Abandoned Places - Gravelly Graveyard Cemetery Princeton Ave Brick Township Ocean County New Jersey
GRAVELLEY GRAVEYARD AKA OLD WOOLLEY CEMETERY
Location: Fairview Avenue 1/4 mile south off Princeton Avenue
Earliest Burial: 01/01/1812
Latest Burial: 06/19/1901
Gravelley Graveyard, also known as the Old Woolley Cemetery, is the oldest burial ground within present day Brick Township. Located on a rise above the north bank of the Metedeconk River, it contains less than one hundred graves. Enoch Jones purchased about eight acres of land from the estate of Adam Woolley. Enoch in turn, deeded the land to Jessie Jones, setting aside less than one-half acre for a public cemetery. Among this buried there are Enoch Jones, who served with George Washington in the American Revolutionary War and who helped defend Toms River during a battle with British forces; Issac Elmer, a Township Overseer and veteran of the War of 1812, and William S. Johnson, a member of the first township committee in 1850
This graveyard measures 100x100 and is on a plot overlooking the Metedeconk River and has graves dating from the late 1700s to 1901. There are less than 100 graves here, but amongst them are: Enoch Jones, who served with George Washington in the American Revolutionary War and who helped defend Toms River during a battle with British forces; Issac Elmer, a Township Overseer and veteran of the War of 1812; and one of the first township committee members in 1850, William S. Johnson.
The site is fenced off with a white picket fence, and there is an orientation plate outlining the names and plots in the cemetery. The site is peaceful, on a dead end on Fairview Ave, off busy Princeton Avenue, and has a beautiful overlook of the shallows of the Metedeconk River.
