[Wikipedia] Clan House, Galle
Clan House is a two-storey white stone building, located at 24 Church Street, Galle.
Clan House was constructed by John Black and Company, a British mercantile firm, who established themselves in Galle Fort in 1847. The company acted as the coal and shipping agency for the Clan Line shipping company. John Black (1819-1869), a Scotsman, was appointed as the first American Commercial Agent (Consul) in Ceylon in September 1850 and later became a member of the Galle Municipal Council. Following Black's death in February 1869 the company continued to operate under the management of his widow, Isabel, until her death in 1905.The company of Clark Spence and Company was established on 1 September 1868 after the signing of a formal partnership agreement between Thomas Clark and Patrick Gordon Spence—Scottish merchants and shipping agents in Galle. In 1873 Clark Spence & Co. became the sole agent of Lloyd’s of London in Ceylon and in 1876 the company was renamed Aitken Spence PLC. In 1929 the building was purchased by Clark Spence and Company, with Clan House becoming the Head Shipping Office of Clark Spence and Company.
The building also housed the shipping agencies for the following companies:
Asiatic Steam Navigation Company Ltd
East Asiatic Company Ltd (Copenhagen)
Royal Dutch Mail Lines
Ellerman and Bucknall Lines LtdAs well as the offices of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and the Inland Revenue Department. In 1999 the Galle office of Aitken Spence Shipping was permanently closed and the operations consolidated at the company's Colombo headquarters. The building is currently owned by Clark Spence and Company, a subsidiary of Aitken Spence and Co.
In June 2014, Aitken Spence revealed plans to convert the building and land to a 20-room boutique hotel, at an estimated cost of Rs 600M. In 2013/14, we made a concerted decision to strive and revive a property that has a lot of meaning not only to the Aitken Spence Hotel Group but also to our holding company Aitken Spence PLC with the planned renovation of the original Shipping Head Office of Clark Spence Company building to a new heritage hotel within the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Galle Fort.

Visit of a reasonably priced vintage style Hotel Victory downtown Kandy about 400meters from the tooth temple. Easy to get a basic room for arround 10 usd. Good enough to be a base for your walk arround excursions of the famous Kandy landmarks in that area. Friendly staff.
About Kandy: Kandy (Sinhala: මහ නුවර maha nuvara, pronounced [mahaˈnuʋərə]; Tamil: கண்டி kaṇṭi, pronounced [ˈkaɳɖi]) is the English name for the city of Maha Nuvara (Senkadagalapura) in the centre of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka.[1] The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world.
The name Kandy is derived from the Sinhalese kaⁿda uḍa pas raṭa. The Portuguese shortened this to Candea, using the name for both the kingdom and its capital Senkadagalapura. In Sinhala, Kandy is called Maha Nuvara, meaning Great City or Capital, although this is most often shortened to Nuvara.Historical records suggest that Kandy was first established by the King Wickramabahu (1357--1374 CE) near the Watapuluwa area, north of the present city, and named Senkadagalapura at the time, although some scholars suggest the name Katubulu Nuwara may also have been used. The origin of the more popular name for the city, Senkadagala, could have been from a number of sources. These include naming after a brahmin named Senkanda who lived in a cave near the city, after a queen of King Wickramabahu named Senkanda or after a colored stone named Senkadagala. In 1592 Kandy became the capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom in the island after the coastal regions had been conquered by the Portuguese. Several invasions by the Portuguese and the Dutch (16th, 17th and 18th century) and later by the British (most notably in 1803) were repelled. The kingdom tolerated a Dutch presence on the coast of Sri Lanka, although attacks were occasionally launched. The most ambitious offensive was undertaken in 1761, when King Kirti Sri Rajasinha attacked and overran most of the coast, leaving only the heavily fortified Negombo intact. When a Dutch retaliatory force returned to the island in 1763, Kirti Sri Rajasinha abandoned the coastline and withdrew into the interior. When the Dutch continued to the jungles the next year, they were constantly harassed