This Place Matters Prince Albert Downtown
Kistahpinanihk – the meeting place for at least ten thousand years.
As its oldest city (first established in 1866) - Prince Albert is the true heart of Saskatchewan. On these very banks of the great North Saskatchewan River, people have been trading and engaging in dialogue for over 240 years. Since its founding- Prince Albert has been the Gateway to the North, and served as the capital of the District of Saskatchewan in what was then Northwest Territories.
Three of Canada’s Prime Ministers- Sir Wilfrid Laurier, William Lyon Mackenzie King and the champion of our Canadian Bill of Rights- John George Diefenbaker walked these very streets, discussed ideas and shopped at businesses like Ted Matheson Menswear ’s- established in 1929!
Prince Albert Downtown has changed a lot over the last 150 years. Many of the historic buildings have been renovated and now boast some of the finest dining establishments in Saskatchewan including the award-winning Rock Trout Café, Bison Café and Rusty Owl. Cultural diversity is reflected by the number of businesses started by many new arrivals to Canada who have all chosen to call Prince Albert home.
A broad range of retailers offer Customers a selection of the finest merchandise from all over the world- including specialized retailers dedicated to providing new food experiences from the Philippines, Ukraine, Malaysia, South Africa and the best selection of home-grown, home-made produce at the Prince Albert Farmers’ Market. The annual Prince Albert Street Fair is one of the largest annual events in Saskatchewan, and a highlight for many of the 300+ businesses that comprise this thriving Community.
With live music, regular wine and whiskey tastings, museums, conferences, conventions, art exhibitions and cultural events- Prince Albert Downtown is sitting pretty, and has reclaimed its position as a great meeting place.
Prince Albert Downtown is the ONLY Community in Saskatchewan in this year's #ThisPlaceMatters Competition. Our fundraiser is for wayfinders and signage along our main roads into Prince Albert, Saskatchewan that will draw more visitors to Prince Albert Downtown.

PAT Patrol Presents: Prince Albert Exhibition Association in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
PAT Patrol Presents: Prince Albert Exhibition Association in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
The Prince Albert Exhibition has a lot of history within the Prince Albert City limits; in fact, they started the board-of-trade which lead to the city being established. This year marks their 131st exhibition, so over a century this legacy has been shared with Prince Albert and area’s residence. PAEX’s motto is “Where Town and Country Meet” which is exactly what the exhibition grounds are, a home for both urban and rural folk alike to gather for the mutual enjoyment of events and experiences. The grounds play host to a wide array of events, things such as the Midway, Trade Shows, PolkaFest, the Circus, Monster Trucks, Chuck Wagon Races, and much more. The exhibition grounds are Prince Albert’s largest multipurpose facility featuring:
• the Dave G. Steuart Arena - home to hockey and lacrosse
• Exhibition Halls - home to Trade Shows, concerts, and PolkaFest
• Armouries – Home to Canadian Forces Primary Reserve Infantry
• Race Track – Home of the Spring & Fall chuck wagon races, monster trucks and more
• Grand Stand – Allows adequate viewing of events such as races, monster trucks, and the circus
• Livestock Ring and Show Ring – Home of the cattle shows and barrel races etc.
• RV Park – Prince Albert’s full service RV park for all your camping need
The multipurpose facility on a massive plot of land in the heart of Prince Albert makes it an appealing venue for all sorts of adventures; make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to take your own adventure this summer.
History
Prince Albert Exhibition Association was derived from the areas need for organization and leadership. They established a municipal council, which preceded the Board-of-Trade, to serve the area which was then known as Lorne District. Known as the Lorne Agricultural & Industrial Society at its inception in 1883, the Association was incorporated under the name Lorne Agricultural Society in 1887. In 1905, the same year as Saskatchewan became a province, it became the Prince Albert Agricultural Society. In 1971, a final name change was implemented to the present Prince Albert Exhibition Association. The Association remains the oldest continuing Agricultural Society in Saskatchewan. In 2008 the association celebrated their 125th anniversary. This year, 2014, marks their 131st anniversary, the organization continues to move forward for the betterment of the citizens of the area, to ensure that its motto, Where Town and Country Meet, remains an accurate reflection of its purpose and activities. On The Move - Prince Albert
On May 7, 2014, the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's On The Move campaign brought its giant floor map of the Canadian boreal forest to The Forest Centre at Prince Albert's Innovation Place. Forestry experts were on hand throughout the day to talk about the importance of Canada's boreal forest.
ABOUT THE CBFA
Canada's boreal forest is one of the largest and most ecologically significant ecosystems on the planet and the source of supply for one of Canada's most significant natural resource sectors.
Recognizing this, forest companies and environmental organizations in Canada came together to create the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement.
This global precedent integrates economic and environmental values to ensure a sustainable future for our boreal forest, our natural habitat, our forestry industry and all those whose livelihoods rely upon it.
The following are signatories to the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement:
Environmental Organizations (ENGOs):
Canadian Boreal Initiative, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), David Suzuki Foundation, ForestEthics, The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts and Ivey Foundation.
