TRAVEL SERIES ENGLAND: STOURHEAD HALL AND GARDENS, NATIONAL TRUST ENGLAND|TRAVELLER'S NEST NZ
Stourhead House and Gardens, Mere, Wiltshire, UK
Filmed on location on 17.06.2019
We just happened to drive past this magnificent National Trust property on the way to another property. Very quickly I said to Mark turn left now off the motorway, there is Stourhead House. We were on our way to Bath after spending a super weekend hiking in Devon with Stephen and Fran from Wandering Hedgehog.
Friends of ours from Perth had been here three years prior. I still remember reading their blog about it..I am so impressed, that I put it in the back of my mind to visit, if we ever made it to England.
I have actually not even editing this video, as it is such a beautiful property.
This video is for one of my best friend, Jane. Jane is a number one fan of Pride and Prejudice. Part of the film was filmed at this property.
Stourhead manor house and gardens is 40km south of Bath in Wiltshire.
It is set of 2,650 acres of woods and gardens.
When Stourhead first opened in 1740s. It was described as a 'living work of art'. The gardens are world famous with its centerpiece of a magnificent lake reflecting classical temples and mystical grottoes.
The Stourton family had lived at the Stourhead estate for 500 years until they sold it to Sir Thomas Meres in 1714.
The Meres family sold it in 1717 to Sir Richard Hoare, a wealthy banker. The current Palladian manor house was built between 1721 and 1725.
Over the next 200 years, the Hoare family lived here collecting Chippendale furniture and art. Sir Henry Hoare donated the estate to NT in 1946.
His son and only heir, Captain Henry Harry Hoare died of wounds received at the Battle of Mughar bridge on 13 November 1917 during WWI.
In the house we saw a Salt holder of Gold, apparently Salt was very expensive and a sign of wealth.
The furniture collection includes a Pope cabinet and Table cabinet with gemstones inlaid. A Regency library, which was one of the best in the NT collection.
The buildings and monuments are erected in remembrance of family and local history.
The number of temples are inspired by scenes of the Grand Tour of Europe. It was common practice to bring back paintings and art after a tour of Europe..I don't even buy souvenirs anymore..a bit different now these days.
The monuments are used to frame each other and to draw you into this stunning garden.
The sunken path in the grotto draws you in, and allows you to contemplate all the surrounding panorama.
You look over the lake towards the Palladian bridge and Temple of Flora from the Grotto.
As you walk into the 200 year old Grotto, you are overwhelmed by the darkness until you see the River God in front of you and the Sleeping nymph statue.
As you come out of the Grotto, you are greeted by the Gothic summer cottage and late the Temple of Apollo.
House and Gardens are Grade I listed historical property.
Highly recommended. We loved this place
COST: GBP 19.50 pp or free if a NT member.

Visiting Dyrham Park | National Trust
Maddie and I absolutely love the National Trust, and Dyrham Park was such a delight! The gardens were beautiful, and there were so many rooms open in the house, it was such a great day out. We were very lucky that the weather held out for the majority of the day, though we didn't see any deer, so I guess we'll be going again soon!

The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, usually known as the National Trust, is a conservation organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Trust does not operate in Scotland, where there is an independent National Trust for Scotland. The trust was founded in 1895 and given statutory powers, starting with the National Trust Act 1907. Historically the Trust tended to focus on English country houses, which still make up the largest part of its holdings, but it also protects historic landscapes such as in the Lake District, historic urban properties, and nature reserves.
According to its website:
We're a charity that works to preserve and protect historic places and spaces – for ever, for everyone.[1]
The trust owns many heritage properties, including historic houses and gardens, industrial monuments and social history sites. It is one of the largest landowners in the United Kingdom, owning many beauty spots, most of which are open to the public free of charge. It is the largest membership organisation in the United Kingdom, and one of the largest UK charities by both income and assets.