by disease, heat, lack of provisions, and Kandyan sharpshooters, who hid in the jungle and inflicted heavy losses on the Dutch. The Dutch launched a better adapted force in January of 1765, replacing their troops' bayonets with machetes and using more practical uniforms and tactics suited to jungle warfare. The Dutch were initially successful in capturing the capital, which was deserted, and the Kandyans withdrew to the jungles once more, refusing to engage in open battle. However, the Dutch were again worn down by constant attrition. A peace treaty was signed in 1766. The Dutch remained in control of the coastal areas until 1796, when Great Britain took them over (while the Netherlands were under French control) as part of the Napoleonic wars. British possession of these areas was formalized with the treaty of Amiens in 1802. The next year the British also invaded Kandy in what became known as the First Kandyan War, but were repulsed. The last ruling dynasty of Kandy were the Nayaks. Kandy stayed independent until the early 19th century. In the Second Kandyan War, the British launched an invasion that met no resistance and reached the city on February 10, 1815. On March 2, 1815, a treaty known as the Kandyan Convention was signed between the British and the Radalas (Kandyan aristocrats). With this treaty, Kandy recognized the King of England as its King and became a British protectorate. The last king of the kingdom Sri Vikrama Rajasinha was captured and taken as a royal prisoner by the British to Vellore Fort in southern India along with all claimants to the throne. As the capital, Kandy had become home to the relic of the tooth of the Buddha which symbolizes a 4th-century tradition that used to be linked to the Sinhalese monarchy, since the protector of the relic was the ruler of the land. Thus the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Tooth were placed in close proximity to each other.World War II:In 1944, during World War II, the South East Asia Command of the allies was moved to Kandy, where it remained till the end of the war.(Wikiedia)

Archaeological Heritage and tourism in Sri Lanka
WAWULPANE LIMESTONE CAVE
The road to ‘Wawulpane limestone’ cave found on the Rathnapura – Embilipitiya
road, a little far from Pallebedda city. Through the road it’s only 15km to reach the cave. The archeologists express that this cave has 500 million years history. This is the one & only cave which we can see an internal waterfall in Sri Lanka. As well as this is the second largest limestone cave in Sri Lanka. When we reach the middle
of the cave we can see a fossil of a dinosaur or like animal.
The cave is surrounded by preserve forest and a brackish water stream flows
through it.
At the entrance of the cave there is a spectacular & natural creature which called
is ‘Yodhya kepu wala’. Also, we can see a fossil of a leaf and marbels.
This is one of most interesting place in Sri Lankan tourism industry.
MADUWANWALA WALAWWA
Maduwanwala Walawwa is one of the golden heritage in Sri Lankan culture,
which situated in the town of ‘Kalawana’ lies between ‘Embilipitiya and
Suriyakanda’ in Rathnapura district. This is one of the conspicuous persisting
residence in Sri Lanka.
The grandeur bears testimony to the man who made it his home, Maduwanwala
disawe popularly known as ‘Maha kalu sinhalaya’. It speaks volumes of a man’s
spirit, his heroism and how he used his unique mansion to display his resentment
and protest the colonial masters.
The walawwa had 82,000 acres of land surrounding it which is full of valuable
flora. Also, it has two grand rock archways, 121 rooms, 21 courtyards, 03
battlements. (defense walls) Court house, ponds, cereal garners and “Bo stupa”.
The combination of the all the accents that mentioned above reveals the
improvement of Sri Lankan architecture and depicts the format of ‘walawwa’.
Three dimersional picture of the ‘Black Prince’( Maduwanwala Disawe) still
stands in the walawwa with a huge wooden frame. Maduwanwala Walawwa has
many more attraction of local and foreign tourists. That can recognized as
nation’s heritage.
RAMBA TEMPLE
The Ramba Temple is far 22km from Rathnapura – Embilipitiya road and
covering from north by the river Walawe cover the southern & western part.
At the end of 10th BC century the ‘Magam Ruhuna Kingdom’ developed as the
collapse of the Anuradhapura Kingdom because of the attacks by Southern
Indians. There were two sections of this kingdom named as ‘Atadahasrata and
Dolosdahasrata’.
