The Bula Loop - Live Performance Promo
'The Bula Loop' was originally devised with College drama pupils in March 2014. This show tells the darkly comic story of 24 hours in the life of one family living with autism. The production previewed at the Printers Playhouse before opening at the Brighton Fringe in May 2016 and then going out on tour - first stop Hastings OB Studio. The play was created from an original concept by Tom Page and devised with pupils Albert Harvey Hendley, Luke Howard, Phoebe Hughes, Venetia Inchbald, Tom Page, Marianne Smith, Bethany Stephens and staff Linda Salway and Fen Marriott. It was subsequently developed by Tom Page with further acting contributions from pro performers Deborah Clair, Nicholas Collett and College pupils Megan Good, George Tomsett and Hermione Wohlrab. It is now to be performed by Deborah Clair, Grace Collett, John Knowles, George Tomsett and Tom Page.

Mr. Murgatroyd & Mr. Winterbottom (Handley & Frankau) - It's A Pity / Disarmamant (1932)
Tommy Handley and Ronald Frankau were an odd pairing for a double act, Handley was a family audience comic telling clean quick-fire gags whereas Ronald Frankau was one of the bluest comedians who often found himself banned by the BBC. His jokes about courted and the things people do were stronger and more obvious than Max Millers'.
The pair first peformed together as a double act in 1929 as the act 'North & South'. They released at least seven records together under this name for Parlophone whilst still releasing records individually under their own names too. Then in 1932 they released at least one record together as 'Mr Black & Mr Blew' for the Broadcast label, with no reference as to their real identities on the record, possibly because their names were under contract to Parlophone. Then in 1934 they got together again as Mr. Murgatroyd & Mr. Winterbottom for Parlophone, a slight tweaking of the North & South act under a new name. This double act was popular on BBC radio appearing together on may BBC variety shows as well as making at least thirteen records together from December 1934 until at least 1940, by which time Handley had ITMA running since 1939 which took up too much of his time for the act to continue. For a brief time Tommy Handley's wife Jean Allistone performed with Ronald Frankaua's actress wife Renee Roberts as Mrs. Murgatroyd and Mrs. Winterbottom as the wifes of these characters seperate to Handley & Frankau.
Thomas Reginald Tommy Handley (17 January 1892 -- 9 January 1949) was a British comedian, mainly known for the BBC radio programme ITMA (It's That Man Again). He was born at Toxteth Park, Liverpool in Lancashire.
He served with a kite balloon section of the Royal Naval Air Service during World War I and went on to work in variety, and in the infancy of radio became known as a regular broadcaster. He worked with people such as Arthur Askey and Bob Monkhouse, and wrote many radio scripts, but it is the BBC comedy series ITMA for which he is best known, and which itself became known for a number of catchphrases, some of which entered popular vocabulary. He later starred in the ITMA film in 1942 and in Time Flies in 1944.
In later years, he suffered with high blood pressure, the result of his driving commitment to ITMA, and died suddenly on 9 January 1949 from a brain hemorrhage, 8 days before his 57th birthday. He was cremated and interred at the Golders Green Crematorium. In a eulogy at his memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral, the Bishop of London, John W C Wand, said that he was one whose genius transmuted the copper of our common experience into the gold of exquisite foolery. His raillery was without cynicism, and his satire without malice...
Ronald Frankau (22 February 1894 - 11 September 1951) was an English comedian and musician from London who started in cabarets and made his way to radio and films.
Frankau worked as a chorus boy at Daly's Theatre in London in 1911 and joined the army in 1914 to fight in World War I. During that time he continued his music and comedy ambitions, organizing his own concerts in Africa and the United Kingdom.
After the war he worked in night clubs and hotel lounges as an entertainer with both comical song and dance. It was then that he met performer Monte Crick, who would end up being his pianist in all his later recordings.
In 1925 he started broadcasting saucy jokes on the radio in an Etonian tone for the BBC, but is actually better known these days for what he was never allowed to broadcast. Frankau recorded a number of songs and skits on Parlophone, some of which, like Winnie the Worm and Everyone's Got Sex Appeal For Someone, were banned altogether. Despite, or because of, this flavour in his songs, Frankau sold over 100,000 records in 1932.
