000 years ago—when the 3,000-foot-thick (910 m) Vashon Glacier scraped out the Puget Sound and Hood Canal basins.
Bainbridge Island is located within the cool Puget Sound Basin, east of the Kitsap Peninsula, directly east of the Manette Peninsula and west of the City of Seattle. The island is approximately five miles (8 km) wide and ten miles (16 km) long, encompassing nearly 17,778 acres (71.95 km2), and is one of the larger islands in Puget Sound.
Bainbridge Island shorelines border the main body of Puget Sound, a large protected embayment, Port Orchard Bay, and two high-current tidal passages, Rich Passage and Agate Pass. The island is characterized by an irregular coastline of approximately 53 miles (85 km), with numerous bays and inlets and a significant diversity of other coastal land forms, including spits, bluffs, dunes, lagoons, cuspate forelands, tombolos, tide flats, streams and tidal deltas, islands, and rocky outcrops. The high point is 425-foot (130 m) Toe Jam Hill.
On the Kitsap Peninsula, Bremerton and Poulsbo lie across the Port Orchard channel to the west, and the city of Port Orchard lies across Rich Passage to the south.
The island is quite hilly and is known for its popular Chilly Hilly bicycle ride every February. This ride has been the unofficial start to the bicycling season in the Pacific Northwest since 1975.
Bainbridge Island is connected to the Kitsap Peninsula by the Agate Pass Bridge carrying SR 305 over Agate Passage. The only other public way off the island is by Washington State Ferries service from Winslow in Eagle Harbor to Colman Dock (Pier 52) in Seattle.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.02 square miles (168.40 km2), of which, 27.61 square miles (71.51 km2) is land and 37.41 square miles (96.89 km2) is water. The former creosote treating facility on Bainbridge Island in Washington State requires a coordinated effort to address contamination on the land and in the water. Three remedies are being used, groundwater treatment, a seawall to prevent chemicals from reaching Puget Sound, and a protective cap on the sea floor. Site investigation from the EPA Scientific Diving Team monitors how the sea floor is recovering. State, local and community partners are critical to the success of the cleanup efforts.

Pickleball a fast growing sport
Fenton — The air is peppered with laughter, shouted game play strategy and the bright “thud” of the pickleball striking the floor and paddle during an intense volley.
On Thursday, March 22, the Fenton Community and Cultural Center’s main meeting room upstairs became a court for a popular yet less mainstream sport — pickleball.
Though anyone can play, this group all happened to be over 55, mostly retired. Several were involved in public schools. Karen Morgan, a substitute teacher said it’s her main form of exercise. “This is such a fun sport,” she said. “It’s a great sport to play with people you enjoy being with.”
Pickleball is played in all 50 states. It’s been around for 50 years, yet it can fly under the radar of locals seeking a way to stay active at any age.
Now, Southern Lakes Parks and Recreation offers it on occasion in the Fenton Community and Cultural Center with $4 drop-in games.
The game is played on a court the size of a badminton court, or half the size of a tennis court. The game is usually played by teams of two. They play up to 11 points, following the basic rules of badminton, after the serve.
“It’s like a cross between tennis and ping-pong,” said Robert Baier, 59, of Argentine Township. He has played for six years. He’s connected to a group of community members who play, and keep up on available games. Aside from these sporadic local opportunities, he usually plays at the Genesys Athletic Club or the Cage Fieldhouse in Swartz Creek on weekends.
“It can be pretty aggressive, when you play a really aggressive player,” Baier said. “Like any other competitive sport, when you play against someone good, you play harder.” He said that players are rated on a number scale up to level 5. A higher level means more aggressive play and strategy.
The game originated in Washington, on Bainbridge Island. There are a couple accounts of how the game got its name, but the most popular story is that when the game was being played, one of the family’s dogs, named “Pickles,” would grab the ball and run off with it.
The actual ball is like a thicker, smaller wiffleball that can be smacked with a lot of energy without going very far. The paddles are larger than ping-pong paddles.
While the game holds its popularity with seniors, some high schools have introduced it as part of physical education, according to the USA Pickleball Association.