This temple complex covered over 300 acres and there are 25 building complexes
such as huge halls & houses of statues. There is a beautiful Dhageba which was
created by king ‘Mahanaga’ after the escape from Anuradhapura to south. The
Ramba name got because of the ‘Kotha’ IS made of gold. There are so many
historical structures like ‘Sandakada Pahana, Muragala, Korawakgala, Dhageba
and ponds. As well as Buddha statues, Aasana (made of stone), kehekili and clay
carves.

Sri Lanka is Chaotic Paradise with a Thrill Around Every Corner
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage enables tourists to get up-close and personal with the bathing mammals. Kandy boasts incredible natural beauty and the cultural history of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Capital, Colombo is a city on the move with an upcoming Financial District and the thriving Pettah Market. Sri Lanka encapsulates rich traditions, including spectacular food, while embracing economic progress. The majestic creatures - residents of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - are escorted to the Maha Oya River twice a day to relax and interact with each other and to be ogled at by tourists. The journey in some ways epitomised the carefree nature of the country - the vehicle had no seat belts and the driver would routinely overtake buses - a 1950's London Routemaster among them - and tuk-tuks and dogs along a country road winding its way through lush fields. The people of Sri Lanka are pleasant - proud of their rich heritage and of the rapid developments their country has made since the 26-year civil war ended in 2009 and peace prevailed. Money has been pumped into the island and as a result national roads have been built, colonial buildings restored and hotels erected to benefit tourism across the land. And with Sri Lanka receiving around 500,000 tourists in 2006, compared to more than 1.5 million in 2014, the investment appears to have paid off. What's more, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority estimates there will be more than 2.5 million visitors in 2016 to keep the steady progression of popularity moving in the right direction. The OZO brand is very much in tune with this new-look, progressive Sri Lanka in that it provides everything a modern traveller could need in the most simplistic and stress-free form possible. The rooms are a tranquil contrast to what can be an intense country and the hotel boasts a paperless check-in service, multi-region socket outlets and even a TV channel showing sheep jumping over fences - to help those struggling to sleep. Kandy is known for its staggering natural scenery - something that is accentuated by the lofty positioning of the hotel - and is within close proximity to tea plantations, the aforementioned Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. A visit to the latter will set you back 1,000 Sri Lankan rupees (£5, $7) - similar to the elephant orphanage, where tourists pay an admittance fee of 2,500 LKR (£12, $17) and locals pay 100 LKR (50p, 70 cents), there are very different prices depending on the nationality of the visitor. This aside, the history of the temple is absolutely fascinating with legend claiming that the tooth relic was retrieved from Gautama Buddha - the founder of Buddhism - after he died in 543 BCE. As expected the place is truly spiritual and guests are encouraged to bring an offering of a lotus flower - a prominent symbol of Buddha - as a sign of respect. Admittedly the vast crowds (which are to be expected) do take away from the humbling experience somewhat and rather surprisingly perhaps I found that the tourist-friendly segment - being pushed along in a busy queue to sneak a peek at the tooth relic - the least enjoyable part. A visit to a tea plantation is also worth doing; I popped into the Geragama Tea Factory, a short drive from the elephant orphanage, and was astounded by the amount of work that goes into creating the perfect cup of tea - from picking the leaf to withering, heating, rolling and finally drying it. Quite unlike Kandy in every single way the capital city runs at a faster pace with tuk-tuks and people and market stalls and dogs and traffic and more tuk-tuks everywhere you look. If you've heard anything about Sri Lankan cuisine then you have probably been told to expect curry morning, noon and night. In fact the latter - launched in 2011 by Sri Lankan cricketing legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara and chef Dharshan Munidasa - serves up the largest fresh crabs known to man and is one you simply cannot miss.
Upali's by Nawaloka, situated alongside the National Museum of Colombo, is an absolute must if you wish to experience the traditional flavours of the country - everything from Jackfruit to kneaded flat bread pieces tossed with vegetables or meat, known as Kottu Roti.
Like its counterpart in Kandy, OZO Colombo similarly understands its market and targets city workers, alongside tourists, by providing a business lunch buffet during the week. It also boasts meeting rooms with space for up to 120 people and will even host a wedding from the Aqua function space, which overlooks and provides spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. For such a small island there is much to do and see in Sri Lanka and with locals as happy to have you in their country as you will be within it, it is the holiday destination you will not forget in a hurry.