Like most comedians, he often commented on the current events at the time, often in satire. Some of the songs he recorded regarding current events (the war, at that time) were ''Heil Hitler! Ja! Ja! Ja!'' and ''The Navy The Army and The Police''. Despite his dangerously naughty tones off the air, he was able to keep his jokes clean enough for some of the toughest censors of British broadcasting at the time, including Baron Reith.
In 1934 Frankau began a comedy duo with Tommy Handley that they called 'Murgatroyd and Winterbottom'. On 7 November 2006, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a review of one of his partnerships - Mr Murgatroyd and Mr Winterbottom - 'The story of Tommy Handley and Ronald Frankau, a comedy partnership which had its heyday in the 1930s world of radio. There was no straight man, so the partnership was a rare one. Tommy was a fast talking Liverpudlian, while Ronald in contrast was upper class and Eton-educated. Presented by Nicholas Frankau, actor and grandson of Ronald.'
Ronald Frankau died at Eastbourne on the Sussex coast .
The JPK Project
Welcome to The JPK Project
The JPK Project was formed in February 2001 as we discovered the need for Residential Accommodation in the East Sussex area for people with a learning disability.
Above is an artist's impression of the site we hope to create at Edgmond Evangelical Church, Old Town, Eastbourne.
Extensive research and through the Learning Disability Register for East Sussex showed at that time that there were at least 140 people aged between 25 and 50 still living at home and no suitable sheltered accommodation vacancies in the area or plans for the future, for when parents/carers become too old to care or died.
In addition it was felt essential that parents should have the opportunity to assist with this enormous transition into independent living before a crisis occurred.
We also believe that everyone needs a purpose to get up in the morning and lead a meaningful and useful life and therefore The JPK Project aims to provide practical training and work experience on site so that those resident and others, can live a worthwhile and fulfilling existence. We also believe that parents having cared all their lives deserve some modicum of retirement.
In August 2003 The JPK Project became a Registered Charity, which we believed to be important, to further our charitable aims and objectives and to gain support from the community at large.
We have a legally binding Trust Deed and 7 Trustees who are fully committed to realising The JPK Project at the earliest opportunity.
We are fortunate to have attracted the Patronage of Dame Jane Gow, who wholeheartedy supports our aims and objectives.
The Learning Disability Register for East Sussex shows that within the Eastbourne and South Wealden area there are:
* 40 people with a learning disability between the ages of 25 and 50 living at home with their parents (and a further 141 in the rest of East Sussex).
* 103 people with a learning disability without full time day care provision.
* Approximately 120 people with a learning disability will be leaving full-time education in the Eastbourne area in the next five years.
Inevitably data will have altered since our research, but it is certain that numbers will have increased rather than diminished and the need is even greater due to the inevitable aging of parents and carers.
Research also showed that people were leaving full time education without full time day activities, be that Further Education, Practical Training and Work Experience or Social Experiences.
Due to the financial constraints of East Sussex County Council, Adult Social Care have been slow to develop Supported Living for people with a severe learning disability.
In the absence of suitable state service provision, the JPK Project aims to provide supported living in a safe environment for people with learning disabilities, enabling them to live independently and with access to meaningful daytime activities, training, work experience and friends.

Incredible Shipping Container Home By The Sea Is A Small Space Marvel
After spending it’s life on the open ocean, this shipping container landed on the shores of New Zealand where it was transformed into a spectacular home for a dynamic young couple. After living in the container home for three years, a new addition to the family inspired a renovation project which saw the tiny house transform into a family home.
Support our show:
Kim and James have done an incredible job with the design and build of their container home. Completely council consented, they constructed their home from a 40ft shipping container which was chopped down to 30ft to be able to fit onto the section and fit in with local regulations. Around the container home, they have constructed a large deck and a wonderful outdoor living area.
Read more:
The home is positioned above two 20ft shipping containers, one which acts as storage space and one which functions as a base of operations for the couple’s company, a t-shirt design and printing business. Ultimately here, James and Kim have created a spectacular work / home balance thanks to some very clever small space design.
Kim is also an author who has recently published a children’s book about an architect deigning a tiny house. To find out more about that click here:
